The 1962 Missal Epistle and Gospel for the 17th Sunday after Pentecost

EPISTLE
Ephesians 4: 1-6

Brethren: I, a prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called. With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity, careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. One body and one spirit, as you are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all, who is blessed for ever and ever. Amen.

GOSPEL
Matthew 22: 34-46

At that time the Pharisees came to Jesus, and one of them, a doctor of the law, asked Him, tempting Him: Master, which is the great commandment of the law? Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets. And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying: What think you of Christ, whose son is He? They say to Him: David's. He saith to them: How then doth David, in spirit, call Him Lord, saying: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit on my right hand until I make Thy enemies Thy footstool? If David then call Him Lord, how is He his son? And no man was able to answer Him a word; neither durst any man, from that day forth, ask Him any more questions.

No, thank you

I would say this simple Epistle is timely in light of our conversation earlier.

I've been thinking about what you said and applying this most appropriate scripture.

I so look forward to this thread on Sunday mornings.

I would say this simple Epistle is timely in light of our conversation earlier.

No doubt about it. It was the first thing I thought of when I read it too.

I've been thinking about what you said and applying this most appropriate scripture.

You've been applying this most appropriate scripture long before this morning, and long before I said a word. As I said before, you've shown yourself more than willing to put away the sword and mete out Mercy. And don't think that doesn't have a debilitating effect on those who brandish the sword readily. It does or can have such an effect because it introduces the Shame that should be felt in brandishing it gleefully.

This forum wouldn't be the same without you.

This morning, Fr. didn't use these readings, even though they ere listed in the bulletin, and used red vestments.

I have no idea why, and was going to ask him after Mass, but he was busy with other people, and I didn't want to make a big deal about it.

Do you know if there was an alternitive Mass allowed? I do know he mentioned Fr. Jogues, a martyr killed by Indians.

I don't know to be honest. I'm sure if your priest is on the up and up, there must be a mechanizism for the alternative he employed.

I've pinged a few others who may be able to answer you.

In the US and Canada, yesterday was also a third class feast day of Sts. John de Brebeuf, Isaac Jogues and Companions - Martyrs. The vestment colors for this Mass are red.

Thank you for clearing that up. Fr. Issac Jogues and companions were murdered by the Indians about 45 miles from here at Auriesville shrine, so I suppose it was a local interest to have a Mass for them.

I'm wondering if he had to do the Novus Ordo reading to make the Mass licit (legal?)

That is also the shrine for Blessed Kateri, and I have made a few pilgrimages there, and have kissed her relic.
