EEks!!Something went wrong with my private Freep capacity. Ia t came back to me and I don't know how to move it back.

So maybe part of what I said wasn't meant to go anywhere for the moment. The other reason I don't plaster Vlasney's name all over is a positive data point that cancels a negative one. Vlasney did concelebrate Bishop Vasa's installation Mass and Vasa is very good. It could have ben a protocol matter but I am looking at it.

Thank you. I tend to mix up the two dioceses.
I remember having met Ryan in Boise a little over twenty years ago. He had altar girls back then, even in the base chapel at Mt. Home AFB where I was stationed at the time.

This may look like a duplicate but I noticed that my last answer directly to you came back addresssed to me also. Very strange.

Terrible selection, but par for the course for these heretics known as the USCCB. Skystad has a checkered past in dealing with child molesting priests and his diocese has just filed for bankruptcy. Skylstad also indicated that if Kerry came to his diocese, he would be welcome to receive Holy Communion.

Well, at least Bernardin is happy today.

Not a good choice, in my opinion. What kind of a message does this send? That leadership should be with a prelate who was rather soft on misdemeaning priests in the past, but who is willing to play clever tricks like bankruptcy in order to try and skirt the issue? I don't know how Bishop Skylstad is in terms of orthodoxy of doctrine, but even his past and the bankruptcy make this a very strange message. The message that the USCCB should send is to choose someone of rock solid orthodoxy, and who is known to take a hard line on priests committing sexual indiscretions and crimes. I think Cardinal George would have been a good choice.

I didn't know that about the "Vagina Monologues". That should be disqualifying for Skylstad in and of itself.

The last decent thing to come out of Gonzaga is John Stockton. A worthless university.

Can you share some information as to why it is worthless? My sister is thinking about that university in the future for my nephew (they live in Northern Idaho). Anything you could share I'll pass along to my sister.

(he's only 10, so we've got plenty of time to decide where to send him).

I have great hope and I am now satisfied that Skylstad and his ilk are going to take a beating as the scandal points more and more clearly to the problems the homosexual element in the Church have caused.

True. I think it will be better for Skylstad and his ilk to "take a beating" publicly for the time being, rather than to stuff them back into the closet, away from everyone to see.

Greetings from the land of the entirely too busy....

Bad choice? Thanks for keeping us all informed.

The good news, though, is that at least some of the nominees were conservative.

The Good Bishop is one of the last of Hunthausen's boys left. We need another Cardinal Hickey to be sent by Rome to CLEAN HOUSE.

I know GU well. I have friends there, both staff and student. I know Fr. Spitzer, the incredible President. If the entire religous community there was half as pius as Dr. Spitzer, we'd have no problem. They are trying to return to orthodoxy, the younger priests are good to great. It is the grey haired poofters that create the problem. The law school is seen as a regional leader, the undergrad program is too liberal for my taste, but as I say they are getting better.

Bishop William Skylstad Background Response to Possible Enquiries Regarding Father Ed Marier

It has been brought to my attention that some individuals have been in contact with the media and others in a public campaign of slandering Fr. Ed Marier, a priest in good standing with the Spokane Diocese and the pastor in Colton-Uniontown. They are attempting to use the media for their reprehensible purposes. I condemn their actions in the strongest terms.

These actions constitute slander and defamation, both against Fr. Marier and the Diocese. They are an attempt to discredit and defame this Diocese's solid record of accomplishment since 1989 in properly handling and responding to the issue of protecting children from abuse. These accusations clearly constitute an invasion of Fr. Marier's rights to personal privacy.

In order to appeal to the integrity of the media and in the interests of putting occurrences in Fr. Marier's life in proper perspective, so as not to allow these slanderous accusations to go unchallenged, with the permission and at the behest of Fr. Marier and his legal counsel, I have been authorized to provide the following information.

About eight years ago a housekeeper brought to my attention that while working at Fr. Marier’s residence at the parish rectory in Wilbur she had come across a sexual book while cleaning his bedroom. I took her word at face value, called Fr. Marier and confronted him with this information. He conceded he did have adult sexual material and he agreed he should receive counseling for this. He was relieved of his ministry and sent to a respected institute in the Midwest for several months of intensive in-patient therapy and counseling. In the winter of 1997, the parish council and parish in Wilbur were fully informed by me in a public meeting of the reason for his removal and that he had been sent for therapy and counseling. I state to you unequivocally the accusation against him at the time had nothing to do with abuse of minors.

Following his counseling, based on the judgment of Fr. Marier's numerous counselors and therapists and the advice of his mental health counselor, it was my decision to place Fr. Marier back in ministry with the understanding that he would continue to receive professional counseling and that his conduct would be monitored.

Unfortunately, Fr. Marier suffered a relapse and in late 1999 he was cited by law enforcement authorities for lewd behavior in an adult book store in Spokane. On forfeiture of a $500 bond, the citation against him was amended to disorderly conduct and the matter was closed by Court order.

Following that incident, based on the advice of his mental health counselor and the Diocesan Sexual Abuse Committee sitting at the time, I determined that Fr. Marier could be kept in his parish ministry and that he did not, and does not, present a danger or risk to children. I hope this case will be viewed as one might view a clergy member with an alcohol problem. We all know there are priests so afflicted who can, and still do, perform as fine ministers.

There is now rumor and innuendo being spread by some, that the material found by the housekeeper ten years ago was something more serious than previously reported. Fr. Marier categorically denies this accusation. There is nothing in the treatment record and the reports of his numerous professional mental health counselors and therapists to support such an accusation. I believe Fr. Marier and have seen nothing to the contrary.

However, upon being informed that there is now an allegation the material found ten years ago was something more serious than initially reported, we have reported the allegation to the Spokane Police Department, as is the policy in this Diocese.

I today am reiterating my personal support for Fr. Marier to continue with his ministry in this Diocese. I also personally condemn in no uncertain terms the unchristian actions of slander directed toward Fr. Marier and the Diocese.

I have every confidence that the parishioners of Uniontown-Colton and the people of the Diocese as a whole will support this decision. I encourage the media to consult with their management and legal counsel before publishing any story on this matter.

The Good Deacon predicted that this result would obtain. I found it beyond belief that the USCCB would elect a BANKRUPT (both morally -- see his statement above, and financially) as President. I was wrong, Sinkspur was right.

I get to enjoy cold crow for supper.
