A Christmas Carol?

Posted on 12/24/2005 3:23:48 PM PST by conserv371

Is Joy to the World a Christmas carol or a song about another event? I remember when it struck me that this "carol" really does not have much to do with Christmas except maybe the first verse. Instead it deals with the time the Lord Jesus Christ will set up reign on this earth. At that time, righteousness will prevail. It will be a time of true peace. The lion will lay down with the lamb. The vices of today will be gone since they will be unlawful. It will be a foretaste of eternity with the Devil bound. I look forward to that day when all will be joy. Even so come, Lord Jesus.

Joy to the World
Christmas Carol Lyrics

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

You're right, it isn't all about one night in Bethlehem. Better cross it off my caroling list.

Rolls eyes.

Joy to the World is a postmillennial hymn as is It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.

Another non-Christmas Christmas carol is O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.

Thanks for posting all the lyrics. I enjoy carols and hymns that contain all the verses. They usually have more pop than the first verse. Which is usually the only verse we hear.

The advent season is about the coming of Christ. Either the first or the second coming is fair game.

As for being postmillennial, you might have a point. The words are by Isaac Watts in the early 1700's.
