EWTN Concludes 25th-Anniversary Celebration

Aug. 14 (CWNews.com) - More than 5,000 people attended a weekend celebration in Birmingham, Alabama on August 12-13 as the Eternal Word TV Network (EWTN) marked its 25th anniversary.

Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving on Sunday, and familiar hosts from the EWTN broadcast line-up hosted sessions in a Birmingham convention center, during the celebration. But the most famous figure associated with EWTN-- the founder, Mother Angelica-- was missing because of ill health.

Mother Angelica, who founded the broadcast giant in 1981 and won over millions of viewers with her homespun spiritual insights, has been sidelined by a severe stroke. Mother Mary Catherine, who now heads the community of the Poor Clare Nuns of Perpetual Adoration, told participants in the anniversary celebration that Mother Angelica is "tired. She stays in her room most of the time."

Nevertheless EWTN remains dedicated to the founder's vision, Mother Mary Catherine said. "People need to know what the Vatican is saying, what the Pope is teaching," she said. "EWTN straightens that confusion out." EWTN today is the world's largest religious broadcasting network, transmitting programming 24 hours a day to more than 105 million homes in 110 countries.

He really needs to get Cardinal Trujillo straightened out about that mish-mash of Latin and English and all that excessive formality.

I didn't see it either but if they followed their usual form, which disturbs Fr. Larson, they said all the common prayers in Latin so all those viewers in those 110 countries could "actively" participate.
