Dissident Curran to Lecture on Pope Benedict XV
n 1986, the Vatican's then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger declared dissident Rev. Charles Curran unfit to teach Catholic theology at the Catholic University of America because of Curran's views on abortion, contraception, divorce and premarital sex. Curran has obstinately continued to teach theology at Southern Methodist University. Now the College of the Holy Cross has invited Curran to lecture on Thursday, February 16, on the theology of Pope John Paul II and the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI. Holy Cross touts Curran as an "expert" on Catholic moral theology. What do you think of that? (We thought so!) Protest: Rev. Michael McFarland, S.J., President, College of the Holy Cross, 1 College St., Worcester, MA 01610; (508) 793-2011; mmcfarla@holycross.edu

The festival is sponsored by Notre Dame academic departments with funding from the Gay and Lesbian Alumni/ae of the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College. To protest: Rev. John Jenkins, C.S.C., President, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN 46556; (574) 631-3903; john.i.jenkins.1@nd.edu Link to Notre Dame announcement...

CNS vs. CNS: False and Misleading Report
The Cardinal Newman Society has demanded that the Catholic News Service issue a correction and apologize for a highly misleading and damaging article about the Society posted on February 7. The article introduces the outrageous allegation that the Society is "setting up a teaching authority independent of the bishops," but no source is cited as making the allegation. Catholic News Service editor Tony Spence has refused to withdraw the article but is reviewing the Society's concerns. Meanwhile, the article will be published in newspapers and magazines across the country. Let the Catholic News Service know what you think of tabloid journalism from the news service owned by the U.S. Catholic bishops: (202) 541-3250 or tspence@catholicnews.com .
