PARIS (AP) A Roman Catholic bishop said Sunday that the church has officially recognized that the Virgin Mary appeared to a 17th-century shepherd girl in the French Alps.
Speaking at Mass in remarks broadcast nationally on France-2 television, Monsignor Jean-Michel di Falco Leandri said he recognized the "supernatural origin" of the apparitions to 17-year-old Benoite Rencurel from 1664 to 1718.

I will point out to those who expect any pope to magically transform the whole Church in the space of a few years that it took the Vatican 290+ years to fully evaluate this appearance.
How did they know it was her?
Mary is our heavenly mother and she has visited with some frequency at Lourdes, Fatima, Beaurang, LaSalette, and many other places. She is our mom.
Photo ID?
AND the photo ID also showed that she wasn’t a Democrat. This significantly sped up the affirmation process.
And please, let me point out that NO ONE is required to believe in any apparition.
I am a Catholic and doubt some as well.

Hehehe. Well stated. I’ll try to behave.
When the Church approves a Marian apparition after a thorough investigation, it simply declares that the apparition in question is “worthy of belief” but passes no official judgement as to its involving the Blessed Virgin. In addition, the Church does not require Catholics to believe in the apparitions even if approved.
How do they know which Mary it was?
Generally, Mary will identify herself as the blessed mother in some form or another.
Agreed in every particular.
Aren’t most/all of these sightings of a European-looking Mary? If so, it’s a tip-off they weren’t the real deal.
“Arent most/all of these sightings of a European-looking Mary? If so, its a tip-off they werent the real deal.”
She appeared to a European. When she appeared in Mexico as Our Lady of Guadalupe, she was dark, with dark hair and garbed in robes whose colors were significant to the Indians. The black sash around her waist indicates pregnancy and was common in that culture.
We aren’t required to believe in appartions. We aren’t required to believe prophecies that are pronounced, but we are also taught not to dispise them either.
I am not willing to say God or God’s messengers did or did not speak directly to someone, especially if that message is in line with repentence, return to God, and prayer.
I believe it is up to the local Bishop or Archbishop to determine if there is a valid apparation. And even then it remains a matter of private devotion and not public revealation. The Bishop simply determines that there is nothing contrary to the Catholic faith in such a devotion and that the apparation can not be explained by natural means.
I want to add in every recoginized apparation our Blessed Mother always brings the message for us to repent and to return to Christ. She encourages prayer and the Christian virtues of faith, hope and charity.
As in her earthly life she always points to her Son our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her mission is to urge us to reconcile with Christ and avoid that Day of Wrath.
By the same token, when the Virgin Mary appears in a certain place, she addresses the seer in the local language or dialect. For example, Our Lady of Guadalupe spoke to Juan Diego in the Aztec language Nahuatl, while Our Lady of Lourdes spoke to Bernadette Soubirous in the local French Patois.
By the same token, I believe that Satan can do the same thing.
That is why the Church conducts an exhaustive investigation of an apparition to ensure it is not a hellish deception.
They have Rosetta Stone® in heaven??!!
How’d they know it was Mary and not Diana of the Ephesians?
JMO, but I don’t see Satan appearing as Mary to encourage devotion to God.
The net effect seems to be an increase in devotion to Mary.
the devil can do many things....he can convince Martin luther, calvin, Wesley et al that they should leave the true church.....he can convince Mohammed (sp) that he had received amessage from God’ probably from Lucifer rather than a real angel.....all in all, once Jesus had established His religion on earth, (Catholocism) what’s the point of trying to improve on it?????
I can only answer that the way Curly from the Three Stooges would:
“Oh, a wise guy!”
No matter when or where an apparition is, Mary’s message on behalf of her Divine Son is basically the one she uttered at the wedding feast in Cana: “Do whatever He tells you.”
It's all a bit hokey. All one needs to do is read the Bible to get the same message. And if apparitions were really important, why doesn't Jesus just appear Himself? After all, He did just that to the apostle Paul.
Some peasant girl gets her 15 minutes of fame the RC church has a new income source and control mechanism for the masses.
As for the part about not despising prophecies, I don’t despise true prophecies, which are the kind that Paul referred to in I Thess. 5:20, where he said, “Despise not prophesyings.” However, I do despise false prophecies, which the Bible condemns numerous times. The so-called “Marian apparitions” are in the category of false prophecies. God doesn’t speak through Mary. He speaks by Jesus and the Holy Spirit through prayer, the Bible, circumstances, and the church.
I agree with you. We don’t need apparitions to find God’s will for us. He tells us in His Word, the Bible.
That’s your interpretation.
It isn’t mine. Be at peace.
When did Jesus appear to Paul? On the road to Damascus, Paul was struck off his horse and he heard the voice of Jesus, but didn't see Him.
Looks like somebody needs to read their Bible :^)
14 And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.' 15 So I said, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 16 But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. 17 I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.' (Acts 26)Im only going by Pauls own account of Jesus Words.
Looks like somebody needs to read their Bible :^)
BTW, I dont think there was a horse involved in the account. It simply says that Saul fell to the ground.
Glad to help.
