Legalizing vital (illegal) workers (agJOBS Bill Alert)
Sac Bee ^ | 10/11/03 | Op/Ed

It is rare, almost unheard of in fact, for both the United Farm Workers Union and the California Farm Bureau to support the same major piece of immigration and labor legislation. But a new bipartisan bill in Congress has won the backing of the two longtime political foes. It offers an imperfect but pragmatic and politically practicable way to deal with one of the most difficult issues facing the country: the crush of illegal immigrants working in agriculture.

There is no such thing as a "vital" job that must be performed by a criminal class. Again, business gets special favors and the citizens of the US end up paying for the vaseline.

II is now all about $$$, spec interests, and pol power.

Another alarming development in our tyrannical government...

The common goal of I I advocates is to promote mass, stealth infiltration of illegals so that citizens are either unaware of it in casual observation (and thus not outraged enuf to hold pols responsible)

Once this is accomplished, there will be ZERO chance at responsibly and ethically dealing with the problem, and then they will justify immediate amnesty for all illegals.

It is insulting to citizens...pols well thought out faux indifference and their incrementalist steps to ultimately screw us over in a round about way. Let them come out for amnesty now and face the consequences of the Am public.

Even Bush ignores the prob, and is now spending days pandering to the Cuban vote in the midst of this massive I I problem.

I guess I'm a rarity - I'm a conservative Republican, and I farm for a living. I DON'T HIRE ILLEGALS....If you can't handle the land you've got with just your own family, then buy some more damn equipment, or change crops. It's that simple.

I'm a conservative too who has hired help. In my case to maintain a household/landscape and to care for aging, unfirm parents. I've never resorted to hiring illegals. Everyone of the contractors hired have been native born.

Some farming is not machinery friendly. What do you farm ?
Man prefers not to live by corn and wheat alone.

"The bill has limited application. It applies to farm workers only, not to the millions of illegal immigrants working in hotels, restaurants, construction and other low-paying jobs across the country. But it may provide a model for other industries as well. Imperfect as the bill may be, it is a start."

Be patient. You just have to take it one bill at a time.

BTW what happened to the politicians assuring that they only wanted to fix illegal immigration with temporary visas?
Now it's temp for a little while then right to PR status. Guess the hacks are starting to realize the American public is so apathetic they no longer have to pretend to represent us.

For any who might be interested in looking at the legislation it's house version is HR3142 senate S1645.

Of course in the interests of family unity the non-working spouse and children are also eligible for temp visas and to xfer to PR status along with the guest worker.

"Some farming is not machinery friendly."

Then we don't need it. We can import it or live without it.

Whatever it is isn't worth allowing millions of 3rd-world, Marxist/Socialist, illegal pests destroy our school systems, hospitals, social programs and vote in our elections.

Like domestically grown lettuce or strawberries are critical to our survival as a nation?

Get real, Staytrue.

Good post.

A few years ago, I started a vegetable garden in my backyard. I still have to buy food from the store but just think if more people did this the demand for illegally produced fruits and vegetables will drop thus making the USA less attractive for illegals.

I look at it this way. If we deport the illegals the price of strawberrys will go up due to the lack of labor available. The high price will either lower the demand OR wages will go up for LEGAL citizens to do this work thus attracting more workers. This is simple supply and demand. I'm willing to pay higher prices for strawberrys if we deport illegals. Things will probably even themselves out since we won't have to pay their medical bills and their upkeep in our prisons and schools.

A little garden is a great idea. When I lived in the midwest, the suburb I was in was taken over by the recycling Nazis. Lawn waste had to go into special bags, etc..

I bought a compost machine from the company that makes the Yaardvark. It was basically the size of a 55 gallon drum laid on its side on a frame that allows you to tumble the contents periodically with a hand crank.

I had the most incredible garden after that. I grew monstrous tomatos, zucchini, green peppers and corn. I was feeding all of my neighbors and that was after my Cocker Spaniels ate their fill, everyday.

I grew monstrous tomatos,

I seem to have good luck with tomatos. I put old coffe grounds from work and home in my garden. The worms love it and the tomatos taste 100% better than what you buy in the store.

I do this with no help from illegals. I guess I don't know what I'm missing.

Cesar Chavez is rollig in his grave. The UFW is betrying the ideals of its founder, who among other things, OPPOSED mass immigration. Mass immigration, both LEGAL AND ILLEGAL, hurts farmworkers.

offers an opportunity to give legal status to hundreds of thousands of farm workers who have entered the United States illegally.
