Boy Aged Six Cured from Cancer After Papal Blessing
Kath ^ | November 30, 2005

A six year old boy from Dusseldorf suffering from cancer was blessed by Pope Benedict XVI. during the last World Youth Day before the beginning of the meeting with the seminarists. It turns out now, that little Victor is in good health again, as reported by the German newspapers "Bild" and "Express" on last Tuesday.

Details concerning the healing have not been known. After his encounter with the Pope, Victor was treated once with chemotherapy, the reports say. Whatever has caused the healing: everybody is very happy that Victor is in good health again.

Please, a word of caution. The 7 criteria that Benedict XIV laid out in the 1700s for evaluating miracles include the fact that no treatment for a disease may have been given or if any treatment was given, it must have had no relation whatsoever to the disease. For instance, in the case of a newborn whose eyes were eaten away by a caustic solution put in his eyes by mistake, he was "treated" with cold compresses but no treatment was possible for his eyes. After Mother Cabrini's nuns prayed all night, his eyes were perfectly restored the next morning. This was one of the miracles for her canonization; it took place a few years after her death. This is from Patricia Treece's book, Nothing Short of a Miracle (Our Sunday Visitor, 1994).

It's hard to believe the child was not receiving treatment. We need more details.

Another two criteria are that the cure be lasting and complete. We need more details and time has to pass before we know that it is not temporary remission. Normally miracle claims regarding living figures, esp. popes are not broadcast, precisely because one can't be sure for a long time. It would have been better if the principals in this had kept it to themselves for a while.

How is this any different than Ernest Angley?

Ok, let the hate mail begin.

This article does state that after the boy met with the Pope, he did receive one round of chemo...and one round of chemo can put a person into a complete remission, tho it will not keep them in that remission...

I know...my son had a very rare, usually fatal type of leukemia, and he was incredibly ill at diagnosis...yet just one round of chemo put him into a complete remission...he had months and months of chemo after that, and even after all that chemo he still relapsed...so you are right, it will take a lot of time to know if this childs remission is permanent...

I do pray that this young boy will be cured...cancer in anyone is horrible, but in a child, its completely devastating...

Night and day and unlike Ernest, the Pope doesn't wear a rug.

I'm happy for the child, but this means almost nothing with regards to BXVI. "Post hoc" does not mean "propter hoc."

The extent of its meaning with regards to the pope is that he is virtuous enough to pray for others. That is no small feat. And I do believe all prayers are answered. But since they are not always answered in the ways we had hoped, we cannot presume cause and effect.

This line in the article suffices to take your concerns into account;

"Whatever has caused the healing: everybody is very happy that Victor is in good health again."

I think the problem is the actual title of the article:

Boy Aged Six Cured from Cancer After Papal Blessing

While not knowing any details, as others have suggested it will probably be a long while before the medical profession can determine that this boy is definitively cured of cancer. Even then, much more effort would be needed to determine that it was a true miraculous cure over and above nature, if in fact, this possibility were determined to be taken seriously. This short article falls short of explicitly trying to make that case.

Ernest Angley is a badly dressed hillbilly with a terrible rug. He's an absolute nutjob...

Who is he?

A goofy little televangelist with a bad wig and a girdle who brings people up on stage and cures them of whatever illness or addiction they have.
