St Monica Glo News
St. Monica Catholic Church, Archdiocese of Los Angeles ^

Posted on 06/12/2004 11:21:53 AM PDT by Land of the Irish

WELCOME BACK! Recently you each received a letter from the GLO Core Team expressing concern about the presence of the Gay and Lesbian community within the St. Monica parish; to many, it had appeared that we were not making the presence that we had in the past. As a result, this letter invited everyone to make a sign of unity and attend the 5:30 mass on April 18, and everyone was invited to a small gathering in the Duval Center afterwards. The evening was a great success and over 50 Gays and Lesbians attended mass and the event afterwards.

This is only the beginning of our project. In the next few weeks, a member of the GLO Core Team will be calling you to re-extend our welcome to St. Monica Parish Community. This will be a great opportunity for anyone to express their support or concerns about the issues facing our community. We may not have the answers, however each member of the GLO Core Team will be prepared to bring your message back to the group and or can refer you to someone else within the parish for further conversation. The goal of these phone calls is to insure the GLO Core team is representing the needs of our Catholic Gay and Lesbian Community in the parish.

If you do not receive a phone call and would like to speak with someone directly, you may call Delis at the parish office, 310-393-9287, ext. 331, or Dan, 310-393-1924. Thanks to all your participation in this project.

MEET-AND-GREET!

We have two Meet-and-Greets that are scheduled for the months of May and June. Each social is always the second Sunday of the month. The events take place in the Pastoral Center immediately following the 5:30 mass. This is a great opportunity for new members to meet with existing GLO team members and find out more about what GLO has to offer. All are Welcome! The May Meet-and-Greet is scheduled for May 9 and will be a Wine and Appetizer theme based evening. On June 13, we will have our final Meet-and-Greet of the season with our annual barbecue in the Pastoral Center patio.

As always, we need support before and after the events. Anyone interested in helping for either event should call Tom, 818-996-1515 or Dan, 310-393-1924.

BAKE SALE!

Sunday, May 16, after all the morning liturgies.

EVENSONG

Evensong is a monthly prayer service led by members of the Gay and Lesbian Outreach of St. Monica Parish. It is an opportunity for gay and lesbian Catholics to gather together in a welcoming environment for fellowship, prayer, and song. It also provides a place for the GLO community to offer up concerns and prayers to our Lord. The service is held in a relaxed, retreat-style atmosphere with the goal of spiritual growth. The service is followed by a potluck dinner. Check it out - you’ll be glad you did. We usually gather on the 3rd Friday evening of the month in the Spirituality Center. Our next Evensongs are Friday, May 21 and June 25, 2004 at 7:30 P.M. For more information, contact Don at 310-278-8006 or Chris, 310-453-4707.

GLO SPEAKER FELLOWSHIP

Join us Monday, May 3, 2004, at 7:00 P.M. in the Pastoral Center Living Room for our next Speaker Fellowship on “Making Relationships Work. . .A little insight from the parents we all wish we had.” Please come and join us for a talk on this fascinating topic, presented by Kathleen & Danny Langdon, former parishioners and internationally-known business consultants, specializing in making the work world more humane and presenters on several workshops in the field of relationships.

Hear abut the challenging, aspects of relationships . . . issues of acceptance, faith and spirituality, handling conflicts, and personal growth. Refreshments will be provided. For more information and to help, call Greg at 310-839-3284.

PUTTING THE “O” IN GLO – GLO OUTREACH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

This could be a whole new reality series, but GLO has secured a coveted “build date” for Habitat for Humanity. Our date is Saturday, June 19, 2004.

GLO needs to guarantee 20 volunteers for this build date. Don’t have tools? Don’t worry! Haven’t swung a hammer in years or ever!? Don’t worry!! Maybe you’ve only watched HGTV - that’s okay too! All are welcome!

Our day will start from St. Monica at 7:00 A.M. and will end around 4:00 P.M. Our exact site location will be determined in mid-June. We’d like to have a gathering / meal at the end of the day. Anyone have a place near church with a pool or jacuzzi?!?! Details on that after you have signed up.

So what you need to do is sign up with Mark Misch, ASAP!! He will take the first 20 people. When signing up, please give him your email address and phone numbers. He will then send you more information once you have signed up. To put any fears or questions to rest, here is some general information:

• Volunteers bring a tool belt (doesn’t have to be the full on-construction tool/nail belt, but the canvas type from Home Depot is great. They cost about $4 - $5. They’re great on the worksite – carrying personal items, nails, hammers, work gloves, etc. etc. Strongly recommend that everyone bring work gloves. Makes the work day a lot more comfortable.

• After everyone arrives, the group will gather together for introductions and directions for the day’s work. Depending on the activity, there may be a short training session so everyone understands how to do the job and the safety guidelines. Although definitely appreciated, no prior construction knowledge is necessary. You will be appropriately trained in any task you are given.

• If you can’t join us, but would like to support the work of Habitat of Humanity, you can send in your donation to Habitat for Humanity–Los Angeles, located at 1200 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 510, Los Angeles, CA 90017.

• Finally, work hard and have fun! By the end of the day, you will have made some new friends, helped someone to become a homeowner, and become a valued part of Habitat for Humanity.

TURNING POINT

And last but not least… If swinging a hammer doesn’t work for you, your last opportunity this year for Outreach with GLO is working at Turning Point on Sunday May 16, 2004. Turning Point is a program of Ocean Park Community Center that provides housing and support for the homeless. While they are aided in part by the city of Santa Monica, LA County, and state and federal programs, a major portion of their funding comes from private donations. The facility targets people in the Santa Monica and West Los Angeles areas. Turning Point’s priority is to provide for those who desire secure employment and/or financial stability and a place to live.

On the third Sunday of every month the St. Monica Peace & Justice Committee supplies dinner for about 50-60 of their residents. GLO will be in charge of this task in June. We will also prepare 50-60 sack lunches for the client’s Monday workday. The GLO culinary volunteers would need to arrive at the shelter at 3:00 P.M. to prepare. Of course, it may be necessary to arrive earlier, depending upon what we are serving. The meal is served at 6:00 P.M. We would be done around 7:30 P.M. Donations of food and funds are needed to make this happen.

For more information and to sign up for ANY of the outreach opportunities, please call Mark Misch, 310 503 9455 or email: markmisch@hotmail.com. Please put GLO in the Subject line. We need your help!! Thanks! GLO BOWL

Bowling takes place at Mar Vista Bowling Lanes on the 4th Friday of the month. Our next outings are April 23, at 8:00 P.M., and May 28, June 25. The price per game is $4.75 and shoes, $4.00. Directions: 12125 Venice Blvd (in Mar Vista, corner of Venice Blvd and Grandview; one streetlight west of Centinela. Mar Vista Bowl’s phone, 310-391-5288. Questions, call Paul, 323-465-5486 or 323-841-1326.

I thought, for sure, this "Catholic" church was not recognizied by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, because it openly condones and supports sodomy.

However, Son of Satan, Mahoney, proves me wrong. St Monica Church

Poor Saint Monica who had to endure a bad husband, then the corrupt youth of Augustine, and now this sodomite parade.
With her prayers, I don't doubt that this parish will return to the Catholic Faith one day - even if that day isn't within our lifetime.
We can all learn from Saint Monica, who personified patient suffering.

Isn't this a little odd?

IIRC, St. Monica's is the parish of Gov. Arnold, former Gov. Davis and Richard Riordan?

Yes, it is for most folks.

But not for queers and clowns.

I don't doubt it, Schwarzenegger made the sign of the cross with his left hand at President Reagan's viewing in California.

The Church has no right to promote the sins of homosexual activity and the non-Christian political ideologies of "gay pride" and coming out". These things have nothing whatsoever to do with the Catholic faith.

You don't need to tell me that. Tell that to that Prince of Church, Roger Cardinal Mahoney. Better yet, tell his boss.

The Holy Father has always condemned the sin of homosexual activity and has most recently spoken out against same sex "marriage".

Actions speak louder than words. Why is Mahoney still a Cardinal?

That's true. I noticed he made the Sign of the Cross from right to left instead of left to right. I thought perhaps he had an Orthodox background.

"All the world loves a clown." I feel discriminated against and persecuted, because I do not love clowns. In fact, they freak me out, with or without the addition of lesbians.

In fact, they freak me out...

John Wayne Gacy made a full confession, admitting there were 28 bodies under his house and garage and that he had dumped another five in a local river.

I've always been told its because our dear Holy Father believes with his whole heart in "collegiality." The miscreant bishops all over the world know this and manipulate his faith in them to no end. Poor Holy Father's ignorance is ours to suffer, I guess.

GLO - a Gay & Lesbian Outreach in a "Catholic" Church???

I wonder how the newsletter would read if we changed GLO to the following acronyms?:

MMO - Masturbators & Murderers Outreach

PPO - Paedophiles & Pederasts Outreach

KLO - Kleptomaniancs and Larsenists Outreach

FAO - Fornicators & Adulterers Outreach

Gosh, just think what marvellous, wholesome outreaches we could launch in the future paradise of Mahoneyland.

We could list every grubby little sin (and big ones too) that we could think of; find people who are proud to affirm themselves as practitioners of these sins; encourage them to flock together with birds of the same feather; give each group a title such as St. Monica's Prostitutes; and then make them an official evangelisation organism of the "Catholic Church" with a "Cardinal's" blessing.

I am so excited about the prospects for the New Springtime and New Evangelisation in L.A.!!! (/sarcasm off)
