People (Cardinal) Mahony has not banned (but first put down the cup of java)
CMR ^ | March 5, 2009 | matthew archbold

Cardinal Roger Mahony on Tuesday banned Holocaust-denying British Bishop Richard Williamson from any Roman Catholic church, school or other facility in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

If this isn't piling on, I don't know what is. The blog has had plenty to say about Bishop Williamson but this is pretty darn ridiculous coming from Cardinal Mahony.

In The Tidings, Mahony wrote:

In the Los Angeles Archdiocese, Williamson is hereby banned from entering any Catholic church, school or other facility, until he and his group comply fully and unequivocally with the Vatican's directives regarding the Holocaust. Later this year, I, Cardinal Mahony, will visit Israel and pay my respects to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust at the Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem.

Holocaust deniers like Williamson will find no sympathetic ear or place of refuge in the Catholic Church, of which he is not --- and may never become --- a member.

So CMR compiled this little list of folks that are still considered Catholics in good standing and very welcome in Mahony's diocese:
The Pro-Choice Governor

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

The Speaker of Perpetual Indulgence

These Batty Broads

Vice President Aquinas

That Naked Jogging Priest
(Not an actual photo)

And Moonie Marryin' Milingo

LOL!

It's instructive that Mahoney is very worried about things that happened 50 years ago and a long way away, and with which he has little if anything to do . . . but not about things that are happening right under his nose and within his jurisdiction . . . .

Who's running the countdown clock to his retirement?

Gosh, only two years!

Y'all have a lot farther to go on Hubbard, though. I'm sorry. :-(

This is instructive, indeed. To Mahoney, actual heretics and moral reprobates--abortionists, out and proud homosexuals, new agers, and child abusers--are welcome in the Church. However, brother bishops who have erroneous, misguided, or just plain stupid ideas about history must be cast out of the fold forever.

May God have mercy on Cardinal Mahoney.

Mahony all but denies the on-going holocaust of abortion by not silencing Catholic voices who support it. Will he ban himself as a holocaust denier?

________

Wow. Just wow.

That holocaust thing, so long ago and so far away. Absurd that a man of God should concern himself with such trivia.

Please tell me I do not need a sarcasm tag.

I thought that Pope Benedict XVI voided Williamson's excommunication. Assuming that Williamson is a baptized Catholic, how is it that he's not a member of the Catholic Church?

Wow. Just wow.

Hitler and his German National Socialist regime killed between 10 million and 15 million innocent people by direct, systematic murder. Hitler is dead, his regime defeated, his ideology disgraced and repudiated, his followers scattered and killed.

The American Abortion Regime has so far killed more than FIFTY MILLION innocent people in a program of deliberate, systematic murder. The numbers increase every day, as the American Abortion Regime is not only in power, but consolidating its power. ALL Americans, to the extent that they have not actively opposed the American Abortion Regime have the blood of the innocent murdered unborn on their hands.

The current American Abortion Regime is of far greater relevance than the disgraced and defeated German National Socialist regime to folks in positions of religious, social, or political leaderhip in the United States. Anyone who cannot see this seriously needs to wake up, take the blinders off, and have a look around. Or maybe they need seriously to repent and be converted to Christ.

Chill.

The fact is that Mahoney can have no effect whatsoever on Hitler or Hitler's actions, or for that matter Williamson, who is not only outwith his jurisdiction but has to my knowledge never been near LA.

It's not that Mahoney should not condemn the Holocaust or the illiterate idiots who deny it . . . anybody with a functioning brain condemns the Holocaust. And that's the problem with Mahoney's little statement.

He's roundly condemning something old, far away, and that just about everybody in the entire world knows was wrong, while ignoring the egregious public scandals that are occurring on his watch, and in his diocese, right now.

Mahoney: "Don't look at me . . . look at that bad, bad man over there!"

Hitler is dead, his regime defeated, his ideology disgraced and repudiated, his followers scattered and killed.
_________

One need not diminish one holocaust to decry another. Suggesting that the holocaust happened long ago and far away seems to minimize its horror. Further, to suggest that because Hitler is gone we not fear another totalitarian, murderous regime is (IMO) pretty darn naive.

You can bash Mahoney all you want without bringing up his comments about Williamson, not a word of which was out of place. This humble commentator would not want to breathe the same air as the so-call Bishop either.

Like it or not, the German National Socialist mass-murder/genocide of various "untermenschen" is history. It's over. It's not happening any more. Denouncing it, although thoroughly justified, can often be a way of scoring cheap rhetorical points. Nobody (save a few fringe lunatics) will contradict the one who denounces Hitler.

Abortion is current events. The killing is going on right now. And, for that matter, one could easily argue that "another totalitarian murderous regime" is not merely something to beware of in the future, but something that is currently in power in America. In fact, I would so argue.

So ... for Mahoney to denounce Williamson the (Nazi) Holocaust Denier whilst ignoring Schwarzenegger and Pelosi the (Abortion) Holocaust Committers is the height of hypocrisy.

OK Roger, that's all well and good but what say Williamson comes out and tells the world he's gay and that he has a boyfriend in your diocese, hmmmm?

Ahaaaa!! Gotcha!!

Now that would make you roll out the welcome mat, wouldn't it??

Still unsure?

OK, what say he admits he previously molested a couple of seminarians?

Ohhhh yeah..........now he's stayin' in your guest room, right Roger baby? Now you don't care 'bout no stinkin' Holocaust!

No, his comments were out of place precisely because the only thing he can manage to bring himself to condemn is something that is over and that everyone condemns already.

Meanwhile, he completely ignores stuff that is happening now on his own watch, where his condemnation might actually mean something. Millions of babies are dying now, thousands of them in Mahoney's diocese, homosexuals are subverting the Church and the family now, politicians are thumbing their noses at the Church while using it as cover to shill for votes now, and Mahoney can't bring himself to utter a word.

Of course it's because condemning something that's going on right now in his own back yard might bring him some obloquy or static from the usual liberal agitators, and he's afraid to confront them.

SOOOO much easier to waste a lot of ink condemning something that everybody already condemns, and that takes absolutely zero courage or commitment.

It's what I believe used to be called (in another context) "cheap grace".

Have no idea what got into me ... Arguing anything else when the topic has turned to abortion is pure folly.

I admire the passion you 2 bring to the world. I’m just not always going to agree, if that’s OK.

Hey, man, I gave you lots of other choices besides abortion . . .

. . . none of which Mahoney wants to have anything to do with.

dmz, no you don’t need a sarcasm tag, I’m sure we all agree with you about Nazism, Hitler, etc. No need to even expand on that, don’t think anyone meant to belittle that. I think the point that fell through the cracks here is that Williamson and the SSPX negotiations have absolutely nothing to do with Cardinal Mahony. He has the largest archdiocese in the country, with millions of Catholics, many of whom no doubt have misinformed ideas of history, right under his nose.

It’s not a Cardinal’s job to cast his ire on a bishop in another part of the world who has absolutely nothing to do with him, on a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the Magisterium. This is nothing but Mahony getting good press for Mahony. It’s about a significant as the City of Berkeley declaring its airspace to be a nuclear free zone. The real importance of the issues is lost in the ego-driven stupidity of the political gestures.

Many of them have misinformed ideas of the Catholic Faith, or no faith whatsoever, due to the heterodox "teachings" they receive from the pulpit and in religious education classes, which in many parishes are a disgrace.
