Mt 26:14-25

One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot,
went to the chief priests and said,
“What are you willing to give me
if I hand him over to you?”
They paid him thirty pieces of silver,
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the disciples approached Jesus and said,
“Where do you want us to prepare
for you to eat the Passover?”
He said,
“Go into the city to a certain man and tell him,
‘The teacher says, “My appointed time draws near;
in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.”’”
The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered,
and prepared the Passover.

When it was evening,
he reclined at table with the Twelve.
And while they were eating, he said,
“Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
Deeply distressed at this,
they began to say to him one after another,
“Surely it is not I, Lord?”
He said in reply,
“He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me
is the one who will betray me.
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply,
“Surely it is not I, Rabbi?”
He answered, “You have said so.”

Farewell to Alleluia and Gloria
During the penitential seasons of the Church, the Gloria and the Alleluia are not said or sung. The Gloria is sung only at the Mass on Holy Thursday, usually with great ceremony, organ and sometimes trumpets, and often with the ringing of bells. After the singing of the Gloria, musical instruments are to be silent until the Alleluia at the Easter Vigil. (Catholic families might imitate this solemn silence by not playing instrumental music in their homes at this time.)

In the Middle Ages and throughout the 16th century, the "burying" of the Alleluia was a solemn ritual on Septuagesima Sunday. A procession of children carrying a wooden plaque bearing the word "Alleluia" laid it at the feet of the statue of the Blessed Virgin, covering it with a purple cloth. It remained there until Easter at the Gospel procession, when the plaque was carried as the priest intoned the three Alleluias before the Easter Gospel. In Paris, a straw figure inscribed with the word was carried out of the choir at the end of the service and burned in the church yard.

Although the practice of literally removing the Alleluia from the Church may have disappeared, even today in some parish celebrations of the Easter Vigil an Alleluia card is carried in procession and placed in front of the altar during the singing of the first Alleluias before the Gospel for Easter.

The hymn Alleluia, Song of Gladness and the one that follows date from the early 9th and 10th centuries; both refer to the farewell to the Alleluia in the liturgy.

This day commemorates the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. Today and during the Sacred Triduum, the Matins and Lauds of the Divine Office are often sung in a haunting service known as the Tenebrae service ("tenebrae" meaning "shadows"), which is basically a funeral service for Jesus. During the Matins on Good Friday, one by one, the candles are extinguished in the Church, leaving the congregation in total darkness, and in a silence that is punctuated by the strepitus meant to evoke the convulsion of nature at the death of Christ. I've also heard it described as the sound of the tomb door closing. During the Triduum, the Matins and Lauds readings come from the following day's readings each night because the hours of Matins and Lauds were pushed back so that the public might better participate during these special three days (i.e., the Matins and Lauds readings heard at Spy Wednesday's tenebrae service are those for Maundy Thursday, the readings for Maundy Thursday's tenebrae service are from Good Friday, and Good Friday's readings are from Holy Saturday's Divine Office).

Third Song of the Servant of the Lord



[4] The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught; that
I may know how to sustain with a word him that is weary. Morning by
morning he wakens, he wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.
[5] The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned
not backward. [6]I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those
who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting.


[7] For the LORD GOD helps me; therefore I have not been confounded;
therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not
be put to shame; [8] he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend
with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come
near me. [9a] Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty?




Commentary:


50:4-9. The second song dealt with the servant’s mission (cf. 49:6);
the third song focuses on the servant himself. The term “servant” as
such does not appear here, and therefore some commentators read the
passage as being a description of a prophet and not part of the songs.
Still, the context (cf. 50:10) does suggest that the protagonist is
the servant. The poem is neatly constructed in three stanzas, each
beginning with the words, “The Lord God” (vv. 4, 5, 7), and it has a
conclusion containing that same wording (v. 9). The first stanza
emphasizes the servant’s docility to the word of God; that is, he is
not depicted as a self-taught teacher with original ideas, but as an
obedient disciple. The second (vv. 5-6) speaks of the suffering that
that docility has brought him, without his uttering a word of
complaint. The third (vv. 7-8) shows how determined the servant is: if
he suffers in silence, it is not out of cowardice but because God
helps him and makes him stronger than his persecutors. The conclusion
(v. 9) is like the verdict of a trial: when all is said and done, the
servant will stand tall, and all his enemies will be struck down.


The evangelists saw the words of this song as finding fulfillment in
Jesus--especially what the song has to say about the suffering and
silent fortitude of the servant. The Gospel of John, for example,
quotes Nicodemus’ acknowledgment of Christ’s wisdom: “Rabbi, we know
that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs
that you do, unless God is with him” (Jn 3:21). But the description of
the servant’s sufferings was the part that most impressed the early
Christians; that part of the song was recalled when they meditated on
the passion of Jesus and how “they spat in his face; and struck him;
and some slapped him” (Mt 26:67) and later how the Roman soldiers
“spat upon him, and took the reed and struck him on the head” (Mt
27:30; cf. also Mk 15:19; Jn 19:3). St Paul refers to v. 9 when
applying to Christ Jesus the role of intercessor on behalf of the
elect in the suit pressed constantly against them by the enemies of
the soul: “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?” (Rom 8:33).


St Jerome sees the servant’s docility as a reference to Christ: “His
self-discipline and wisdom enabled him to communicate to us the
knowledge of the Father. And he was obedient onto death, death on the
cross; he offered his body to the blows they struck, his shoulders to
the lash; and though he was wounded on the chest and on his face, he
did not try to turn away and escape their violence” ("Commentarii In
Isaiam", 50, 4). This passage is used in the liturgy of Palm Sunday
(along with Psalm 22 and St Paul’s hymn in the Letter to the
Philippians 2:6-11), before the reading of our Lord’s passion.

Preparations for the Last Supper


[17] Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to
Jesus, saying, "Where will You have us prepare for You to eat the

him, `The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at
your house with My disciples.'" [19] And the disciples did as Jesus
had directed them, and they prepared for the Passover.


[20] When it was evening, He sat at table with the twelve disciples;
[21] and as they were eating, He said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you
will betray Me." [22] And they were very sorrowful, and began to say
to Him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?" [23] He answered, "He who
has dipped his hand in the dish with Me, will betray Me. [24] The Son
of Man goes as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the
Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he

Commentary:


15. It is disconcerting and sobering to realize that Judas Iscariot
actually went as far as to sell the man whom he had believed to be the
Messiah and who had called him to be one of the Apostles. Thirty
shekels or pieces of silver were the price of a slave (cf. Exodus
21:32), the same value as Judas put on his Master.


17. This unleavened bread, azymes, took the form of loaves which had to
be eaten over a seven-day period, in commemoration of the unleavened
bread which the Israelites had to take with them in their hurry to
leave Egypt (cf. Exodus 12:34). In Jesus' time the Passover supper was
celebrated on the first day of the week of the Unleavened Bread.


18. Although the reference is to an unnamed person, probably our Lord
gave the person's actual name. In any event, from what other
evangelists tell us (Mark 14:13; Luke 22:10), Jesus gave the disciples
enough information to enable them to find the house.


22. Although the glorious events of Easter have yet to occur (which
will teach the Apostles much more about Jesus), their faith has been
steadily fortified and deepened in the course of Jesus' public ministry
(cf. John 2:11; 6:68-69) through their contact with Him and the divine
grace they have been given (cf. Matthew 16:17). At this point they are
quite convinced that our Lord knows their internal attitudes and how
they are going to act: each asks in a concerned way whether he will
prove to be loyal in the time ahead.


24. Jesus is referring to the fact that He will give Himself up freely
to suffering and death. In so doing He would fulfill the Will of God,
as proclaimed centuries before (cf. Psalm 41:10; Isaiah 53:7).
Although our Lord goes to His death voluntarily, this does not reduce
the seriousness of Judas' treachery.


25. This advance indication that Judas is the traitor is not noticed by
the other Apostles (cf. John 13:26-29).

Always be wanting peace with all people, and the holiness without which no one can ever see the Lord. Be careful that no one is deprived of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness should begin to grow and make trouble; this can poison a whole community. And be careful that there is no immorality, or that any of you does not degrade religion like Esau, who sold his birthright for one single meal. As you know, when he wanted to obtain the blessing afterwards, he was rejected and, though he pleaded for it with tears, he was unable to elicit a change of heart.
What you have come to is nothing known to the senses: not a blazing fire, or a gloom turning to total darkness, or a storm; or trumpeting thunder or the great voice speaking which made everyone that heard it beg that no more should be said to them. They were appalled at the order that was given: If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned. The whole scene was so terrible that Moses said: I am afraid, and was trembling with fright. But what you have come to is Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem where the millions of angels have gathered for the festival, with the whole Church in which everyone is a ‘first-born son’ and a citizen of heaven. You have come to God himself, the supreme Judge, and been placed with spirits of the saints who have been made perfect; and to Jesus, the mediator who brings a new covenant and a blood for purification which pleads more insistently than Abel’s. Make sure that you never refuse to listen when he speaks. The people who refused to listen to the warning from a voice on earth could not escape their punishment, and how shall we escape if we turn away from a voice that warns us from heaven? That time his voice made the earth shake, but now he has given us this promise: I shall make the earth shake once more and not only the earth but heaven as well. The words once more show that since the things being shaken are created things, they are going to be changed, so that the unshakeable things will be left. We have been given possession of an unshakeable kingdom. Let us therefore hold on to the grace that we have been given and use it to worship God in the way that he finds acceptable, in reverence and fear. For our God is a consuming fire.

Reading From a treatise on John by Saint Augustine, bishop
The perfection of love
Dear brethren, the Lord has marked out for us the fullness of love that we ought to have for each other. He tells us: No one has greater love than the man who lays down his life for his friends. In these words, the Lord tells us what the perfect love we should have for one another involves. John, the evangelist who recorded them, draws the conclusion in one of his letters: As Christ laid down his life for us, so we too ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. We should indeed love one another as he loved us, he who laid down his life for us.
This is surely what we read in the Proverbs of Solomon: If you sit down to eat at the table of a ruler, observe carefully what is set before you; then stretch out your hand, knowing that you must provide the same kind of meal yourself. What is this ruler’s table if not the one at which we receive the body and blood of him who laid down his life for us? What does it mean to sit at this table if not to approach it with humility? What does it mean to observe carefully what is set before you if not to meditate devoutly on so great a gift? What does it mean to stretch out one’s hand, knowing that one must provide the same kind of meal oneself, if not what I have just said: as Christ laid down his life for us, so we in our turn ought to lay down our lives for our brothers? This is what the apostle Paul said: Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example, that we might follow in his footsteps.
This is what is meant by providing “the same kind of meal”. This is what the blessed martyrs did with such burning love. If we are to give true meaning to our celebration of their memorials, to our approaching the Lord’s table in the very banquet at which they were fed, we must, like them, provide “the same kind of meal”.
At this table of the Lord we do not commemorate the martyrs in the same way as we commemorate others who rest in peace. We do not pray for the martyrs as we pray for those others, rather, they pray for us, that we may follow in his footsteps. They practised the perfect love of which the Lord said there could be none greater. They provided “the same kind of meal” as they had themselves received at the Lord’s table.
This must not be understood as saying that we can be the Lord’s equals by bearing witness to him to the extent of shedding our blood. He had the power of laying down his life; we by contrast cannot choose the length of our lives, and we die even if it is against our will. He, by dying, destroyed death in himself; we are freed from death only in his death. His body did not see corruption; our body will see corruption and only then be clothed through him in incorruption at the end of the world. He needed no help from us in saving us; without him we can do nothing. He gave himself to us as the vine to the branches; apart from him we cannot have life.
Finally, even if brothers die for brothers, yet no martyr by shedding his blood brings forgiveness for the sins of his brothers, as Christ brought forgiveness to us. In this he gave us, not an example to imitate but a reason for rejoicing. Inasmuch, then, as they shed their blood for their brothers, the martyrs provided “the same kind of meal” as they had received at the Lord’s table. Let us then love one another as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us.

Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What will you give me if I deliver him to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him (Mt 26:14-16).

Wednesday is also known as Spy Wednesday because on this day Judas made a bargain with the high priest to turn betray Jesus for 30 silver pieces (Matt 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11; Luke 22:1-6). In Poland, the young people throw an effigy of Judas from the top of a church steeple. Then it is dragged through the village amidst hurling sticks and stones. What remains of the effigy is drowned in nearby stream or pond.

This is also the day that Jesus was anointed with an expensive jar of alabaster by the woman at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper (Matt 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-19).

The Station today is at St. Mary Major for the second time during Lent. As we set our eyes on the Sacred Triduum, it is good to stand in solidarity with our Mother of Sorrows as we contemplate our Redemption.


The Sacrament of Penance and the Easter Duty
One of the duties of a Catholic is to fulfill the six Precepts of the Church, the positive laws which are "meant to guarantee to the faithful the indispensable minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2041). Two of these precepts directly relate to the upcoming Easter season. The third precept is "You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at least during the Easter season." This is tied in with the second precept to "confess your sins at least once a year." If we want to receive Jesus worthily in Holy Communion during the Easter, we need to cleanse our souls, especially of any mortal sin through the Sacrament of Penance. Most parishes offer extra confession times for Holy Week, but usually any priest is available on request to hear confession on appointment.


Meditation
We are healed by His bruises! O heavenly Physician, who takes upon Himself the sufferings of those He comes to cure! But not only was He bruised for our sins; He was also slaughtered as a lamb: and this not merely as a Victim submitting to the inflexible will of His Father who hath laid upon Him the iniquity of us all, but (as the prophet here assures us) because it was His own will. His love for us, as well as His submission to His Father, led Him to the great Sacrifice. Let us not pass over an iota of the devotedness which Jesus shows us—a devotedness which never could have existed save in the heart of a God. Another notoe about "Spy Wednesday:"

**Wednesday is also known as Spy Wednesday because on this day Judas made a bargain with the high priest to turn betray Jesus for 30 silver pieces (Matt 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11; Luke 22:1-6). In Poland, the young people throw an effigy of Judas from the top of a church steeple. Then it is dragged through the village amidst hurling sticks and stones. What remains of the effigy is drowned in nearby stream or pond.**

One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over. On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ´The teacher says, "My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples."´" The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, "Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me." Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, "Surely it is not I, Lord?" He said in reply, "He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born." Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" He answered, "You have said so."

Introductory Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to meditate on the betrayal of Judas.  If one of your disciples, chosen for his greatness of heart, could betray you, then anyone can betray you, especially me. Help me not to be so confident in my own fidelity, but place it in your hands. Help me to be faithful and true.

Petition: Lord Jesus, in spite of my errors, may I experience love and emulate your forgiving way of dealing with Judas.

1. One of You Will Betray Me.  We often think that Judas must have been different, obviously worse than the other disciples. If that were true, everyone would have suspected him when Jesus said, “One of you will betray me.” They would have thought: “It must be Judas. He’s always been bad. He’s capable of betraying Jesus. I don’t know why Jesus picked him.” Instead, Judas did not stand out as any worse than they were. If he did, they would have immediately suspected him.

2. Is It I?  Instead, the apostles are all asking, “Is it I?” Why? Was there some widespread desire to betray him of which they were barely keeping control? No, but they were in a very dangerous situation. The Pharisees had decided to kill Jesus. The apostles know it. That’s why the whole group had gone to stay in Jericho for awhile. Jerusalem was too dangerous. They can imagine themselves following Jesus to the Temple the next day…. Suddenly, someone grabs them, pulls them into an alley, puts a knife to their throat and demands, “Tell me where I can find Jesus tonight!” They wonder what they would say. With my life on the line would I betray Jesus? This is why they ask, “Is it I?”

3. Surely It Is Not I?  Judas had everything he needed to be a great apostle. He had a magnanimous heart, which is why Jesus picked him. God never destines anyone for failure. So what happened to him? At some point he stopped working on his friendship with Jesus. It seems to have been after the discourse on the Bread of Life recorded in John 6. Judas couldn’t accept that he needed to eat Jesus’ body and drink his blood. Jesus must be wrong, and therefore he is a false Messiah. John 6:64 can be taken to mean that this was the first moment that Jesus knew who his betrayer would be. Jesus gives Judas a chance to leave the group and remain an honest man in John 6:67. Instead, he stays, becoming a hypocrite – a “devil” in Jesus’ words – and begins the path that will lead to betrayal.

Dialogue with Christ: Lord, if one of your hand-picked disciples can betray you after having lived with you for three years, seen your miracles and been instructed by you, then anyone can betray you. I have betrayed you so many times: when I don’t want others to know I am your follower, when I listen to attacks on you and your Church without saying anything, even when I do such a simple thing as not saying grace in a restaurant out of fear that others will realize I am a Catholic. May the experience of your Passion and death help me to have the courage of my convictions.

Resolution: Today I will live all the demands of my faith, especially in the moments when they point me out as a follower of Christ. Today I will not betray him, even in the smallest way.

Title:   Who Formed the Face You Are Showing to the World?

Isaiah 50:4-9 / Mt 26:14-25

I have always liked the phrase from Isaiah we have today: “I have set my face like flint” (50:7).

For the first part of my life it seemed like I was so much of an underdog. This verse gave me a great deal of courage, knowing that God was seeing me through and I could dare to set my face against those who would choose to fight me. And I did face some fights, as most young boys do.

After high school, I entered the Army at a time when Vietnam was listed as a very dirty word. This taught me a new way to set my face like flint.

Then, when I went off to seminary, where there was yet another change in the face I had to make. Does this sound familiar to many people?

So many times we put on masks to try to hide ourselves from others, or from ourselves, or even from God. Jesus used no mask in His life.

Indeed, He set His face like flint in a way that no one else ever had, or ever could. And He has passed that ability on to each one of us. When we look at all the masks we place in front of the world, how do we really compare to the One whose face was set like flint?

I don’t imagine my life was that unique in comparison to other people. We have all set a face of some sort before the world. I think the question Isaiah would ask us is: who formed the face you are showing to the world? Is it a face that is designed to protect you? Or is it a face designed to reveal God to the world?

“Your attitude must be that of Christ’s...” (Phil 2:4). Read the entire hymn Paul quotes here.

Through all the messes of this life, there’s only one face we really need: the face of Christ – even if it means enduring some of what He did.

As we approach the days of His Passion, turn your face to His. Allow the Father to conform you to Him. Set your masks aside. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rom 12:2).

Then you will discover what it means to be set like flint. Who knows what sparks may fly to start the fire of the Spirit flowing again in our world? Our masks, our faces cannot do it. Only the face of Jesus can – and we are His face today.

Meditation
Matthew 26:14-25



The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. (Matthew 26:23)

What a cryptic saying! Was Jesus really trying to reveal the identity of his betrayer? Or was he simply suggesting that all the apostles would betray him in some way or another? After all, each of them had dipped his hand into the bowl with Jesus at some point during the meal. It was only as Judas spoke up that he was singled out.

Like the twelve, each of us “dips into the bowl” with Jesus whenever we eat his body and drink his blood. Again, like the twelve, each of us has betrayed the Lord in some way at one time or another in our lives. And the chances are that we’ll do it again. Why? Because it’s part of our fallen nature.

This can sound so depressing, but there is good news: We are also forgiven. Whether we have committed great sins or small ones, it doesn’t matter. The Pharisees—who were trying hard but had become inflexible—needed forgiveness just as much as the prostitutes and tax collectors—who were notorious sinners. And so do we. Whether we have committed murder or are simply harboring a grudge against someone, we all need Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross to set us free.

What hope we can have—not just for ourselves but also for one another! Every one of us who comes to the table is a forgiven sinner. The next time you are at Mass, take a look around at your brothers and sisters in Christ and recognize them as your family. You are all “dipping into the bowl” with Jesus. Thank the Lord that you are also all covered by his mercy and love.

May this realization bring us to unity with each other. Jesus’ greatest desire is that we would all be one as he and the Father are one. Let’s ask him today to teach us to be merciful as he is merciful, so that this deep longing of his might be fulfilled!

Since the apostles ran away at the time of Jesus' crucifixion and those few who stayed would probably not want to talk about the gory details of Jesus' passion and death, the Gospel writers may not have known or did not want to express many of the details of Jesus' sufferings. However, some details of His sufferings have been revealed in prophecy and psalms, especially by Isaiah. When we see a crucifix, we always see the front of Jesus. However, Isaiah reveals the condition of His back in addition to His beard and face. The Messiah says: "I gave My back to those who beat Me, My cheeks to those who plucked My beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting" (Is 50:6).

Jesus' back must have been bruised, almost shredded. Handfuls of hair were pulled out of His bloody beard. His face was beaten almost past recognition as a human being, with spit, blood, and dirt pasted on it, "so marred was His look beyond that of man, and His appearance beyond that of mortals" (Is 52:14). His heart was broken. He "looked for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters" (Ps 69:21) but found none. Rather, they put gall in His food and in His thirst they gave Him vinegar to drink (Ps 69:22). He suffered mercilessly to give us mercy. He suffered because He loves us. These details of His sufferings even more clearly manifest His love for us.

O God, come to my aid.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.
