Archbishops want church expelled By Jonathan Petre and Jonathan Wynne-Jones (Filed: 05/06/2004)

Worldwide Anglicanism was back on the brink of schism yesterday after conservative Archbishops demanded the expulsion of the Canadian Church over its affirmation of the "sanctity" of gay relationships.

The Canadian General Synod had apparently avoided a clash with the worldwide Church this week when it decided to delay a vote on gay blessings at its meeting in St Catharines, Ontario.

The postponement was praised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who said it would help the work of the Lambeth Commission, the body he established to maintain unity.

But the Global South group of conservative primates, who represent well over half the worldwide Church, reacted with fury to a late amendment that injected new controversy into the resolution.

The amendment, approved by a large majority of the Canadian Synod to placate disappointed gay rights campaigners, affirmed the "integrity and sanctity" of homosexual relationships.

Liberal supporters of the amendment claimed that they did not intend the word "sanctity" to have any theological significance. Traditionalists argued that, in Church language, sanctity meant blessed.

Yes, but I can't find the statement that they are talking about in any of the places it would be posted. The only Primate statement came from Drexel Gomez of the West Indies. He called the affirmation of the "sanctity" of same sex relationships "unacceptable to Bible-believing, orthodox Christians" and he warned of "devastating consequences". The Global South haven't put out any statement demanding the expulsion of the Anglican Church of Canada or anything like that, that I have found. Please post it if you do find something.

Liberal supporters of the amendment claimed that they did not intend the word "sanctity" to have any theological significance. Those darned conservatives jumped to a conclusion again. Just because a bunch of bishops and priests deliberately chose to use a word like "sanctity", it doesn't mean the word itself has any theological significance in this context.

(snort!)

These guys are Communists pure and simple -- they simply assign meanings to words that are convenient to their political objective at the time. They are full of dishonest doubletalk and guile.

I saw part of the statement this morning from Primate Venables of the Southern Cone - and it's very strong. The full statement hasn't still been posted, but I'll wait for you to post it when it does.

Crunch time for the orthodox still within the Anglican Church of Canada (i.e "faithful remnant") - and there are many. Choose this day whom you will serve.
