DUSSELDORF, Germany -- Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in Mel Gibson's blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," presented the film yesterday to 25,000 youth delegates at 2005 World Youth Day. He also addressed the youth and led them in a decade of the rosary.

The event was held at the UTL Arena, an outdoor stadium in Dusseldorf, one of the three German cities hosting World Youth Day activities, last Tuesday through tomorrow.

. The others are Cologne and Bonn.

The activity was sponsored by Holy Cross Family Ministries of Easton, Mass., which is composed of ministries furthering the mission of Servant of God Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, the "Rosary priest," Catholic media pioneer and sainthood candidate.

Kerri Caviezel, Jim's wife, gave testimony and introduced her husband, a committed Catholic.

Joining Jim and Kerri Caviezel in leading the Rosary were Holy Cross Father John Phalen, president of Holy Cross Family Ministries; Holy Cross Father Wilfred Raymond, national director of Family Theater Productions, Hollywood, one of HCFM's member ministries; and actor Clarence Gilyard ("Left Behind," "Top Gun," "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Matlock").

"We are grateful to Jim Caviezel for participating in this important event at World Youth Day by giving his personal testimony and praying the rosary with our Catholic young people," the Rev. Phalen said. "We pray that their experience at this event and at all other World Youth Day activities will affirm for the youth the importance and benefits of prayer, especially the rosary with its profound mysteries."

Holy Cross Family Ministries, in the spirit of its founder, Father Peyton, promotes and supports the spiritual well-being of the family. Faithful to Mary, the Mother of God, the Family Rosary, which Father Peyton started in 1942 in Albany, N.Y., encourages family prayer, especially the rosary, as does Family Rosary International with locations in 17 countries. Family Theater Productions, Hollywood, founded by Father Peyton in 1947, directs its efforts to the evangelization of culture using mass media to entertain, inspire and educate families. The Father Peyton Family Institute, Easton, and Lima, Peru, focuses on research and education in family life ministry and the relationship of spirituality to family. Holy Cross Family Ministries is sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Father Peyton, a Holy Cross priest, reached millions throughout the world with his messages, "The family that prays together stays together" and "A world at prayer is a world at peace." He conducted 40 rosary prayer crusades on six continents that drew some 28 million people, and he produced more than 600 radio and television programs that featured hundreds of Hollywood stars and had more than 10,000 broadcasts.

He died on June 3, 1992 in San Pedro, Calif., at age 83 and is buried in Easton, close to the Father Patrick Peyton Center, a pilgrimage and visitors' center and the international headquarters for Holy Cross Family Ministries. His cause for sainthood was opened on June 1, 2001 by the Diocese of Fall River, Mass. The Vatican has bestowed on him the title "Servant of God."

If you don't have EWTN on TV, you can go to ewtn.com, click on the "Television" button, choose "Live TV - English" and then either RealMedia or Windows Media". Here's a partial schedule if you want to watch:

MASS VIGIL LIVE (4 HOURS)
Saturday August 20 2:00 PM
Encore: Saturday August 20 8:00 PM

CLOSING MASS LIVE (4 HOURS)
Sunday August 21, 3:00 AM
Encore: Sunday August 21, 2PM & 9PM

I've been glued to the TV for the past several days in the (OK, it's miniscule!) hope that I'll spot my son there! He's traveling with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, and is staying in Dusseldorf.

Have not heard a word! Emailed her 4 times ... no response. Perhaps she lost her Blackberry or she's just too exhausted with all of the festivities to respond. It all ends tomorrow with the Mass ... perhaps afterwards, we'll received a series of reports that she saved but forgot to send :-)

If you have cable or dish satellite tv, check your listings for EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network). Here is the remainder of their coverage (it all concludes tomorrow).
