HOSANNA (Palm) SUNDAY - Shanini Sunday
March 16, 2008

Posted on 03/15/2008 4:28:51 PM PDT by NYer

MAZMOORO (Psalm of the Readings)

The one who rides the clouds, today rides a donkey.
He whom heaven and earth bless,
is blessed today by the mouths of children.

The stone rejected by the builders has become the corrnerstone
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Glory to you who gave up the chariot of the cherubim
to ride on a poor donkey.

This Sunday takes its name from the joyful shouts of the children of Israel as Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem in triumph, crying out “Hosanna”, which means, “Save us now, we pray!” They also shouted out: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Jesus was thus greeted as the Savior of Israel, the Messiah and Lord.

The procession with the palms and olive branches that takes place on this day, originated in Jerusalem as a commemoration of Christ’s triumphant entrance into the Holy City. By the fourth century the Church in Jerusalem gathered each year to recall the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem. The faithful gathered on the Mount of Olives with their bishop. There they sang psalms and hymns and listened to readings from the Old Testament and to the gospel account of the Lord’s entry into the city. Late in the afternoon they went in procession from the Mount of Olives to the city of Jerusalem. The parents carried their children on their shoulders and all waved branches of palm and olive trees as they cried out: “Hosanna!” and “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Upon entering the city they wen to the Church of the Resurrection which was built over the tomb of the Lord, where they ultimately celebrated the eucharist.

As we prepare for the great week of the Lord’s passion and death, we begin by recalling that Jesus was first rightly greeted by the crowds as their Messiah. These same crowds that today cried “Hosanna,” would later shout, “Crucify him.” However, the Lord’s disciples, who today rejoiced over the reception that he received from the crowds, would desert him and hide in fear. And yet Jesus remained Messiah evn on the cross for his true glory came not at the hands of the people, but from his Father. As we follow the Lord on the way to the cross, may we remain ever faithful to him who is our Savior and Lord.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Zechariah
Chapter 9

9
5 Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, Meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass.
10
6 He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; The warrior's bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11
7 As for you, for the blood of your covenant with me, I will bring forth your prisoners from the dungeon.
12
8 In the return to the fortress of the waiting prisoners, This very day, I will return you double for your exile.
13
For I will bend Judah as my bow, I will arm myself with Ephraim; I will arouse your sons, O Zion, (against your sons, O Yavan,) and I will use you as a warrior's sword.
14
The LORD shall appear over them, and his arrow shall shoot forth as lightning; The LORD God shall sound the trumpet, and come in a storm from the south.
15
The LORD of hosts shall be a shield over them, they shall overcome sling stones and trample them underfoot; They shall drink blood like wine, till they are filled with it like libation bowls, like the corners of the altar.
16
And the LORD, their God, shall save them on that day, his people, like a flock. For they are the jewels in a crown raised aloft over his land.
17
For what wealth is theirs, and what beauty! grain that makes the youths flourish, and new wine, the maidens!

Matthew
Chapter 21
1
1 When they drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage 2 on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,
2
saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. 3 Untie them and bring them here to me.
3
And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, 'The master has need of them.' Then he will send them at once."
4
4 This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled:
5
"Say to daughter Zion, 'Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.'"
6
The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them.
7
5 They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them.
8
6 The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road.
9
The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: "Hosanna 7 to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest."
10
And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken 8 and asked, "Who is this?"
11
And the crowds replied, "This is Jesus the prophet, 9 from Nazareth in Galilee."

On Hosanna Sunday, the Maronite Churches are packed. Young children are dressed in their Easter clothes and carry pillar candles decorated with the symbols of the season. After distribution of the palms, Abouna (the pastor) leads the congregation in a procession out the doors of the Church and around the parking lot, then returning to the Church. It is truly a joyous occasion! Some of our families are intermarried with the Orthodox. They all come, Maronite and Orthodox to celebrate this beautiful and joyous day!

A Blessed Shanini Sunday to all of you!

I’m looking for Roman Catholics to comment on something I found very odd.

Yesterday’s mass during the reading of the Gospel stated the Jesus Christ was hung between two “revolutionaries”...WHat is THAT all about?

It was in the seasonal missalette. Since when did the two men change from thieves to revolutionaries?

I’m going to post this on other threads with Catholic themes to see if it was just my parish or if others noticed it.
