Next Pope to be Portuguese?

While the Portuguese Church has been discreet over the topic over who will succeed Pope John Paul II, it has become increasingly evident that Lisbon Cardinal D. José da Cruz Policarpo has a growing number of supporters who believe he should be Pope number 263, it was revealed this week by the Correio da Manhã.

The latest example of the 68-year old Lisbon Bishop’s growing favouritism comes from the French magazine Paris-Match, which, among 14 candidates, highlight six, one of them being D. José Policarpo.

In addition, the US publication, The National Catholic Reporter, has also forecast that D. Policaro could emerge as the consensual candidate from Ibero-Latin-Americas block.

In recent years, several meetings and conferences organised by the Vatican have been held in Lisbon, with analysts confessing this could be due to the extremely favourable light in which D. Policarpo is seen in the Catholic world.

The Lisbon Cardinal has a number of advantages counting in his favour, such as the fact that he his one of the longest serving bishops (he was ordained in 1978). Other features in his favour include the excellent relations he enjoys with bishops in Africa and South America, along with support received from so-called intellectual French Catholics and modernist wings of the Church. However, most significantly, he is also seen as the man who could serve as a bridge to close widening gaps in certain sectors of the Church.

A notable disadvantage is the fact that D. Policarpo is a smoker, which could be looked upon negatively in the English-speaking Catholic world. Having never had his own parish, and a certain lack in fluency in languages also count against him.

In another related story, the Lisbon Cardinal had his speech interrupted and was insulted by a youth while addressing thousands at the Notre Dame in Paris.

The young man rose to the altar, where he called D. Policarpo a “heretic”. The youth was rapidly overpowered, but was later seen distributing pamphlets with other youths that included photographs of Hindus worshiping at the Fátima Sanctuary.

The young man is reported to be part of a group of Catholic extremists that has been suspended by the Vatican.

I would be very happy about that. The Blessed Mother said at Fatima that Portugal would always preserve the Faith. Maybe this is what she meant.

Will this Italian be a Hindu or an Anglican?

My only immediate response is annoyance at the use of the phrase 'Portuguese Church'. Why do people insist on calling it the American Church, the French Church, etc. For goodness sakes, is it too much to write 'the Church in Portugal', 'the Church in America', 'the Church in France'? Of course, people will respond "thats just semantics" but it really is an important distinction.

"Why do people insist on calling it the American Church, the French Church, etc."

It’s a little more than semantics. Amchurch has its USCCB, which voted overwhelmingly to leave it up to the individual bishops to violate canon law and give Holy Communion to public facilitators of abortion, to turn Ascension Thursday into Ascension Sunday, etc.

Canada has it’s own CCCB, which makes its own rules, etc.

Prior to VC II, Catholic meant “universal”. New Church, however, defines Catholic as “diversified”.

Heck, nowadays you can even be “catholic” while remaining outside the Catholic Church.

Oh, Canadia has its own too? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. The USCCB and these other council thingys get lost fast in the paperwork. They run the Church like its some kind of corporation.

I'm not too familiar with corporate politics. But in my experience, when something goes wrong in the 'branch office,' nobody takes responsibility. And because its a bureaucratic mess, everybody gets blamed, and nobody is held accountable.

Yes,there is a subtle and beautiful distinction between the Church in the United States,or America etc.,and the American Church or the Canadian Church.

The one connotes a unified, universal Church wherever it is located,it conforms with our creed, one can recognize that the Church is One,Holy,Catholic and Apostolic.

The other defines the church by its location, not good nor does it seem true.

Thanks for warning us. You can be sure when the unCatholic Reporter starts testing the waters by floating names of a possible successor to John Paul II,their ccandidate will not bear much resemblance to anything Catholic.

How too bad that in order to get the drums rolling with their own readership, they also have to expose their preferences to those of us thy consider the enemy.

I try to remember to thank God for the internet on a frequent basis, and for Free Republic and the network of informed Catholics we have been able to connect with across the miles.

To receive the support of the French intellectual class, a future pope must surely jetison all traditional positions and extol the virtues of modern life. This would of course mean allowing priests to marry, permitting contraception and opening up the priesthood to women once celebacy, sexuality and ministry have been redefined "to suit modern tastes". A whole new ball game and one which for more people will put into question the illegitamacy of modern papacies.

Well who, pray tell, is responsible for permitting the Fatima sacrilege?

He's 68 now. Furthermore, this is a Portuguese publication.....and I've never seen him mentioned elsewhere.

Then there's the old saying "he who goes into the conclave a pope, comes out a cardinal" or words to that effect.

I'll bet my next pay check that he doesn't succeed JPII.

What? Are thee going to be a series of Papal debates and an endless stream of Gallup polls, too? The English-speaking world needs to get a grip.

Nah! The next pope will be Castrillon Cardinal de Hoyos or an African whose family converted from Islam and will have an attitude about Modernism too.
