Vietnam, U.S. Agree to Resume Flights.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) -- Vietnam and the United States reached a tentative agreement Wednesday to begin the first commercial flights between the two countries since the end of the Vietnam War, a Vietnamese official said.

The two sides were still working out final details, but were expected to initial an agreement on Thursday, said the official from Vietnam's Civil Aviation Administration, who declined to be named.

The agreement came after negotiations broke down three years ago before resuming this spring. It would open direct flights between the United States and Vietnam, but no details were available on when the service would begin.

American carriers currently must use code-sharing agreements with other airlines that operate in Vietnam, requiring passengers to change planes before entering the country.

The deal comes as Vietnam moves toward a market economy and works to promote tourism in a country of 80 million people that's dotted with bucolic rice fields, pristine beaches and rugged mountains.

Vietnam has said the American market accounts for 10 percent of its aviation business, and that number would likely increase with direct flights making travel quicker and more convenient for Americans.

More than 1 million overseas Vietnamese reside in the United States, many of whom fled Vietnam after the communists seized control of the country in 1975. Many of the former refugees have started traveling back to their homeland.

The U.S. delegation is led by Laura Faux-Gable, deputy director of the State Department's Office of Aviation Negotiations.

Intresting. The US and Nam are suppossedly no longer enemies, but, Vietnam still shows up on every list of geopolitical villains when Fort Hood does its security briefs. They also have been condemned at least twice in the last year by The so-called State Dept. It's hard to tell where the US gov ever stands on foreign relations.

Hundreds of flights already from the USA to Red China (Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, Canton) packed w/ American businessmen, student backpackers, and retirees on holiday, and they are a communist dictatorship; and we also have flights to Venezuela which is a socialist autocracy.

If we are consistent, we have to either cancel all those flights to communism or, go ahead with flights directly to Vietnam and even Cuba. Some times I don't get these double standards.

"The deal comes as Vietnam moves toward a market economy."
Watch out China! You pay your workers 35 cents an hour and Vietnam pays them 10 cents. Industrial production will soon be moving from China to Nam. And while were at it let's thanks Sen. McCain for opening up the trade route and betraying the sacrifices of his fellow soldiers.

"Double standards"....Naaaawwwwww.

Never. Like when Rummy says "the Iraqi oil is for the Iraqi people"......implying he's going to let Iraqi civilians keep oil profits?

But when Chavez in S.A. tries to nationalize the countries oil industry, he's a communist.

Double standard, never happen..

Wink, wink.
