Rome, July 6, 2007 The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called the Vatican's inclusion of a prayer for the conversion of Jews in the Latin Mass "a theological setback in the religious life of Catholics and a body blow to Catholic-Jewish relations, after 40 years of progress between the Church and the Jewish people."
A papal order allowing the use of the 16th Century Tridentine Mass (Latin Mass) includes the prayer used in the Good Friday liturgy from the 1962 Missal, "For the conversion of the Jews. Let us pray also for the Jews that the Lord our God may take the veil from their hearts and that they also may acknowledge our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, You do not refuse Your mercy even to the Jews; hear the prayers which we offer for the blindness of that people so that they may acknowledge the light of Your truth, which is Christ, and be delivered from their darkness."
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, in Rome for meetings with Vatican officials, issued the following statement:
We are extremely disappointed and deeply offended that nearly 40 years after the Vatican rightly removed insulting anti-Jewish language from the Good Friday Mass, that it would now permit Catholics to utter such hurtful and insulting words by praying for Jews to be converted. This is a theological setback in the religious life of Catholics and a body blow to Catholic-Jewish relations. It is the wrong decision at the wrong time.ADL noted that in 1959, Pope John XXIII removed the term "perfidious Jews" from the controversial Good Friday Latin Mass. In the 1970 Missal of Paul VI, which is currently used, the prayer for the conversion of Jews was replaced by a positive prayer recognizing the Jews' eternal covenant with God, a principle to which Pope John Paul II was deeply committed. It appears the Vatican has chosen to satisfy a right-wing faction in the Church that rejects change and reconciliation.
HAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!!Abe Foxman shows his anti-Catholicsm again! What an ass. What’;s he AFRAID of???
Who's "we", Abe? You leftist, thin-skinned, perpetually-offended schmucks in the ADL? Memo to Foxman: Most of us Jews don't care a whit about the (innocuous) prayer in question.
So converting the Jews is not anti-Jewish, but complaining about Catholic attempts to convert the Jews is anti-Catholic?
Whatever the we is, it appears to be an authority on theological setbacks...
.
If a BILLION Jews prayed that I would turn from Catholicsm to Judaism, I wouldn’t care.....why should you unless you think your religion doesn’t have all the answers.
Thank you for understanding, Mr. Mojo.
Hey Abe, I don’t tell you what to pray for. Butt out.
Judaism has survived for thousands of years longer than Christianity & it has done so without trying to covert anyone. It is not just a faith, but a people.
why should you unless you think your religion doesnt have all the answers.
Add insult to injury.
You are happy in your religion....I am happy in my faith.
We Christians decided to get on the "Jesus is the Messiah Bus"......you Jews are still waiting at the Bus Stop....it's YOUR perogative.
I’m not Jewish.
OK.
While you’ll be hard pressed to find a bigger admirer of Judaism than myself, the ADL is going to just to have to get over it. Christians are directed to preach the Gospel to people outside the faith. We’re told to evangelize. Its what we do. Jews (and everyone else) should realize this and live with it. If you’re not interested in converting, fine, say so. But never tell us not to try to spread the Gospel. Muslims pray for and call for our conversion all the time. That doesn’t offend me (it only offends me when it’s ‘convert or die’).
If you truly believe your statement here, what would be the point in the prayers?
No they don't. While I disagree with their reaction, I wouldn't presume to tell them what they must do. The ADL isn't demanding Catholics stop. Instead, they are voicing their own reaction. What if I told you to get over their reaction?
Christians are directed to preach the Gospel to people outside the faith. Were told to evangelize. Its what we do.
Cept, we're not talking about preaching the Gospel here.
But never tell us not to try to spread the Gospel.
They're not, least not here.
Muslims pray for and call for our conversion all the time. That doesnt offend me (it only offends me when its convert or die).
Yes & I agree, though I might also be offended if I voiced concern about the practice & they told me I'd just have to "get over it".
re-read.
Done & the question remains.
