Most consider the readings at church on Sunday a kind of Bible study.
They are a kind of Bible study. Passages from the Bible are read, and then a learned member of the community explains the meaning and applies the lessons of the readings to the real life of thost present.

That is not a STUDY that is a TEACHING that requires nothing more of the hearers than to swallow what is taught whole and without thinking or discernment.

Go to a protestant service. People take off their coats as an indication they intend to stay and pay some attention . See them sit with the bibles open to the passages to see if they are being taught in context and quoted correctly.
To study means to concentrate on, investigate, discuss and look at other scriptures to see if it is correctly being applied.

That Bible is God talking to you.
Is that the only way God talks to us? Is Bible study the primary and greatest way to experience God?

It is the Primary and greatest way to test all teachings and doctrines. It is the place where God has chosen to reveal Himself to men, it is where you learn about Gods character and attributes. It is His love letter to men , it is hard to believe that men love a god they do not know and have no interest in knowing.

It is like having a mail order bride as opposed to an enduring relationship that flowers into love .

If a man is looking for an "experience" or a one night stand then serious work on the relationship is a non essential.

Jhn 17:17 — Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Jhn 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

The Holy Spirit sanctifies us by the word

1Pe 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

When you were a student being taught, it required no thought on your part?

You have an interseting way of looking at things.

Go to a protestant service. People take off their coats as an indication they intend to stay and pay some attention .

I take off my coat every Sunday. Some older people feel more cold. This is a ridiculous thing to judge upon.

You can't think with a coat on? Please.

I see. You think the Bible is the Word of God.

Jesus is the Word of God. It's a common misconception.

This is a common difference I think in Protestant and Catholic - what "going to Sunday Church" is.

Protestant "Church" is more of a lecture/study group. Catholics have the Eucharist, Mass. There are Bible study groups, catechism study, etc. on other days in other places for Catholics.

It's two different basic reasons and ideas about "Sunday Worship Services."

This I think also relates to Scott H.'s conversion. I believe others have said that it was primarily about the Eucharist.

So this is true of every Protestant?

By contrast with Catholics: That is not a STUDY that is a TEACHING that requires nothing more of the hearers than to swallow what is taught whole and without thinking or discernment.

So we Catholics across the board have no faculties of discernment or understanding because we just sit and listen?

Therefore, we must be mind-numbed robots. How do you know what goes on in the mind and heart of every Catholic?

"That is not a STUDY that is a TEACHING that requires nothing more of the hearers than to swallow what is taught whole and without thinking or discernment."

And that's how ALL Christians "learned the Bible" until Gutenberg invented printing. Seems to have worked pretty well for centuries.

Only possible "post Gutenberg".
