9/11 in Perspective: Thomas More A Man for This Season |
|
09/11/06 |
In 1929, G.K. Chesterton said, Blessed Thomas More is more important at this moment than at any moment since his death, even perhaps the great moment of his dying; but he is not quite so important as he will be in about 100 years time. |

**In our own day, we have witnessed a resurgence of secularism that reflects, at best, a sneering tolerance of those who still aspire to Christian ideals. That grudging tolerance is increasingly giving way to a legally enforced hostility to religion that has no room for traditional morality.**
I think most of the posters on the Religion Forum are aware of this. Could everyone please ping their lists?

I just assumed abortions were not done in Catholic Hospitals.
Is this common?
I can't even imagine this happening.
Esp. with the availablity of this via Planned Parenthood.
Ping my list to what - this??? No thank you.
Current events are leading me to wonder if we are entering into another period of virulent anti-Catholicism, such as Thomas More experienced in England during the Protestant revolt of the early 16th century. Thomas More was martyred in large part for opposing Henry VIII's attack on the authority of the pope and the sanctity of marriage.....Saint Thomas More knew all too well that true devotion to the Eucharist, the rosary, and the Cross itself, are indispensable weapons in the spiritual battles that confront all devout Catholics seeking to live their faith in an increasingly secular world.
Bttt! St. Thomas is one cool dude, even if he couldn't play golf.
I thought that the deterioration of respect for Catholics as well as Christians was worth a public discussion. I would have thought you would have agreed to fight the secularists.
Your answer makes me wonder if you are truly opposed to secularism.
Still wondering? Get to know me better.
I think I know you pretty well, and I just don't see you supporting secularism at all. That is why your answer surprised me.
The article talks about Christians as well as Catholics. But I acknowledge your right to disagree is this instance. Thank you.
I don't think I had wrong thoughts about you, because I know you are very staunch in your beliefs and I respect that. I just disagree with them at times.

However, there has been HUGE legal pressure on Catholic hospitals, both in the USA and worldwide, to either do abortions or go out of business. For instance, in Canada, IIRC, the govt. ruled that any hospital licensed to offer obstetric or gynecological services has to do abortions and tubal ligations. The Catholic hospitals refused to do so, so Catholic hospitals are no longer licensed to do childbirth or women's health services in Canada.
Similarly int he USA there have been a whole lot of mergers where Catholic hospitals merged with non-Catholic ones. Pro-abort organizations pushed for banning such mergers if they would result in a loss of abortion "services": in other words, they can either not merge, or if they merge they all have to do abortions.
In some cases, the Catholic hospital boards (no longer under the control of the religiousorders that dounded them) have voted to drop their Catholic identity in the mergers. Thus, hospitals that most people assume are still Catholic, are doing abortions.
It's literally a hell of a situation. Like the Catholic adoption services in Boston (who were told that in order to retain their license they had to provide adoptive children for gay couples) the hospitals are told: violate the moral teachings of the Church, or face extinction.
Thanks for taking the time in explaining that.
