As a former member of that, ummmm, organization, I have a standing open offer to answer any FReeper's qusetions about Scientology, either in open forum, or via FReepmail.
I will do my best to answer as promptly, concisely and accurately as possible, but as I left some time ago, I'm not always privy to the latest wrinkles.
Still, from what I can gather from my few remaining contacts not that much has really changed!

This thread was very interesting. Thanks for reposting the link.
I read Dianetics as a teenager but only after reading Hubbard's science fiction. His books were so awful I wanted to know why he was so well known. I guess I thought he had to be a better "religious leader" than author. Luckily my impression was that Dianetics was just as horrible as the rest of his fiction.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm still puzzled by the phenomenon but you cleared up some things for me.

Please forgive if this has already been asked as I can't possibly read over the 200 responses already posted.
What made you leave and did you enter into another belief system?

In twenty five million words or less:
Both the organization and the Tech ceased to be going in a direction I could agree with or support.

The first time I ever heard of this, a man came to my door and when I opened it he said very seriously, "Do you know how to know?" I thought he was an idiot and would never have considered getting involved in Scientology. Years later, my husband to be showed me tons of material they had sent him in an effort to recruit him, and then I really KNEW how to know not to get involved with them. He couldn't get rid of them, so I did it for him!

Good for you! Usually even dying isn't sufficient to get you off the mailing list.

EST, The Forum and People Synergistically Involved (PSI) were all spinoofs FRom Scientology.
I callem "California touchy huggy, feely, kissy seminars. All have been semi-successful FRom time to time.
Don't know if any of them are still out there or not -- I lost interest in them in 1999.

This is where you've lost me. I'm too much into the body/mind/soul mentality and this Thetan thing doesn't compute.

Why didn't Kay Keiser ever get back into entertainment?

Dunno. I suppose it would help if I knew who Kay Keiser is...

OK, Here's a question for debate.....
Anyway,Scientologists believe all your problems stem from"engrams",or negative messages you got while in mom's womb.
What about a pregnant woman in a coma, on life support?
Where are the negative messages supposed to be coming from in that case?

Still plenty of crap happening. Nurses talking, the machine that goes
ping!, Doctors thumping the belly, next of kin blubbering (or gloating), TVs blaring, etc.
There's plenty of birth trauma and child rearing and such. But the really bad stuff conveniently all happened in past lives...

When did they come to be called "Clams"? I first became aware of the having to deal with a malicious little piece of work that apparently originated from there called "cancelbunny".

It may have been asked already. Is it true that Hubbard started Scientology as a joke to see if people would follow it?
