NEW YORK - New York Cardinal Edward Egan says Rudy Giuliani should not have received Holy Communion during the pope's visit because he supports abortion rights.
Egan says he had "an understanding" with the former presidential candidate and New York mayor that he is not to receive the Eucharist. The Catholic Church teaches "that abortion is a grave offense against the will of God."
The cardinal says Giuliani broke that understanding when he received the Eucharist during Pope Benedict XVI's visit.
Egan says he will be seeking a meeting with Giuliani "to insist that he abide by our understanding."
Giuliani's spokeswoman, Sunny Mindel, said Monday that he is willing to meet with the cardinal but added that his faith "is a deeply personal matter."
Egan's statement does not address the fact that Giuliani is on his third marriage.

Why should a sinner care about committing another sin? It is a serious sin to take Holy Communion knowingly in the state of mortal sin. We are not talking about one sin committed a long time ago. We are talking about a continuation of sins, such as his continued support of abortion, and living in sin with a 3rd woman you call your wife. His soul and where he spends eternity is of little concern to him.
He cannot possibly believe that he can support abortion and be on his third marriage and still go up to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord in such a state of public and unrepentant mortal sin and scandal.
So, if he doesn't believe, why does he bother to go to church in the first place?
If he does it for political advantage, he's heaping sin on sin, not as a Catholic but as a Christian or even as a believer in God at all. "God is not mocked."
I guess this is what they mean in the old criminal indictments by saying, "Having not the fear of God before his eyes, but being moved and seduced by the instigations of the devil . . . . "

Actually, as I recall....Kennedy stayed behind in his pew. But...it showed kerry and teresa in line. I didn’t see Pelosi but the reports were that she received.
I don’t think the diocese makes a difference. To me it would be up to ANY of them to chide ANY Catholic over that.
They should ALL be shepherds. That’s the problem. MY parish, MY diocese. It’s supposed to be one holy Catholic and Apostolic church. Why should one person be chided by HIS Shepherd while others are not. Same old thing.
It’s amazing...simply amazing. And...I am a cradle Catholie born, bred and will die a Catholic. However, the church leaves a lot to be desired. One parish says this and another parish says that. We’re supposed to be ONE.
Well if the RC Church doesn’t have the back bone to excommunicate him/them then they might as well receive communion

No arguement from me...I’m just happy to see any bishop or Cardinal stand up for the teaching of the Church.
Exactly. I agree. They should all be together. Makes ya wonder when only one calls someone out like Egan did Rudy.
That puzzled me, too. Maybe he was really touched by the Pope and had a mad urge to get his life together. Egan did say he wants to meet with him, so maybe Rudy will get some counseling to straighten up his act. That, after all, is what we want; not the death of the sinner, but that he repent. This could be Rudy's big chance!
The significant thing is that Egan called him out on the public sin, that is, his political support for abortion. The marriage situation is obviously a problem, but that’s certainly not the greatest scandal or harm that Giuliani is causing. It actually surprised me, because Egan has not been very outspoken on abortion until fairly recently.
This really frosts me. What about the priest that gave communion to Giuliani, the public adulterer???
How in the world would any priest in NY not KNOW that this man is living in mortal sin by divorcing and remarrying, and is therefore unqualified to receive Communion!???
The problem has not been with the Church. The problem I’m familiar with has been with America and our priests and bishops and our “sense of compassion” and “tolerance” toward all. Some, not all, priests have been influenced unduly by this problem. “Tough Love” is difficult, and priests (bishops,pastors,etc) are human, also, and have a desire to be liked. At times, that desire leads to a failure to condemn the sin in a sinner, and to demand proper actions thereafter. I believe Egan is one of the best now. I hope this public statement does not get “swept under the rug”.
The Church is one, but really, you should know that those who are not of the Diocese of New York must properly be prevailed upon by their bishops, not by Cardinal Egan. Speak of them, and pressure them instead. Perhaps the Vatican is in the process of calling the bishops on the carpet, too, with regard to this. However, if they have not been warned by their bishops in the past, we may not hear anything specific and public about other politicians from those bishops.
Sounds like Egan has grounds to commence a ferendae sententiae excommunication of Giuliani.

Egan musta got major lip from Catholic New Yorkers disgusted at Rudy's audacity and arrogance. Fact is, Egan's been forced into lashing out at Rudy.
He dumped his wife at a presser without telling her, tried to dump his kids out in the streets and move his mistress is----forced taxpayers to pay for the whore's upkeep (government fraud).......it goes on and on.
The abortion worshipper contributed to Planned Parenthood and was honored by NARAL-----he can't act like he's a Catholic in good standing whenever he feels like it.
Giuliani should go back to his preferred house of worship-----"The Church of Whatever Works For Me. "

It has been over a week since that Mass, what prompted Cardinal Egan to speak now??
Perhaps B16 had a chat with the Cardinal.
