A Course In Miracles

Sounds like B. Hussein Obama's hope/change plan for America, who BTW is endorsed by Oprah.

I didn’t quite realize that the ACTUAL MANIFESTATION of end of world prophecies was going to hit me in the face tonight when I opened this thread.

Watch out for Oprah and Obambo to tag team this!

I have family members immersed in this self-indulgent drivel. Interestingly, they are the least successful in their work and relationships, yet go to a “church” that promotes this ideology. They believe that their affirmations and visualization and whatnot is going to miraculously bring success where hard work and planning fails. And this “church” will charge $300-400 for a weekend workshop in “spirituality.”

Some of us in the family have tried to get them to consider other ideas, but it’s almost impossible to discuss. They are very defensive and closed-minded. I have read all the books mentioned that came out in the 90’s and before, so I feel I am entitled to discuss the ideas. I do see the appeal of this stuff to someone with low self-esteem.

I’m tempted to email this article, but reason does not seem to apply. It’s discouraging, but I guess my best recourse is to pray for them.

From EWTN (regarding this topic):

The text of the book "A Course in Miracles" is the product of seven years of trance spirit channeling of a Mrs. Helen Schucman. The spirit that channeled a "new gospel" to Mrs. Schucman claimed to be Jesus Christ. The "spirit" made contact with her to correct errors in Sacred Scripture, and the teachings of the Church.

-snip-

Mrs. Schucman, a Columbia University professor and psychologist, was an acquaintance of Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R. (seen on EWTN). Fr. Groeschel gave a eulogy at her funeral. Fr. Groeschel wrote (2), "This woman who had written so eloquently that suffering really did not exist spent the last two years of her life in the blackest psychotic depression I have ever witnessed." Fr. Groeschel is a holy, practical, wise, no nonsense priest, and psychologist. During an October 1994 lecture on "Discernment" given at Holy Cross Church, Rumson, N.J., Fr. Groeschel stated that he believed that Helen Shucman's experience with the channeled "spirit" was possibly a true diabolic manifestation.

-snip-

Fr. Groeschel is not easily inclined to attribute any experience to the diabolic. The possible diabolic origin in the spirit channeling of Helen Schucman was one exception given by Fr. Groeschel. Fr. Groeschel's suspicions find support in Sacred Scripture. Helen Schucman's "channeled spirit" denies that our Lord Jesus Christ came to the earth in the flesh. An abstract of "the Course" can be written based solely on two lines of the "spirit" channeled writings.

Has this woman no fear of God! Seriously where did this ignoramus get the arrogance to believe that it is her mission to overcome 2,000 years of church teaching. She is so caught up in herself that she does not fear at all that she might be distributing falsehood.

WHen I used to preach it used to weigh so heavily on me to get things right and in line with scripture that I would be pacing the floor for a week before I was due to speak - going over everything in my mind, praying and asking God’s help and my words were lucky to reach a hundred people.

I cannot get over the ego of this woman!

What Oprah and this ilk are doing is this:

II Peter 2

False Prophets and Their Punishment

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive opinions. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2Even so, many will follow their licentious ways, and because of these teachers* the way of truth will be maligned. 3And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

4 For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell* and committed them to chains* of deepest darkness to be kept until the judgement; 5and if he did not spare the ancient world, even though he saved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood on a world of the ungodly; 6and if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction* and made them an example of what is coming to the ungodly;* 7and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man greatly distressed by the licentiousness of the lawless 8(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by their lawless deeds that he saw and heard), 9then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgement 10—especially those who indulge their flesh in depraved lust, and who despise authority.

Bold and wilful, they are not afraid to slander the glorious ones,* 11whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not bring against them a slanderous judgement from the Lord.* 12These people, however, are like irrational animals, mere creatures of instinct, born to be caught and killed. They slander what they do not understand, and when those creatures are destroyed,* they also will be destroyed, 13suffering* the penalty for doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, revelling in their dissipation* while they feast with you. 14They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! 15They have left the straight road and have gone astray, following the road of Balaam son of Bosor,* who loved the wages of doing wrong, 16but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

17 These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm; for them the deepest darkness has been reserved. 18For they speak bombastic nonsense, and with licentious desires of the flesh they entice people who have just* escaped from those who live in error. 19They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption; for people are slaves to whatever masters them. 20For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment that was passed on to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb,
‘The dog turns back to its own vomit’,
and,‘The sow is washed only to wallow in the mud.’

That is the sign of a healthy conscience, as freeper Darth Vader pointed out in quoting 2 Peter 2. The priest or minister knows that one day they will stand before God and be held accountable for leading or misleading others from the Truth. Oprah is not an ordained minister. With little or no theological training, one must wonder at how she arrives at her decisions, other than 'from the heart'. Women are, by nature, nurturers. Most of what I have read in this New Age approach is precisely the type of message that appeals to women and/or impressionable youth. Perhaps, if enough ordained ministers/priests write to her, she can be persuaded to drop this nonsense.

We have all witnessed the many generous and magnanimous deeds performed by Oprah. But the evil one thrives on promoting power and Oprah, like all of us, is a sinner at heart and susceptible to his advances. Pray for her!

“And you shall be like God.” Satan

Beware. I remember this book. I bought it once long time ago, unaware. I read some of it. I threw it out when I found the “there is no sin.” Even though I was a pretty new Christian at the time, I knew it was very dangerous and threw it away. Thank you, Jesus.

But it is no surprise that Satan has continued his same old lie. Nothing new under the sun.

“Pray for her”

I with you on that and stand in agreement on Oprah. The New Age movement is also called “The Emerging Church” or “Seeker Sensitive Church” which emphasizes self-esteem and feel-goodism. Much like the nonsense that has permeated our education system, gone away from the basics and dummied it down. Evangelicals and charismatics have done some excellent apologetic work on this movement. We Christians who strive to do right by the Gospel need to pray for one another and support each another, as we are in this fight together. I Corinthians 1 speaks powerfully to the Church today.

Without the Magisterium, it’s every one for himself. By what authority can anyone say her perspective is wrong (or anyone else’s for that matter!) Surely, not Benedict XVI!
Thank God, Martin Luther got the ball rolling for personal interpretation.

A guy I work with told me his thesis in college (and this was easily 15 years ago) was that Oprah’s following was a cult/religion...I kind of laughed when he first started saying his rationale and by the time he was done explaining it in 5 short minutes I was completely convinced he was correct and look at what we see now...he was a visionary that’s for sure...

What scares me is that anyone who dare disagree with her or not subscribe to her way of thought is anhiliated so the beast could well be behind her...

I am not one for conspiracy theories but I believe the false prophet will come on subtle at first being the friend of all man and appear caring. I doubt that Okra is it but she has the money, power, and audience to make that leap.

I agree with you. This “Course in Miracles” is full of New Age crap. I believe in miracles, and God can work miracles. But Satan works miracles, too. He tries to imitate what God does.

Another thing I don’t like about that course is that it puts too much emphasis on self, and none on Jesus. The course talks about “my holiness” enveloping something. The Bible says that our “holiness” or “righteousness” is as filthy rags (Isa. 64:6). The Bible also condemns those who seek to establish their own righteousness (Rom. 10:3).
