Orthodox Jewish youths burn New Testaments in Or Yehuda
Associated Press ^ | 05-20-08 | The Associated Press

Orthodox Jews set fire to hundreds of copies of the New Testament in the latest act of violence against Christian missionaries in the Holy Land. Or Yehuda Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon said missionaries recently entered a neighborhood in the predominantly religious town of 34,000 in central Israel, distributing hundreds of New Testaments and missionary material. After receiving complaints, Aharon said, he got into a loudspeaker car last Thursday and drove through the neighborhood, urging people to turn over the material to Jewish religious students who went door to door to collect it. "The books were dumped into a pile and set afire in a lot near a synagogue," he said. The newspaper Maariv reported Tuesday that hundreds of yeshiva students took part in the book-burning. But Aharon told The Associated Press that only a few students were present, and that he was not there when the books were torched. "Not all of the New Testaments that were collected were burned, but hundreds were," he said.

What a surprise -- a liberal rag exaggerating to suit their agenda.

Wait a sec.
If they were given these New Testament books, they are free to do with them what they want, right?

They didn’t burn the missionaries, they burnt the books.

And isn’t there a rule about forced evangilizing in the very orthodox areas of Israel?
Maybe I’m wrong, can you help Alouette?

But they shouldn't give the appearance of emulating their worst modern persecutors.

And isn’t there a rule about forced evangilizing in the very orthodox areas of Israel?

What's "forced" about what the missionaries did?

I don't know. I wouldn't exactly take the mayor's word for it either. Look for footage of the burnings.

Well that may be so but that does not take away from the barbarism of burning the New Testament.

Exactly. But maybe the government schools are as bad over there as they are here and they don't learn their own history.

Seems like yeshiva students are just as ignorant of history as public school students are in our own country. Who was it that said “Once they start burning books they will be burning people next?” Sad. :(

Jews burning books??? Amazing! I guess it just slipped their minds that the people of the area can simply ***ignore*** the missionaries and any literature they might hand out.

Let the riots begin!/sarc

...set fire to hundreds of copies of the New Testament in the latest act of violence against Christian missionaries...

How is setting books on fire "violence"? Is this like the new lib-speak "verbal violence" crap?

I believe that the Bible is God's Word but the paper itself is not to be revered. I would like it to be respected sure, but now it's "violence" to burn them?

>>What's “forced” about what the missionaries did?<<

I may be wrong in my term. But I think there are areas where the really Orthodox have ruled like a “no solicitors” rule. Where a person can live without missionaries (you know, like the one's I get at my front door) passing out stuff.

Here in MI, we have that rule in my city. It's stopped the publications and well dressed couples from ringing my doorbell.

Besides what I read, about six students did this. In my neighborhood they'd have a parent called and get pulled home by the ear. (after they cleaned up the mess)

Its cheap paper and ink. The words should be written on the fleshy tables of our heart.

These Orthodox Jews have that Law in them and it works wrath, even against those who would lay down their life for Israel. Wrath because they have no covering for their sin and can only follow a set of Laws that their fathers couldn't even follow.

Faith in the death burial and resurrection will set them at liberty. The New testament is just words written on paper and burning it is hardly barbaric.

Barbarism? I’m not sure I agree with you on this.
We are Christians, we don’t get in a tizzy about disrespect for paper.

Why are you posting this? Are you trying to incite a flamewar between Jews and Christians?

The difference between a few pyro-happy students and hundreds is quite significant, actually. The former shouldn't be a story at all. ...especially if no one was injured.

I think that they are trying to equate Christians with Muslims and provoke the same type of reaction as Muslims to the burning of the Koran.

Wow. Would you feel the same way if it were Muhammadans doing this? Or burning the Torah?
