Why the Young Flock to Pope Benedict
Catholic Online ^ | 7/12/08 | Anita Crane

Young people have been flocking to Pope Benedict XVI since he began teaching in his twenties.

As I write this, hundreds of thousands – from declared agnostics to metal heads to believing Catholics – are descending upon Sydney, Australia for World Youth Day 2008 ready to embrace Pope Benedict’s theme of Acts 1:8, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses.”

However, there is more to inspiration than some might think.

For example, while an Olympic athlete probably wouldn’t be able to spring from his seat after a transatlantic flight; that is precisely what the 80-year-old Vicar of Christ did when his plane landed at Andrews Air Force Base in April.

As my friend George Morton, editor of the Parish Visitor, witnessed, “All of the photographers and reporters around me were stunned when Pope Benedict XVI ran down the steps from the plane.”

The young people of today are going to be the next conservative generation.

They are hooked on things like chastity, Theology of the Body, sacrifice, and Latin!

God bless them all.

I nearly had an “et tu Pontiff” moment after reading the recent AP headlines regarding the Pope’s trip to Australia.

(AP Material can not be posted to FR at all because they are deathly afraid of us)

Apparently an AP reporter is traveling with the Pope on the long plane ride and filed a story from the air. The reporter asked Pope Benedict about “Climate Change.” He replied with some benign statements regarding our stewardship of creation (given!) and our need for all, including politicians, to be responsible to the earth’s ecology and changing our lives to be more ethical.

In brief, his comments echo the meme of the 70’s I heard when I was a kid.

Give a hoot, don’t pollute.

I agree with that. The one girl I know who (other than me) was excited about getting her conceal to carry license at 21 and worked at a conservative think tank, is exactly all that (with some Greek knowledge tossed in).

I’m kind of sad about this though. The weekend I’m in Vatican city He’ll be in Aussie-land. But at least he’ll be touching more than our lives, he’ll be touching lives that probably need him so much for people my age in Australia.
