The Tridentine Mass, the Latin-only rite both loved and hated by many Catholics for its medieval qualities, is roaring back into use after a July 7 papal decree loosened the rules on celebrating it.
Two traditional priestly societies dedicated to the rite report that priests from all over the country are signing up in droves for weeklong classes to learn the rituals and language of the Mass, named after the 16th-century Council of Trent.
Monsignor Michael Schmitz, vicar-general of the Florence, Italy-based Institute of Christ the King, said he has received hundreds of calls from interested clergy.
"This is a nationwide phenomenon," he said. "Many more parish priests and younger priests are interested in learning to celebrate the Latin Mass.

Your list again, please (I know you must be working double time today — seems to be a lot!). ;-)
“Whenever the Latin rite is celebrated, you get many young people,” he added. “They are looking for something that speaks to the soul, and the beauty of the liturgy is awe-inspiring. The heartfelt presence of God really affects them.”
“It’s more reverent, more transcendent,” Father McAfee said.
Catholic ping!
The Angelus Press email a few days ago said the SSPX district office got 25 requests in ONE DAY last week from priests wanting to learn the Traditional Mass. They also reported 20 priests in one east coast diocese are learning the Mass and their bishop is planning a group of Tridentine parishes. Any idea which diocese that is?
Quote from the article:
“Monsignor Michael Schmitz, vicar-general of the Florence, Italy-based Institute of Christ the King, said he has received hundreds of calls from interested clergy.”
And people told me it wouldn’t happen!
I think we can safely rule out Boston.
Frank, where was that website that was preordering reprints of the Missal? I have a copy that's very tattered and torn -- and another copy of a "dialogue Mass" but that's a little outdated.
Wonderful news!
That’s what I thought, lol.
I don't know what to say.
Things aren't much better here is CA. The bishops have been very quiet but privately they are sending out negative vibes. I was told the situation is VERY political.
should read “here in CA”
I saw somewhere another bishop spouting the "it's not meant for this country" line (as if it came from the MP or the cover letter!) -- seems most likely he picked it up from Cardinal O'Malley, who was off and running before the MP cooled off from the presses! Maybe I should email Fr. Z and suggest he add it to what he's calling "the party line"!

Check the site from Monk in #16. It is Baronius Press although there are some others. I like the nice binding of Baronius’ books. It must be pre-ordered.
Mother, check the New Liturgical Movement. There was some nice music stuff posted a week or so back. One post was the entire volume of something musical so the file had to be huge.

Fr. Z has been doing a good job keeping track of the U.S. Bishop's reactions. One of the scariest I've seen is the letter out of Steubenville where the Bishop wants names of laity requesting and attending the Traditional Masses.
Thank you!
