Catholic Caucus: Having Life Chains to mark the Feast of the Annuniciation
January 23, 2009 | vanity

The traditional Life Chain is held on the first Sunday in October.

But should there be only one Life Chain per year -- especially if Congress addresses F.O.C.A. before next October? One solution is to have Life Chains as a semi-annual event.

The 40 Days for Life is now a semi-annual event.

The next problem would be if we have life chains twice a year, then when would be the most suitable time.

It is my personal belief that the weekend before the Annunciation or the weekend after the Annunciation would be a great time.

After all, that is the feast that marks the holy conception of Jesus in Mary's womb with her acceptance of the proclamation of the Angel Gabriel.

So this would be the weekend (Saturday or Sunday) before or after this feast. For 2009, this happens during Lent.

This can even be scheduled on Sunday, March 22nd or Saturday March 21st. Or the following weekend -- March 28-29.

Having more pro-life events and spreading the message of life is getting more and more important with the pro-abortion presidency and the pro-abortion Congress we now have. We have a greater need for activism.

The Catholic Church has a pro-life coordinator in most Dioceses -- so the Catholic Church by itself could help stage such a event -- especially with the help of the Knights of Columbus, and activism by local priests and religious (nuns and brothers).

Please forgive the vanity, but I want to make this an issue during the time of the March for Life.

Currently, Life Chains are set for the 1st Sunday in October.

There is also an alternate Sunday (in the case of scheduling problems).

We in the Diocese of Harrisburg have a pro life coordinator and each church has 1 or 2 coordinators for the parish.

I and a young woman (I'm old) put together Life Chain for tomorrow. We have our local parish as the background and a base to work from

We are the Citizens Concerned for Human Life and are part of the Pro Life Federation Of Pennsylvania. We are a 501 Corp. and we are not allowed to politic. It is why the Church likes our approach. We are filed as an educational group. Which means we can make the people aware of the pro abortion agenda of certain individuals but we can't tell people who to vote for or against.

In the years I have been involved I have had 1 non Catholic clergy voice a pro life. We have over 150 Churches in our area and each gets a letter and a phone call.

Our two priests are very active. In today's local paper the pastor wrote a two column article discussing Life Chain and people's participation

We are the only participants in our area. I have noticed the women clergy in several non Catholic Churches commenting positively about “Free Choice”

I don't know about the “Catholic Church's staging the event”.

What is needed is for the lay people to listen to their conscience and participate.
