*BTW, I am one of two people I know who holds degrees from both Dallas and Westminster Seminaries. The other is currently an OPC pastor.

"The practical effect of this doctrine [Divine Sovereignty] has been to make strong Christians. The men who had come to believe that they were nothing, and God everything, and yet that God was working in them and through them, could do their work in the world, since God gave it to them to do, without fear of men or the devil. The Protestants of Geneva, the Hugenots of France, the Covenanters of Scotland, the Puritans of the English Civil War, and our own Pilgrim Fathers, got the iron in their blood from their Calvinism...it has been associated with an unusual manifestation of moral vision, enthusiasm, and strenuousness...abasing man before God, but exalting him again in the consciousness of a new-born liberty in Christ, teaching him his slavery through sin, yet restoring to him his freedom through grace, leading him to regard all things in the light of eternity, it contributed to form a grave, but very noble and elevated character, rearing a race not afraid to lift up the head before kings."

- WH Griffith Thomas, The Principles of Theology: An Introduction to the Thirty-nine Articles

NOTE: WH Griffith Thomas was scheduled to be the first professor of theology for Dallas Seminary. He died the year the school was opened.

Who was the actual guy who taught theology to teach at Dallas' first semester?

A Dallus alumnus told me that story yesterday, but I can't remember who the substitute was.

When WHGT died, Lewis Sperry Chafer took the theology courses (or so I am told).

BTW, I am the possessor of the hand written sermon note cards of WHGT. His daughter stored many of her father's things with us and gave the file box of sermon outlines to me. His penmanship was amazingly beautiful.

His daughter showed us a folder signed by WHGT's students in his Oxford Greek text Bible study. One of the signatures was T.E Lawrence (Lawerence of Arabia) who was not a believer but attended the study. Lawrence's brother, who was a believer, also signed the book.

Great, but we'll need a quote with your request...

***The thread also welcomes members of the GRPL to post favorite grace oriented historical quotes from those who have swarmed before us.

Application for inclusion in the GRPL should be accompanied by a suitable historical quote.***

I know I'm gonna be on this GRPL.

"If Christ on His cross intended to save every man, then He intended to save those who were lost before He died. If the doctrine be true, that He died for all men, then He died for some who were in Hell before He came into this world, for doubtless there were even then myriads there who had been cast away because of their sins. . . That seems to me a conception a thousand times more repulsive than any of those consequences which are said to be associated with the Calvinistic and Christian doctrine of special and particular redemption. To think that my Savior died for men who were or are in Hell, seems a supposition too horrible for me to entertain." (Charles H. Spurgeon; Autobiography: 1, The Early Years, p. 172)
