Consuming Fire

Exodus 34:14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

Read Ezekiel 16:35

Is your heart pounding? After reading this passage in Ezekiel it out to be! Here God’s jealous anger against His people is graphically described. Why is He angry? Because His covenant people forsook Him to follow false gods. The children of Israel, identified as “prostitutes” are accused of promiscuity with their “lovers” – detestable idols.

The first Commandment given to Moses ordered total allegiance to the One True God (found in Deuteronomy 5:7). The same is true for us today as Jesus confirmed in Matthew 22:37-38. If we begin to follow another god, God will unleash His anger against us in an effort to draw us back to Him. He will not share His glory with another. He will not tolerate the devil robbing His glory, nor will He tolerate us, if we give aid to stealing the glory that rightfully belong to Him. We need to be careful to give ourselves to God alone.

But this can be tricky. The devil’s middle name should be “Stealth” because he is the master of deception. If he knows that you already believe in the One True God, he won’t tap you on the shoulder and say, “Hey, check out this really cool statue! You should worship it!” No, the devil will try and lead us away with false teachings that sound like the truth. If we are unable to discern between God’s truth and the devil’s lies we will be doomed to suffer God’s jealous anger!

In the book of Joshua the children of Israel repented of their spiritual adultery, pledging to follow God. Joshua cautioned, “You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; He is a jealous God….If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after He has been good to you” (Joshua 24:19-20). Truly our God is not to be taken lightly; He is “a consuming fire!” (Deuteronomy 4:24)

PRAYER POINT

Pray that God will keep you in His truth and out of His jealous wrath. Pray that He will help you comprehend more fully the seriousness of discerning the truth.
