Reading 1
2 Thes 3:6-10, 16-18

We instruct you, brothers and sisters,
in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
to shun any brother
who walks in a disorderly way
and not according to the tradition they received from us.
For you know how one must imitate us.
For we did not act in a disorderly way among you,
nor did we eat food received free from anyone.
On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and day we worked,
so as not to burden any of you.
Not that we do not have the right.
Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you,
so that you might imitate us.
In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that
if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.

May the Lord of peace himself
give you peace at all times and in every way.
The Lord be with all of you.

You build the tombs of the prophets
and adorn the memorials of the righteous,
and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors,
we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’
Thus you bear witness against yourselves
that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets;

The Immaculate Heart [of Mary]

August Devotion: The Immaculate Heart

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person: and as the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue.

This devotion has received new emphasis in this century from the visions given to Lucy Dos Santos, oldest of the visionaries of Fatima, in her convent in Tuy, in Spain, in 1925 and 1926. In the visions Our Lady asked for the practice of the Five First Saturdays to help make amends for the offenses given to her heart by the blasphemies and ingratitude of men. The practice parallels the devotion of the Nine First Fridays in honor of the Sacred Heart.

On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII made a solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart. Let us remember this devotion year-round, but particularly through the month of August.

INVOCATIONS

O heart most pure of the Blessed Virgin Mary, obtain for me from Jesus a pure and humble heart.

Sweet heart of Mary, be my salvation.

ACT OF CONSECRATION
Queen of the most holy Rosary, help of Christians, refuge of the human race, victorious in all the battles of God, we prostrate ourselves in supplication before thy throne, in the sure hope of obtaining mercy and of receiving grace and timely aid in our present calamities, not through any merits of our own, on which we do not rely, but only through the immense goodness of thy mother's heart. In thee and in thy Immaculate Heart, at this grave hour of human history, do we put our trust; to thee we consecrate ourselves, not only with all of Holy Church, which is the mystical body of thy Son Jesus, and which is suffering in so many of her members, being subjected to manifold tribulations and persecutions, but also with the whole world, torn by discords, agitated with hatred, the victim of its own iniquities. Be thou moved by the sight of such material and moral degradation, such sorrows, such anguish, so many tormented souls in danger of eternal loss! Do thou, O Mother of mercy, obtain for us from God a Christ-like reconciliation of the nations, as well as those graces which can convert the souls of men in an instant, those graces which prepare the way and make certain the long desired coming of peace on earth. O Queen of peace, pray for us, and grant peace unto the world in the truth, the justice, and the charity of Christ.

Above all, give us peace in our hearts, so that the kingdom of God may spread its borders in the tranquillity of order. Accord thy protection to unbelievers and to all those who lie within the shadow of death; cause the Sun of Truth to rise upon them; may they be enabled to join with us in repeating before the Savior of the world: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will."

Give peace to the nations that are separated from us by error or discord, and in a special manner to those peoples who profess a singular devotion toward thee; bring them back to Christ's one fold, under the one true Shepherd. Obtain full freedom for the holy Church of God; defend her from her enemies; check the ever-increasing torrent of immorality; arouse in the faithful a love of purity, a practical Christian life, and an apostolic zeal, so that the multitude of those who serve God may increase in merit and in number.

Finally, even as the Church and all mankind were once consecrated to the Heart of thy Son Jesus, because He was for all those who put their hope in Him an inexhaustible source of victory and salvation, so in like manner do we consecrate ourselves forever to thee also and to thy Immaculate Heart, O Mother of us and Queen of the world; may thy love and patronage hasten the day when the kingdom of God shall be victorious and all the nations, at peace with God .and with one another, shall call thee blessed and intone with thee, from the rising of the sun to its going down, the everlasting "Magnificat" of glory, of love, of gratitude to the Heart of Jesus, in which alone we can find truth, life, and peace. — Pope Pius XII

IN HONOR OF THE IMMACULATE HEART
O heart of Mary, mother of God, and our mother; heart most worthy of love, in which the adorable Trinity is ever well-pleased, worthy of the veneration and love of all the angels and of all men; heart most like to the Heart of Jesus, of which thou art the perfect image; heart, full of goodness, ever compassionate toward our miseries; deign to melt our icy hearts and grant that they may be wholly changed into the likeness of the Heart of Jesus, our divine Savior. Pour into them the love of thy virtues, enkindle in them that divine fire with which thou thyself dost ever burn. In thee let Holy Church find a safe shelter; protect her and be her dearest refuge, her tower of strength, impregnable against every assault of her enemies. Avoiding Idleness. Earning One's Living



[6] Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not
in accord with the tradition that you received from us. [7] For you
yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we
were with you, [8] we did not eat any one's bread without paying, but
with toil and labor we worked night and day, that might not burden any
of you. [9] It was not because we have not that right, but to give you
in our conduct an example to imitate. [10] For even when we were with
you, we gave you this command: If any one will not work, let him not
eat. [11] For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere
busy bodies, not doing any work. [12] Now such persons we command and
exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work in quietness and to
earn their own living.


Prayer and Farewell Wishes


[16] Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in
all ways. The Lord be with you all.




Commentary:


6. St. Paul wants to prevent the misconduct of some Christians
spreading to others; and at the same time he wants to help the
transgressors to turn back--which they may do if they are made to feel
isolated. Excessive tolerance of irregular behavior does nothing to
encourage reform and only helps the spread of permissiveness.


That was the Apostle's usual policy: "I wrote to you in my letter not
to associate with immoral men; not at all meaning the immoral of this
world, or the greedy and robbers, or idolaters, since then you would
need to go out of the world. But rather I wrote to you not to
associate with any one who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of
immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or robber"
(1 Cor 5:10-11).


7-12. Some of the Thessalonians, wrongly thinking that the Parousia was
about to happen, had given up working and were living in idleness,
minding everyone's business but their own. So the Apostle reminds them
all that when he was among them he worked to keep himself and was a
burden on no one.


The Second Vatican Council underlines the value of work when it exhorts
"Christians, as citizens of both cities, to perform their duties
faithfully in the spirit of the Gospel." Far from neglecting earthly
responsibilities, they should, as the Council goes on, realize that by
their faith they "are bound all the more to fulfill these
responsibilities according to the vocation of each one (cf. 2 Thess
3:6-13; Eph 4:28)" ("Gaudium Et Spes", 43).


"For the love of God, for the love of souls, and to live up to our
Christian vocation, we must give good example. So as not to give
scandal, or to provoke even the faintest suspicion that the children of
God are soft and useless, so as not to disedify..., you must strive to
show an example of balanced justice, to behave properly as responsible
people. The farmer who ploughs his field while constantly raising his
heart to God, just as much as the carpenter, the blacksmith, the office
worker, the academic--all Christians in fact--have to be an example for
their colleagues at work, and to be humble about it. Therefore,
everyone, in his job, in whatever place he has in society, must feel
obliged to make his work God's work, sowing everywhere the peace and
joy of the Lord" ([St] J. Escriva, "Friends of God", 70).


16. "The Lord of peace", or "the God of peace", is a title found in a
number of St. Paul's letters (cf. Rom 15:33; 2 Cor 13:11; Phil 4:9; 1
Thess 5;23), because Redemption, by wiping out sin, establishes
people's friendship with God and with one another. The wish expressed
by the Apostle here echoes the greeting Christians normal used with one
another, a greeting our Lord himself recommended: "Whatever house you
enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house' (Lk 10:5). The Jews used
and continue to use the same greeting--"Shalom" (=peace). When a
Christian greets someone in this way it should be a sincere _expression
of his love of God and love of others and not just mere polite
well-wishing, hoping people will "enjoy themselves".


Referring to empty, selfish peace of that sort, our Lord said that he
had come to bring not peace but a sword (cf. Mt 10:34). He also warned
us that the peace he gives is not peace of the type the world gives
(cf. Jn 14:27), but a peace which comes from the Holy Spirit (cf. Gal
5:22) and which "passes all understanding" (Phil 4:7). "It is useless
to call for exterior calm if there is no calm in men's consciences, in
the center of their souls" ([St] J. Escriva, "Christ Is Passing By", 73).


We should therefore always be "eager to maintain the unity of the
Spirit in the bond of peace" (Eph 4;3). If we are, we will be builders
of peace and will receive the reward Christ promised when he
proclaimed, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons
of God" (Mt 5:9). In this connection John Paul II has said, "Peace is
work we have to do; it calls for commitment and solidarity with one
another. But it is also (inseparably and above all) something in God's
gift: we need to pray for it" ("Address", 8 December 1978).

Jesus Indicts the Scribes and Pharisees (Continuation)



(Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees,) [27] "Woe to you, scribes
and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like white-washed tombs, which
outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men's
bones and all uncleanness. [28] So you also outwardly appear righteous
to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.


[29] "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the
tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, [30]
saying, `If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have
taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' [31] Thus
you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered
the prophets. [32] Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers."




Commentary:


27-28. The Jews used to whitewash tombs annually, shortly before the
feast of the Passover. The whitewash made the tombs more visible and
helped to avoid people brushing against them, which would have meant
incurring legal uncleanness for seven days (Numbers 19:16; Luke
11:44).


In the sunlight, these tombs sparkled radiantly white, but inside they
held corruption.


29-32. Our Lord shows them that they are cut off from the same cloth
as their ancestors--not because they erect mausoleums in honor of
prophets and just men but because they are guilty of the same sin as
those who killed the prophets. Hence their hypocrisy, which makes them
even worse than their fathers. With pained irony Jesus tells them that
they are compounding the sins of their ancestors.


Clearly this is referring to His passion and death: if the ancients
killed the prophets, by causing Him to suffer and die our Lord's
contemporaries will still be more cruel.

We gave you a rule when we were with you: do not let anyone have any food if he refuses to do any work. May the Lord of peace himself give you peace all the time and in every way. The Lord be with you all.

You who build the sepulchres of the prophets and decorate the tombs of holy men, saying, “We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in our fathers’ day”. So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the sons of those who murdered the prophets! Very well then, finish off the work that your fathers began.’

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. Before the reform of the General Roman Calendar today was the feast of St. Rose of Lima, now celebrated on August 23 and Sts. Felix and Adauctus, two Roman martyrs under the Diocletian persecution. They are buried in the cemetery of Commodilla at the gates of Rome on the Ostian Way. St. Fiacre, who is in the Roman Martyrology, is from the diocese of Meaux and is the patron saint of gardeners.


Sts. Felix and Adauctus
In the year 304 Felix was living piously and happily, doing the work of a Christian priest in Rome, when he was captured, along with many other Christians at the start of the persecutions under the Emperor Diocletian. First he was savagely tortured. Then he was sentenced to be beheaded, for no torture sufficed to make him give up his Christian beliefs.

Felix was led to the place of execution. So noble and apparently unconcerned did he seem at the prospect of imminent death that one of the crowd who had so far kept secret his own Christianity, shouted out: 'I too follow and believe the same commandments that this man confesses. I too follow and believe in the same Jesus Christ. And I too will give away my life to further his cause.'

The Roman soldiers rushed to seize the man, and he too was beheaded alongside Saint Felix. Unfortunately no-one even gathered his name. He was therefore dubbed 'Adauctus', which simply means 'the additional one'.

Both martyrs were reverently buried in the cemetery of Commodilla on the Ostian Way. By the time the list of martyrs known as the Depositio Martyrum was compiled in the year 354, they were simply known as 'Felix and Adauctus'.

About thirty years later Pope Damasus ordered that their tomb be restored and he put an inscription over it.

St. Fiacre
St. Fiacre (also known as Fiachra; Fiachrach; Fiacrius; Fiaker and Fevre) was a hermit at Kilfiachra, Ireland. He left to go to France, and then lived as a solitary at Breuil, Brie, on land given him by St. Faro, bishop of Meaux. Fiacre built a hospice for travelers, attracted many disciples, was known for his charity and aid to the poor, and was consulted by many for his spiritual wisdom. His miracles of healing became legendary. He is the patron saint of gardeners and the cabdrivers of Paris, whose vehicles are called fiacres, since the first coach for hire in Paris was located near the Hotel Saint-Fiacre. He is mentioned in Roman Martyrology for this day.

Jesus said, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men´s bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, ´If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets´ blood.´ Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out!"

Introductory Prayer: Lord Jesus, I believe that you are the “Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). I come before you humbly today. I want my life to be an open book where you write the pages of my life story.

Petition: Lord Jesus, grant me a sincere and humble heart that leads me to resist all hypocrisy and live my Catholic faith in its fullness.

1. What You See Is Not What You Get!  One of the sternest reprimands Jesus gave was against the hypocrisy of those charged with the grave task of leading God’s people. They were called to transmit the hope of God’s promise of deliverance: “I will be your God and you shall be my people” (Jeremiah 24:7). Yet their vain righteousness was nothing but self-indulgence that burdened the flock of Israel to the point of despair. Instead of helping the people of God to turn from sin to a life of fidelity to God’s love, they preyed upon the spiritual sensitivity of the people for their own sordid gain.

2. Guillotine of Saints or Saints to the Guillotine?  Human respect is the “guillotine of saints.” It has a suicidal effect and a deadly capacity to cut short the action of a zealous heart. Human respect renders love of God and souls sterile because it is nothing but pride disguised as fear, doubt or the sophism of not wanting to hurt others’ feelings. True charity, on the other hand, gives testimony to the truth, regardless of the consequences this may bring – even persecution or the sword (cf. Romans 8:35). Shunning human respect may lead us to the “guillotine” of ridicule or persecution, but then we are on our way to becoming saints.

3. Like Father, Like Son, Hypocrites All.  The Pharisees’ ancestors killed the prophets for chastising the people in God’s name. Now, Jesus ironically urges the Pharisees to prove themselves worthy of their heritage. Jesus separated himself from the religious leaders of the times. Unlike the Pharisees and Temple priests, who had become like mercenaries for the flock of Israel, Jesus was the Good Shepherd. Jesus instituted a new priesthood, based on his own: that of the Suffering Servant, the Paschal Lamb, the Messiah, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. He made all things new and in truth set us free from sin.

Dialogue with Christ: Oh Jesus, I thank you with all my heart for redeeming me. You let me hear your voice gently calling me. I will be forever grateful to you because of your cross, on which you proved your love for me. Strengthen me in faith and fill me with your love so that I can one day join with St Paul to say, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).

Resolution: I will be an enemy of hypocrisy and sincere in my dealings with all the people around me today.

There’s an old saying to the effect that people will know us by the friends we keep. There’s solid insight in that, on several levels. The most obvious is the likelihood of our choosing companions who share our more important views and attitudes towards life. But there’s another dynamic at work as well. With the passing of time, even the most wary of us tend to take on the ideas, values, and even the mannerisms of the people with whom we spend our days. We don’t necessarily think about it or decide to do it, it just happens. And sometimes what we take into ourselves from them is not all that admirable.

That’s why St. Paul is so outspoken in his advice to us about friends: “Avoid any brother who wanders from the straight path and does not follow the tradition you receive from us,” he says. Paul knew how fast that we can slide into spiritual sickness without even noticing it.

But we can’t stop with just avoiding trouble. There’s more to be done about people who’ve moved in wrong directions. Pray for them, but don’t preach. Search for opportunities to talk with them about the things that matter. And when you do, speak from the heart and listen from the heart. Live your values. Let your life offer a different vision that speaks louder than any words. They may not admit it, but they’ll notice. And in the end, if nothing seems to work, leave it to God. More often than not, only time will bring people to a readiness to rethink. So be patient, and leave it to God.

2 Thessalonians 3:6-10,16-18



 Keep away from believers who are living in idleness. (2 Thessalonians 3:6)

Idleness is a constant temptation to our human nature. Hitting the snooze button one more time, skipping or shortening our prayer, sitting back and letting others wait on us, not noticing what needs to be done, being content with a shoddy job, finishing what we prefer to do rather than being on time for a commitment, saying no to another’s pressing need—we all face temptations like this every day.

When we examine our consciences at the end of the day, it is easy to congratulate ourselves for avoiding overt sins. Perhaps I haven’t lied, stolen, cheated, or insulted anyone. But what have I “failed to do,” in the words of the Penitential Rite? On what commitments have I slacked off? What opportunities did the Lord offer me to advance his kingdom? In what distressing disguises did he make me aware of his needs? How did his Spirit nudge me to speak a word of correction or encouragement, to go out of my way to perform a random act of kindness and love?

We sometimes feel overwhelmed by all God gives us to do. We lose sight of the fact that he is at work within us to accomplish his will (Philippians 2:13). When all is said and done, it is his Holy Spirit who inspires us, energizes us, and makes our labors fruitful. And that’s good news, because the Spirit is not a slave driver but a yokefellow and friend. Sometimes he enables us to discern when to say no, and other times he impels us to undertake the impossible. But whatever he does in us, he never leaves us.

“Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways! You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you” (Psalm 128:1-2). It’s not the most spectacular promise, but it is quite encouraging. When we take up the calling God has given us—however mundane it may seem—we find satisfaction. And what’s more, if we make this the pattern of our lives, we will find joy as well.

“Lord, you know my weaknesses, but you have called me to be your disciple, sharing the work of your kingdom. By your Spirit, energize me to say yes to your call.”

HOLY IS AS HOLY LOVES
 
"Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you frauds!" —Matthew 23:27
 

The scribes and Pharisees thought they excelled in holiness. They fasted and tithed (Lk 11:42). They dedicated themselves to reading Scripture. They had zeal for God's house. However, they neglected "the love of God" (Lk 11:42).

This means two things. First, the scribes and Pharisees were concerned about God's words and His house (temple) but placed a lower priority on His love. They found it more important to concentrate on other parts of their religion rather than on God's command to love their neighbor (Lv 19:18). To neglect the love of God is to neglect God. In fact, "the man without love has known nothing of God, for God is love" (1 Jn 4:8).

Second, and most important, by neglecting the love of God the scribes and Pharisees neglected to personally love God. The first and most important commandment is to love God before all else (Dt 6:5). They served God but neglected to love Him.

How about you? Is there anything today more important in your life than loving God? How much priority did you place on loving God yesterday? Life is full of distractions, responsibilities, and problems which demand our time and attention. In addition, Satan attempts to prevent us from taking time to love God. Yet those who have fallen in love always manage to find plenty of time to spend with their beloved. If we want to love God, then we have chosen the best part, and we shall not be deprived of loving Him (Lk 10:42). Love God.

 
Prayer: Father, nothing can separate me from loving You (Rm 8:39) except my own choice. I devote myself to love You always.
Promise: "Happy are you who fear the Lord." —Ps 128:1
Praise: When feeling distanced from God, Maureen goes back to the basics and remembers her First Love (cf Rv 2:4).
