It wasn't until two years after his ordination as a Roman Catholic priest that the Rev. Fred Daley acknowledged he might be gay.
"I was coming down the stairs for morning Mass, and I felt this real deep ache and pain in the pit of my stomach," he said. "It was the first time I was recognizing an ache within that my activity and work and ministry was covering up, and avoiding something."
A light went on, he said.
"I began to become aware of my sexual feelings and desires," he said. He was 27.
Almost 30 years later - after a painful, prayerful and mostly lonely journey - he disclosed his sexual orientation to his Utica congregation in May 2004. As speculation grows that the Vatican is preparing a document that would bar gays from ordination, Daley says he's proud to be a celibate, gay priest.
He said news of the forthcoming Vatican document and visits to American seminaries worries many people - clergy and lay, gay and straight - that the Roman Catholic Church does not welcome gays in its pulpits or pews.
"The church is least faithful to Jesus when it is in the business of excluding," Daley said. "The church should be rejoicing that gay men are ready and willing to use their talents to energize the church. To deprive the church of these gifted men would be a terrible loss."
Daley and other gay priests say the attention to sexual orientation blames gay priests for problems in the church, including the clergy sexual abuse crisis and the shortage of priests. It also reinforces stereotypes of gays as immoral and unable to control their sexual impulses, Daley and others say.
"To the extent the church uses outdated and inaccurate information about homosexual orientation, they are indirectly encouraging the oppression and physical violence against gays and lesbians," Daley said.
Daley, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church in Utica, is the first priest in the seven-county Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse to publicly disclose he is gay. He is thought to be among just a handful of gay priests in the country who have done so.
What really was this ache? Wasn't it the ache of duplicity that he really no longer believed in the Catholic Faith. The evidence for this is his notion that "inclusion" trumps all doctrine and morals. The dogma of inclusion which trumps all is what liberalism accomplishes when it denatures Christianity. This is this priest's religion: a denatured Christianity. Instructive in this regard is a comparative biography called "The Newman Brother." Here you can clinically observe what liberalism does to Christian belief in the person of Francis Newman, Cardinal John Henry Newman's brother. This is why I believe that John Henry Newman fought all his life against this pathology.
Jesus told us about "the father of lies",looks like we have found another of his spawn. What is really scary is all of the duped out there, sleeping in the pews.
Neither ... this is Bishop James M. Moynihan's diocese. The State of NY is filled with these 'servants' - from Rockville Centre on LI right up to Rochester, Syracuse and Albany. Aren't we blessed!
Calling himself "gay" really means that he has acted out on his homosexual feelings. He states his desires started at 27 years of age and have lasted for 30 years. He claims to be celibate, but my question is how long have you been celibant? 30 years? 10 years? 10 days?
I am a female, married and the mother of four children. If I was to characterize myself it would be in that order. Notice how this priest and others like him will insert the word "gay" before the word priest. That tells me that being gay is more important to them than being a priest. I do not go around calling myself a heterosexual female mother of four. My sexual orientation is irrelevant. It should of been for this priest also. There was absolutely no reason to announce his orientation unless he was more proud of being gay than a priest. It seems to me the only people who love to label themselves are gays! That's what the sin of pride will do to you.
It used to be understood that everyone who was not married was (supposed to be) chaste. Some homosexuals have convinced themselves that since they have no plans to marry, that they are not subject to the standard of chastity.
How times have changed!
That *is* still the rule for Catholics...unfortunate how many are unaware of it. :(
Yeah.
He "came out" and got a very sympathetic interview.
How convenient!
Daley said he had been grappling with going public for some time. He said he spent years hiding his nature, and felt dishonest. The feeling grew as he watched gays be blamed for the sexual abuse scandal. >>>
Sound right to me.
Amazing! That is the argument put forth against Bishop Hubbard by one of his accusers. He was a youth attending catholic day camp when, he claims, he was approached by the bishop for sexual favors. The argument given was precisely the one you posited. The young man eventually commited suicide, a lawyer took up the cause and lost in court.
Bingo!
Yes, it is scary and sad. In my (former) RC parish, following the blatant attempt by the pastor to have 'confirmandi' perfom liturgical dance (an attempt that, with God's blessing, I was able to squelch), I was emboldened enough to approach some of the more 'orthodox' parishioners for support in eliminating other abuses. At the parish picnic, I approached one of the most dominant female parishioners, active in just about every aspect of parish life, asking for her support in having the GIRM respected with regard to a Crucifix in the Sanctuary during Mass. Her reaction? Give it up! You'll get used to it with time, just like we did.
At that point, I realized that the battle would be single handed and pursued it as far as I could. When the EEM dropped the consecrated host on the floor and the pastor averted her questioning glance, I buried my head in my hands and asked our Lord to guide me to a holy priest, a reverent liturgy and a welcoming community. That prayer was answered the day I walked into the local Maronite Church. Before me were 3 alcoves in which were - the Tabernacle, a beautiful and reverent traditional Crucifix and the Book of the Gospels. Before me, illuminated with uplights, were the most essential elements of our Cathoic faith. On that day, I pulled out my rosary and began praying in thanksgiving. I have never looked back. Since then, I have met some extraordinary priests, all Maronite. The good ones are out there. We must pray for them!
Homosexual Agenda Ping.
Homosexuals should be banned, forbidden, fired, tossed out, given the boot, shown the door, evicted, defrocked, given the pink slip, ousted, and otherwise eliminated from seminaries and the priesthood.
At the very least.
Freepmail me AND DirtyHarryY2K if you want on/off this pinglist.
Note: Even if they say they are celibate, it's obvious that a homosexual who identifies as such is using the priesthood to advance the "gay" agenda in general or to further his own sexual perversion.
It's utterly shameful and beyond vile that homosexuals have been allowed to infiltrate the Catholic Church as they have. A thorough cleansing is in order.
And the fact that they can't marry has nothing to do with it. Notice all the articles about public school teachers molesting children. No big headlines about that.
From the article:
While on vacation a few years after his ordination, Daley visited a gay bar and recognized the source of the ache in the pit of his stomach.
Yep, that's what I would do on my vacation: stroll into a gay bar for no reason.
Gimme a break.
I keep reading of homosexual priests like this. They do not teach Church doctrine that homosexuality is intrinscially disordered. They cannot else they would have to accept that of themselves. They have rejected Church teachings for the orientation of the flesh.
The Catholic Church is a huge hurdle to homosexuals who want their orientations affirmed. They are bent on destroying the Church from within.
Yeah, it's satan, alright. Right there descending the stairs with the glow in his tummy.
Here we go again, with more of that attack media about Pope Benedict's recent instruction.
This is only the beginning. We need to see that people like this man are removed from the priesthood and those like him are not admitted in the future.
If that leaves "20%" remaining in the priesthood, fine, let's go with those and gain more of same over time. Most Catholics would welcome the "cutback" of the numbers as they now exist, given that this guy's glowing tummy is a good example of the average gay man in the Catholic priesthood, lying about the vows they say they are committed to.
No, I think what he's admitting to is he's been lying all along and at the age of "27" he's feeling emboldened enough to descend the stairs with the emerging glow in his tummy and finally "come out" while wearing the collar.
Not like it's a surprise to this guy at the age of "27," is my point, just as you point out.
There are probably going to be increasing appearances of statements/articles such as this, about various "revelations" by "priests" already in the Church -- given the large numbers of liberals AND homosexuals in media, eager to try to demean the Catholic church and ridicule the credibiliity of Pope Benedict's instruction (as also, the Church's), AND, to continue the homosexual denigration of the faith.
I've even read lately them writing that "Jesus was gay" (in their imaginings) and if anything, statemetns such as that and this one, this article, reinforce to my view that the presence of Christ, who He is, Christianity, is just a game in their view...
You know, satan's defined as the deceiver. I think this bears witness to that fact. Deception, all the petty, banal harassments and lies that accompany it, it's all right here in this very significant issue.
Yes, exactly, which is why the issue of "celibate AND CHASTE" is a significant part of the vows of the priesthood.
Celibacy is one thing. Chastity is another. Both are an aspect to the vows they say they swear to before God.
As in, they've sworn falsely.
