THE WATER OF CANA IS TURNED INTO BLOOD By His Eminence Metropolitan PHILIP Primate, Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America July 31, 2006

Cana (modern spelling is Qana) is a little village in South Lebanon which was blessed by the presence of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, his Holy Mother and his disciples. Cana is the Village where Christ performed his first miracle by changing the water into wine at the marriage feast. (John 2: 1-11). Thus, Cana is deeply rooted in our Christian history.

Unfortunately, in modern times and due to the conflict between Israel and Arab nations, including Lebanon, Cana has been the victim of Israeli aggression twice: once in April 1996, when an Israeli rocket killed 105 Lebanese men, women and children. And second, on Sunday morning, July 30, 2006, when an Israeli rocket killed 60 people, including 37 children. This indiscriminate killing is against the Geneva Convention, the United Nations Charter and all laws of civilized nations.

This savage war is between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanon has no air force, no navy and no large military force. As a matter of fact, the Lebanese army is not involved in this war at all. This war, then, is between Israel and Hezbollah. Why is Israel bombing Lebanese cities, villages, bridges, roads and killing innocent men, women and children in the south and north, east and west of Lebanon? According to UN statistics, more than 800 civilians have been killed, many of them children, and more then 800,000 Lebanese have been made refugees in their own country. Israel knows very well where Hezbollah is. Why doesnt Israel fight Hezbollah on its own turf? Why is Israel bombing civilian cars, motorcycles and pickup trucks carrying food for hungry people and medical supplies for the wounded? Lebanon is a poor country; the devastated infrastructure will cost billions of dollars to rebuild.

We deplore the killing and destruction on both sides. We know that Hezbollah has some weapons which are causing some unfortunate killing and destruction in Israel. But Hezbollah does not have American weapons such as F-16s, F-15s, Apaches and smart bombs, etc

When I saw the Lebanese Red Cross retrieving the tender dead bodies of little children from underneath the rubble and I looked at their innocent faces and iconic eyes, I wept. I was indeed ashamed to see the extent of the cruelty and barbarism of our world. This morning, when the Lebanese Broadcasting Company showed pictures of the city of Bint-Jbeil which was completely leveled by the Israeli air force, I was reminded of the destruction of Stalingrad and Berlin during the Second World War. We and the whole world, with the exception of the United States, Great Britain, and Israel, are calling for an immediate cease fire. If we allow the law of the jungle to prevail, and if we allow our moral principles to be trodden on by barbarian feet, what will be left of our civilization?

The behavior of Mr. Ehud Olmert in this war reminds me of the behavior of his ancestor of old, Joshua, recorded in the Book of Joshua 6:21. And they (Joshuas army) destroyed all that was in the city (Jericho) both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep and ass with the edge of the sword. Thanks to Mr. Olmert, nothing is left in Bint-Jbeil except some starving dogs feeding on corpses.

I told her that Israel has fought a sanitized war, and that they forewarn the Lebanese when and where they will strike, and that the Lebanese allowed Hezbollah to build villages on top of their weapons sites, knowing that Israel would strike them, and that they could then cry bloody murder. Any other comments???

Well, if you were a Dem, you could "embrace multiculturalism" and behead them.

But I'm afraid I don't have anything useful to contribute.

The killings at Qana (28 killed, not 60) seem highly suspect, especially given the macabre "parade of corpses" that seemed to take place on that Sunday morning.

Others more knowledgeable will bring you up to speed, but your friend has swallowed the media portrayal of this incident whole.

There is a lot of opinion that this is not Cana, of the first miracle. See Wikipedia entry for Cana.

By the way, most scholars locate Cana of New Testament near Nazareth, in Israel, not with the Cana in Lebanon.

And second, on Sunday morning, July 30, 2006, when an Israeli rocket killed 60 people, including 37 children.

This body count has been refuted by even anti-Israeli sources (Human Rights Watch).

The reality of the situation is that Hezzbollah chooses to wage war from civilian areas in order to push up the civilian casualties and force an early end to fighting.

If the Israeli military refused to target Hezzbollah for this reason then the terrorists would be able to fire from these "havens" with impunity.

Israel's right to self defense cannot be argued and Israel must try to stop the rocket attacks on their people.

First I would establish whether you are discussing how wars are or should be fought, or are you only being forced to defend the fact that Jews are presently engaged in war.

Is this guy just using this to attack the Jewish action or is he truly interested in the barbarity of war.

People will use a lot of different paths to keep making their true bottom line attack.

One thing: No lies or is it "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

The so called civilian deaths that the press and the Islamic terrorist are espousing, in my humble opinion, are just lies or they are false witness against Israel.

So you should ask why she is worried about the so called civilians who (may not be civilians)or are put in harms way by the Islamic terrorist and not the civilians in Israel who are deliberately targeted by the Islamic terrorist and have been blown up for the past several years by homicide bombers and rockets.

Israel will return it to its pristine 2 millennium old roots, a featureless landscape, removing all the 'modern' buildings that have since cluttered the holy spot.

Cana is not in South Lebanon, It is in North Israel, a couple of hill's walk from Nazareth, where Christ lived with his family. They walked to that wedding that day, you know. Undoubtedly Cana has been struck by rockets but fired by hezbollah. Many of the residents of Cana are Israeli arabs. I have been there and have a bottle of "Cana wedding wine" (at least the arab who sold it to me assured me it was :-)

So the first thing I would do for your friend is to educate him on geography. Then, history.

So because Cana is mentioned in the Bible that somehow absolves the modern residence of their crimes of harboring and aiding terrorists?

Joel 3:

18 In that day
the mountains will drip with sweet wine,
and the hills will flow with milk.
All the streams of Judah will flow with water,
and a spring will issue from the Lord's house,
watering the Valley of Acacias. 19 Egypt will become desolate,
and Edom a desert wasteland,
because of the violence [done] to the people of Judah
in whose land they shed innocent blood. 20 But Judah will be inhabited forever,
and Jerusalem from generation to generation. 21 I will pardon their bloodguilt,
[which] I have not pardoned,
for the Lord dwells in Zion.

Why did you welcome Hezbollah to your roads, your bridges, your cities and villages. Your friendship has cost you all of those things! I ask you.....why do you blame Israel for what you have done to your cities, villages, bridges, roads, innocent men, women and children in the south and north, east and west.

Any Lebanese Christian would be well familiar with the atrocities perpetrated on them in the past by their own mulism residents and would probably not carry this tone. I am surprised by it. Lebanon used to be a Christian country till the muslims started moving in with their multiple wives and out bred them.

Tell her not to bother you for help when the muzzies are about to slit her throat. If she is really Christian, she should know you don't make deals with the Devil, and expect to survive.
Cowardice is no excuse!
