Few thoughts:

1) You can buy the Qur'an anywhere, but you need to actually steal a consecrated Eucharist. I suppose you could get in line for it at a Church but to take it and not be a Catholic and do something mischievous with it is to commit a fraud. It's just understood that when you accept it (as is mentioned in all the missiles) that you are going to consume it and are entitled to consume it.

2) This is going to be a good demonstration of the difference between a true and right religion (Catholicism) and theocratic Fascism (Radical Islam) when you see the Church ask for people to pray for this man and you see the Islamofascists murder him, ala Pym Fortune.

3) Anyone want to wager the guy believes in man-made Global Warming? Or Darwinian Evolution? Thinks for himself my ass.

Never occurred to me, but wouldn't it be funny if people went into bookstores and bracketed copies of the koran with a recipe book for pork and a copy of the Torah? Discretely of course...

Muslim mobs deface Bibles all the time... Not much of a justification, but bracketing a Koran with a Torah and a pork recipe book is far less than burning copies of the Bible and screaming epithets about how Christian women and children deserve to be raped and killed at the top of ones lungs.

Good observation. I had similar thoughts on reading his closing remarks, overflowing with self-reverence, where he calls us to look at the apart from our "self-satisfied ignorance" and look at our world with "fresh eyes and a questioning mind."

Funny how it seems to be that, for Myer's and his ilk, their definition of what constitutes an open mind and questioning mind pretty much always bears a striking resemblance to themselves. You will not find wisdom in rituals and sacraments and dogma, which build only self-satisfied ignorance, but you can find truth by looking at your world with fresh eyes and a questioning mind.

This certainly would have been a dangerous act in previous centuries. Under the Bourbon kings, in France, anyone suspected of desecrating the Eucharist had his tongue pierced, and then was executed. In Italy, one freethinker who said he did not believe in the Holy Eurcharist (he did not actually violate it, he spoke against it) was boiled in oil.

These cases were connnected to Protestant/Catholic warfare. Jews also were subject to mob violence, often on the basis of false rumours. I read this book just recently:

A document written in Lower Bavaria in I338 declares:

The Jews, who deny the Christian faith, have ... conspired together in Germany ... they have also stolen the consecrated Host, throwing it in a fiery oven, striking it with hammers, and afflicting it with other indignities. Upon taking notice of these events, Sir Hartmann of Degenberg, together with his neighbors from Deggendorf, captured the Jews, burned them, and offered up their possessions for plunder. The same [happenings] also took place in Straubing and in other localities in Bavaria, with the exception of Vienna and Regensburg [where] it was against the will of the authorities.

James Obelkevich – ed., Religion and the People, 800-1700. (University of North Carolina Press 1979) 29.

The authorities, in that case, probably realised that this was attacks on innocent people. But one could not always rely upon the authorities, in those days.

And another case, just recently, in March 2007, in Nigeria.

MUSLIM pupils at a secondary school in northeastern Nigeria beat a teacher to death today after accusing her of desecrating the Koran.

Oluwatoyin Olusase, a Christian, was adjudicating an Islamic Religious Knowledge exam at the school in Gombe state when the incident occurred.

The students attacked her outside the school compound after the exam and killed her, witnesses said.

It was not clear exactly what Olusase had done that angered the students.

Police confirmed the killing and said their intervention had prevented the incident from turning into a riot.

Savage and peculiar. Many similar incidents have happened in Pakistan, where the victims themselves are usually Muslims, of smaller sects.

True enough, a missal can become a missile,
but only if you throw it.
