Saturday of the Fourth Week of Easter

Psalm: Saturday 20

Reading 1
Acts 13:44-52

On the following sabbath
almost the whole city
gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy
and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said.
Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said,
“It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first,
but since you reject it
and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life,
we now turn to the Gentiles.
For so the Lord has commanded us,
I have made you a light to the Gentiles,
that you may be an instrument of salvation
to the ends of the earth.”

The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this
and glorified the word of the Lord.
All who were destined for eternal life came to believe,
and the word of the Lord continued to spread
through the whole region.
The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers
and the leading men of the city,
stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas,
and expelled them from their territory.
So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them
and went to Iconium.
The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

R. (3cd) All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.
R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.
The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.
R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.
R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Gospel
Jn 14:7-14

Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Philip said to Jesus,
“Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father.
And whatever you ask in my name, I will do,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

Here is the email letter that I received on Friday from Ken and Elizabeth Schwab O.C.D.S. -- The Desert Voice Web Masters.

From email@desertvoice.org

Subject:Update

Date:Fri, 12 May 2006 04:32:26 IST

Dear Friends of DesertVoice,

Praised be Jesus Christ!

We would like to notify you of recent changes concerning Father Robert Altier’s situation. It has been just over two months now since Archbishop Flynn requested that Father Altier’s homilies no longer be published on the internet. Throughout this time, we have continued to pray and hope that he would have a change of heart and reverse his request. After allowing some time for the “dust to settle,” we sent a letter (via U.S. mail) to Archbishop Flynn asking him to reconsider. He has not responded and we have now posted our letter on the DesertVoice website.

More notably, the Archbishop has just given Father Altier a new assignment and we have also posted information concerning this on the website. You can check out the newest updates at www.desertvoice.org.

As an approval has already been secured, the possibility does exist of publishing Father’s homilies and catechism lessons in a book format, and a Catholic publisher is considering printing some of the material in the fall of 2006.

This would be a tremendous opportunity for people everywhere to have access to his fine spiritual instruction, and we are hoping this effort will be successful. Once again, we ask God to reward you for your heartfelt support and prayers. "Be assured that we will continue to maintain this website and will not give up".

We are asking everyone to remain constant and vigilant in prayer for Father Altier as he journeys through these dark days. It is not over yet!!!

Recalling the words from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews – Do not surrender your confidence; it will have great reward – let us remain steadfast in prayer that the good which God wants to bring out of all this will soon come forth and A Voice in the Desert will be heard once again. Truly, Father Altier’s example in this trial speaks to us more eloquently than ever before.

DesertVoice webmasters

P.S. Please continue to show your support by visiting www.desertvoice.org daily.

Jn 14:7-14
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
7 If you had known me, you would without doubt have known my Father also: and from henceforth you shall know him. And you have seen him. si cognovissetis me et Patrem meum utique cognovissetis et amodo cognoscitis eum et vidistis eum
8 Philip saith to him: Lord, shew us the Father; and it is enough for us. dicit ei Philippus Domine ostende nobis Patrem et sufficit nobis
9 Jesus saith to him: Have I been so long a time with you and have you not known me? Philip, he that seeth me seeth the Father also. How sayest thou: Shew us the Father? dicit ei Iesus tanto tempore vobiscum sum et non cognovistis me Philippe qui vidit me vidit et Patrem quomodo tu dicis ostende nobis Patrem
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself. But the Father who abideth in me, he doth the works. non credis quia ego in Patre et Pater in me est verba quae ego loquor vobis a me ipso non loquor Pater autem in me manens ipse facit opera
11 Believe you not that I am in the Father and the Father in me? non creditis quia ego in Patre et Pater in me est
12 Otherwise believe for the very works' sake. Amen, amen, I say to you, he that believeth in me, the works that I do, he also shall do: and greater than these shall he do. alioquin propter opera ipsa credite amen amen dico vobis qui credit in me opera quae ego facio et ipse faciet et maiora horum faciet quia ego ad Patrem vado
13 Because I go to the Father: and whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, that will I do: that the Father may be glorified in the Son. et quodcumque petieritis in nomine meo hoc faciam ut glorificetur Pater in Filio
14 If you shall ask me any thing in my name, that I will do. si quid petieritis me in nomine meo hoc faciam

--- Father Altier to be removed from Saint Agnes parish ---

It has been falsely reported that Fr. Altier requested to be transferred to the nursing home. He never made any such request, but is only accepting the reassignment in obedience.

Trust God at all times,
my people! Pour out your hearts to God our refuge!

Vespers 00 Evening Prayer

Vespers (Evening Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 140 (141)
Prayer in time of danger
O Lord, I call on you, hurry to my help: listen to my voice when I call.
When I make my prayer, let it rise like incense before you; when I raise my hands, let it be like the evening sacrifice.

Set a guard on my mouth, Lord, a watch upon my lips.
Do not let my heart turn to evil thoughts, to the planning of wicked deeds,
to alliance with wrongdoers. Let me not share in their delights.
Let the just man strike and rebuke me out of kindness; but sinners shall never anoint me with oil, or I would be an ally in their plans.

When they fall into the hands of harsh judges, they will see how kind my words were.
Like fragments of spoil after digging, their bones will lie scattered round the mouth of the underworld.

To you, Lord, to you my eyes are turned. I take refuge in you – preserve my life.
Protect me from the trap they have laid for me, save me from the snares of the wicked.
Let them be caught in their own nets, all of them, while I pass by in safety.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 141 (142)
You are my refuge
My voice cries out to the Lord; my voice cries out its entreaty.
I pour out lamentation in his sight, I proclaim my troubles before him.

When my spirit is failing within me, still, Lord, you know my paths.
On the road I was travelling, they set up a trap for me.
I looked about me and saw there was no-one beside me to help.
I have nowhere to flee; and no-one will miss me.

I have cried to you Lord, I have said: “you are my refuge, my share in the land of the living.
Listen to my call for help, for I am crushed down”.

“Lead my spirit from prison, so that I may praise your name.
The upright will gather around me, because you have restored me”.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Philippians 2
Christ, God's servant
Jesus Christ, although he shared God’s nature, did not try to seize equality with God for himself; but emptied himself, took on the form of a slave, and became like a man – not in appearance only, for he humbled himself by accepting death – even death on a cross.
For this, God has raised him high, and given him the name that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bend, in heaven, on earth, and under the earth,
and every tongue will proclaim “Jesus Christ is Lord”, to the glory of God the Father.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
A short Bible reading and responsory may follow here.
Canticle Magnificat
My soul rejoices in the Lord
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation.
For he has shown me such favour –
 me, his lowly handmaiden.
Now all generations will call me blessed,
because the mighty one has done great things for me.
His name is holy,
his mercy lasts for generation after generation
 for those who revere him.

He has put forth his strength:
he has scattered the proud and conceited,
 torn princes from their thrones;
 but lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions ?
Christ is our resurrection and our life. Let us faithfully call on him, crying:
son of the living God, look after your people.
We pray to you, Christ, for your catholic Church:
make her holy and establish your kingdom among the nations.
We pray to you for those oppressed by sickness, grief, servitude and exile:
may they receive help and consolation.
We pray for those who wander far from your paths:
let them have the grace of forgiveness, the joy of life renewed.
Our Saviour, you were crucified, you rose from the dead, you will come to judge the world:
look kindly on us sinners.
We pray to you for all who live in this world,
and who all who have left us, hoping in the resurrection.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.
A concluding prayer may follow here.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.
A M E N

Meditation
Acts 13:44-52

What tremendous opposition Paul and the other apostles faced—they preached to people who not only saw them as radical weirdos but who actually wanted to kill them! Though you and I probably will never face that degree of hostility, don’t we sometimes find ourselves in situations where it’s uncomfortable to be witnesses for Christ? Maybe we get intimidated because someone expresses a contrary opinion, or an argument erupts over what exactly the “true” gospel is. The apostles’ example can help us here. They never allowed opposition to get them down. Rather, they “shook the dust off their feet” and moved ahead (Acts 13:51), trusting God for better things.

We can also learn from what the apostles did not do. First, they did not condemn their opponents, but left judgment to God. No doubt, they knew that being judgmental would only be an obstacle to evangelism. And perhaps, having experienced God’s mercy for themselves, they knew that it might eventually prevail even in situations where their own labors had produced no obvious results. We should have such hearts of mercy, too. After all, God doesn’t want anyone to perish but keeps working to reach them.

Second, the apostles never took it personally when people rejected their message about Jesus. Do we? There’s no reason to feel personally rejected. These people’s problem is with God, not with us! Besides, our dignity comes from God and not from how successful we have been in converting people to the faith. So if lack of success at evangelizing ever makes you feel worthless and rejected, examine your focus. Are you seeking your own glory or God’s?

One final lesson: We can be sure that the apostles prayed for everyone they evangelized. Let’s do the same. Our God is faithful, so let’s never lose hope in the seeds he has led us to plant. Though you may never see the results of your words or acts of kindness, they may have set something stirring deep in someone’s heart. Who knows? Maybe something else will come along to water that seed, so that it will spring up and grow and produce the fruit that will last.

“Lord Jesus, have your way in the hearts of all those I meet today. Fill them with such love for you that all their objections fall away.”

Psalm 98:1-4; John 14:7-14

Jesus said: "If you really knew Me..." —John 14:7

In the early Church, there were two followers of Jesus named Philip. One was an apostle (Lk 6:14), the other among the first deacons (Acts 6:5).

Philip the apostle knew all about Jesus, but didn't know Jesus. Jesus said to Philip, "After I have been with you all this time, you still do not know Me?" (Jn 14:9) Philip the apostle saw Jesus work many signs and wonders, but these did not lead Philip to believe Jesus was in the Father (Jn 14:7-8). Jesus commanded him: "Believe because of the works I do" (Jn 14:11). Jesus promised Philip that he would do works greater by far than Jesus (Jn 14:12). Philip, however, didn't believe Him. Later, Philip came to know Jesus personally and believe in Him. Yet before Pentecost Philip had no such relationship.

We meet Philip the deacon after Pentecost. He knew Jesus personally. In Samaria, he performed works greater by far than Jesus. "There were many who had unclean spirits, which came out shrieking loudly. Many others were paralytics or cripples, and these were cured. The rejoicing in that town rose to fever pitch" (Acts 8:7-8). Philip the deacon was led by the Spirit to convert the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:35ff), thereby being Jesus' witness "even to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Although Philip the apostle touched, saw, embraced, and worked with Jesus, he did not know Him. Philip the deacon may have never seen Jesus in his physical presence, but he had a deep, personal relationship with Jesus. "Blest are they who have not seen and have believed" (Jn 20:29).

Prayer: Risen Jesus, "the greatest thing in all my life is loving You."
Promise: "The disciples could not but be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit." —Acts 13:52
Praise: Our Lady of Fatima gave a message to the world through three young children. Many conversions have occurred as a result.

Compline -- Night Prayer

Compline (Night Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 4
Thanksgiving
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
When I called out, he heard me, the God of my righteousness.
When I was in trouble, you gave me freedom:
now, take pity on me and listen to my prayer.

Sons of men, how long will your hearts be heavy?
Why do you seek for vain things?
Why do you run after illusions?
Know that the Lord has done marvellous things
 for those he has chosen.
When I call upon the Lord, he will hear me.

Be vigorous, but do not sin:
speak in the silence of your heart,
in your bed, be at rest.
Offer righteousness as a sacrifice,
and put your trust in the Lord.

Many are saying, Who will give us good things?
Let your face shine on us, Lord,
let the light of your face be a sign.
You have given me a greater joy
 than the others receive
from abundance of wheat and of wine.
In peace shall I sleep, Lord, in peace shall I rest:
firm in the hope you have given me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Psalm 133 (134)
Evening prayer in the Temple
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
Come, bless the Lord,
all you servants of the Lord
who stand through the night in the house of the Lord!
Lift up your arms to the sanctuary
 and bless the Lord!

May the Lord bless you from Sion –
the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Reading Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one God. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your strength.
These words that I teach you today will remain in your hearts. You will teach them to your children; you will speak them as you sit at home and as you go on your journeys; you will speak them when you lie down and when you rise up.

Short Responsory ?
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit, alleluia, alleluia.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit, alleluia, alleluia.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness, alleluia, alleluia.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit, alleluia, alleluia.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit, alleluia, alleluia.

Canticle Nunc Dimittis
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
 You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia.

Prayer
Let us pray.
Come to us, Lord, this night, and give us the strength to rise at dawn rejoicing in the resurrection of your Anointed, who lives and reigns for ever and ever, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
A M E N
Final Antiphon
Queen of Heaven, be joyful,
 Alleluia.
You who were worthy to bear him.
 Alleluia.
He has risen, as he promised.
 Alleluia.
Pray for us to God.
 Alleluia.
