PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, FEB. 25, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Cardinal Justin Rigali is reaching out to new audiences this Lent by posting weekly Gospel commentaries on the video sharing Web site YouTube.

The archbishop of Philadelphia posted his first two-and-a-half-minute video on Ash Wednesday.

In the video entitled "Living Lent: The First Sunday," the 71-year-old cardinal explains the benefits of fasting, comments on Sunday's Gospel and then urges his listeners to join a Bible study group.

Donna Farrell, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Cardinal Rigali "knew nothing of YouTube" until his staff proposed he try it.

"He said: 'Anything we can do to reach people where they are.' He has
repeatedly said to us: 'We're in the business of evangelization. Let's
be out there. Let's be everywhere,'" Farrell told the daily paper.

The spokeswoman said the cardinal plans to continue posting messages throughout Lent.

At the time of publication, the video had been viewed more than 4,500 times.

'We're in the business of evangelization. Let's be out there. Let's be everywhere,'"

Great idea.

Cardinal Rigali is the Real Deal.

He preached the sermon at our local Red Mass. Discombobulated both the local St. Thomas More Society AND quite a number of the visiting judges (state and federal) by preaching uncompromisingly against abortion. He did not mince words.

A lot of the judges were offended because it was billed as an "ecumenical" service. But as I said at the time, if you go to a Baptist service you expect preaching on the Blood and the necessity for a personal conversion . . . so what do you expect from a Catholic?

Good on the Cardinal for his outreach efforts. I wish him well.

I found this on the Archdiocese of Atlanta's Web site. He also gave a sermon at a Red Mass in his own cathedral.

Yep, that's it! With my own ears I heard it. When he got to the part about the duty to protect life, the judges shuddered like a sea anemone.
