ROCHESTER -- The Rev. Michael Volino was sentenced today to 15 months in federal prison and 10 years supervised release in connection with child pornography charges.
U.S. District Judge David Larimer also prohibited the Catholic priest from ministering to children or working with school programs. Volino is an Elmira native.
"I think Father Volino had more than an idle curiosity. It was extreme," Larimer said.
Defense lawyer John Parrinello had asked for a sentence that did not include jail time. He argued that there had never been an allegation of molestation or inappropriate physical contact.
He also had asked that community service be allowed for the priest.
"We have a very dedicated, faithful treasure, in terms of the Catholic Church," Parrinello said.
Some of several dozen supporters -- parents, siblings, priests and friends -- wept at the sentencing.
A statement from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester said Volino will remain on adminsitrative leave and cannot engage in any public minsitry.
Bishop Matthew H. Clark plans to review the case and, pending the outcome of his review, may forward the information to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome, which could enforce a range of actions, including dismissal from the clerical state.
Father Volino was given 60 days to turn himself in; he was given permission to spend the holidays at his family's home in Elmira.
Another one bites the dust.
In prison he will have the chance to minister to others who share his predilection, and not to unsuspecting families.
What did actually he do? The defence lawyer said he didn't molest or something like that. Is it from keeping child porn in his computer? Or simply somebody found out he's checking out porn websites?
Throw him in jail and throw away the key. Freaking sick bastard.

That's insane! The dude may well be the King of Perverts, but teaching a couple of kids to shoot a pellet gun is NOT evidence of such.
Among the Web sites Volino frequented were those titled "boys on your screen" and "boyhoodparadise," the affidavit alleges. Some images showed boys as young as 10 to 12 years old engaging in sexual activity, the FBI alleges.
The priest has now been graduated to sex with adults, (involuntary). He will make some Bubba prisoner a wonderful bitch.
