I enjoy the Harry Potter series, and have no problem with my children reading the books. Without throwing out a spoiler, I can tell you that the struggle between good and evil is an important element in the book, and that redemption and forgiveness are also huge components in this last book. My children have not become satanists after reading Harry Potter, if anything events in the books have sparked some interesting conversations around the house that include God and Our Savior.

Amen, voiceinthewind.

So many who have not read these books have been so quick to condemn. After reading them, you’d have to lack reading comp skills not to see the extremely strong thread of faith (in Rowling’s case, Church of Scotland) that runs through the Harry Potter books.

SPOILER ALERT: Love how one of the keys to destroying a Horcrux in Book 7 is being sorry that you have divided your soul and being sorry for your wrongdoing (or, as we would say, “Being sorry for your sins.”)

I’ve been in one too many Harry Potter arguments on this board, so I’ll just say...those of you who haven’t read them, consider that the same kind of cartoony witchcraft that appears in Harry Potter appears in Cinderella, so if you’re keeping kids from the Potter books, better lock up old Cindy and that despicable Wiccan, the Fairy Godmother. /sarc

I say God bless JK Rowling for making children read 800 page books in the internet age and for writing books with as strong and clear a positive moral underpinning as the Potter books. And please, God, make our priests, bishops and yes, even our Pope, READ these books before they start talking evil and witchcraft, because it just makes them look silly.

I’m all for being redemptive re evil hazards and influences.

I’m also wholesale fairly fierce about avoiding unnecessary spiritual hazards and the series has plenty of such hazards from the symbols, themes, values, attraction of a NONHOLY SPIRIT SUPERNATURAL realm . . . etc.
