Our item on retired and active military members being asked by USAA Magazine to rank their all-time favorite military movies (the most popular, in order, were "Twelve O'Clock High," The Bridge on the River Kwai," "The Longest Day," "Patton," "The Deer Hunter," "Saving Private Ryan" and "We Were Soldiers") generated considerable response from within the ranks.
"I saw that article ... and wondered how they came up with those movies. Then I saw the writer was a retired Air Force officer. Well, no wonder," writes retired Army officer Bob Thomas of Guthrie, Okla.
"Soldiers would choose a different set of favorite war movies, as would sailors and Marines. I can't believe no one mentioned 'Black Hawk Down,' 'Flight of the Intruder,' 'Gettysburg,' 'Memphis Belle,' or 'Full Metal Jacket.' "

One of the world's great beauties and Italy's best current export:
BAND OF BROTHERS is a must see...it'll have you riveted and at times misty-eyed and it was true...and those old guys lived it and saved our bacon. That fellow who started out as an NCO and ends up top dog is still alive....a real hombre..and smart.

Bravehart
Gods and Generals
Blackhawk Down
Shaka Zulu
Das Boot
Gone with the Wind
The Red Badge of Courage
The choice also depends on the age of the individual. One young guy recommended a Disney film MOSBY'S MARAUDERS.

I'd rather watch old Victory at Sea sequences and similar things taken from military film and newsreels during the 40s and 50s than most war movies. The scale of many of the major operations in WW-II were large enough to make filming more than a little of them nearly impossible. In other words, how are you going to film a group of B25s flying in a wedge formation which is several miles across?

Another great Brit movie worth the watch is "Culloden" made in 1964.
A really good movie if you can stand subtitles is the Polish film "Kanal" about the Warsaw uprising of 1944
Breaker Morant - Law of land warfare class film in Infantry Advanced Course 1982
I can't believe no one has mentioned "Zulu"

I read the whole thread and agree with pretty much everything that has been posted so far. I would like to add the BBC adaptations of the "Sharpe's" series that was on the History Channel a few years ago. Sean Bean played Richard Sharpe.

When I couldn't find an M16 like old Johns that I never had to reload I am laid up today after some minor surgery on my foot this morning so have been watching some old westerns on the Western Channel (we splurged and signed up for digital cable and that is the favorite of all the kids). I did not know there was such a thing as an eleven shooter, but I just saw Matt Dillon with one. It might even have been a twelve as he reholstered after dispatching three bad guys. Still love them old episodes and Gene Autry, and others.

Western movie thread friend.......... Sitting here hurt/lame myself after my back surgery few weeks ago. My favorite westerns list is too long. We had that thread a few months ago I believe. On my bookmarks I believe. All round good fun western was Silverado. Classics , High Noon and The Wild Bunch. I'm gonna go buy "the wind and the lion" this evening. Short of Charlie McCarthy's biggest dummy being in it I like the movie.

Most if not all of my favorites have already been listed, but I think Hamburger Hill comes as close to the raw emotion most of who've "been there" have experienced.
A very good, but rarely seen flick is
The Bridge.
"Near the end of World War II, a small German town braces for the onslaught of American troops. Eight schoolboys are conscripted into the army and their first order is to defend a bridge leading to their town."

Saving Private Ryan

Every time I watch The Dirty Dozen I somehow keep hoping that Jim Brown makes it. And grateful that Telly Savales as Maggot doesn't!

Read through the posts and didn't see a couple of my favorites listed, but i read pretty quickly -- for me at least.
Heartbreak Ridge. Big eastwood fan.
Top Gun. Good kick ass story and great songs -- Highway to the Danger Zone.
Casablanca although not strictly a war flick.
There is also a movie that's been played recently on cable recently about the Nazis. Based on fact, I believe, no actual war footage, a meeting where officers and officials of the Reich discuss the solution to the "Jewish Problem." Anybody know what's it's called? If you get a chance to see it, do. Absolutely incredible, you'll sit there with your mouth open, shaking your head.

One thing could be said about most military movies, they are usually pretty good except for that one made up liberal story about the vet in the chair.

"I like the Yugo movie with Dennis Quaid recently....at least it gave the Serbs a fair shake...Savior...not great but good. "I thought that was a good one too. Gruesome massacre scene near the end. Another good Yugo film is "No Mans Land". Wounded Serbian is boobytrapped laying on top of a bouncing betty. I didn't see anyone mention "Memphis Belle" yet either.
