Blacks in the Scriptures
Click to listen to Audios

Since the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830, there have been numerous works attempting to answer the many questions regarding Blacks in the eyes of God. This is the first of such projects in the history of the LDS Church to be based primarily upon the scriptures. Darius Gray and Marvin Perkins are active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have utilized the Old and New Testaments, the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price to bring you this collection of scriptures and history.

We truly believe that as the word of the Lord on these issues is fully understood, many souls will come unto Christ. Our intention is to help those who desire to comprehend the words of the Most High concerning all men and women. In the process, many myths and false traditions may be dispelled.

If there are any faults in this work, they are the faults of two of the Lord’s imperfect servants. Our prayer is that all will be able to look past the messengers and focus on the message from the scriptures, and thus be uplifted

‘It’s one of the best kept secrets’

Take a good look at Marvin Perkins. You’ll never guess what group he joined and why.

The Church's Official Stance

Let there be no doubt that Latter-day Saints recognize the role of our religion in furthering Christ's command to love our neighbors. Let there be no doubt that we wish to correct the centuries of division between races. But let there be no doubt that McKeever and Johnson do not give the reader any indication that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stands with all other Christian churches in their efforts to heal the wounds of the past and reach out to a future of respect, tolerance and understanding between all of God's children.

Here is a small sampling of the many authoritative quotes spoken to LDS Church membership in semi-annual conferences broadcast world-wide within the last decade:

Not long ago the First Presidency and the Twelve issued a public statement from which I quote: "It is morally wrong for any person or group to deny anyone his or her inalienable dignity on the tragic and abhorrent theory of racial or cultural superiority.

We call upon all people everywhere to recommit themselves to the time-honored ideals of tolerance and mutual respect. We sincerely believe that as we acknowledge one another with consideration and compassion we will discover that we can all peacefully coexist despite our deepest differences.3

President Hinckley expressed these sentiments in the semi-annual conference a year later:

We must not be partisans of any doctrine of ethnic superiority. We live in a world of diversity. We can and must be respectful toward those with whose teachings we may not agree. We must be willing to defend the rights of others who may become the victims of bigotry.4

One statement alone, given by Bruce R. McConkie to Church seminary and institute teachers shortly after the 1978 revelation granting priesthood to all races, answers each and every objectionable statement or action that McKeever and Johnson can dredge up from bygone eras:

There are statements in our literature by the early brethren which we have interpreted to mean that the Negroes would not receive the priesthood in mortality. I have said the same things. All I can say to that is that it is time disbelieving people repented and got in line and believed in a living, modern prophet. Forget everything that I have said, or what President Brigham Young or President George Q. Cannon or whomsoever has said in days past that is contrary to the present revelation. We spoke with a limited understanding and without the light and knowledge that now has come into the world.

We get our truth and our light line upon line and precept upon precept. We have now had added a new flood of intelligence and light on this particular subject, and it erases all the darkness, and all the views and all the thoughts of the past. They don't matter any more. It doesn't make a particle of difference what anybody ever said about the Negro matter before the first day of June of this year [1978].

It is a new day and a new arrangement, and the Lord has now given the revelation that sheds light out into the world on this subject. As to any slivers of light or any particles of darkness of the past, we forget about them. We now do what meridian Israel did when the Lord said the gospel should go to the gentiles. We forget all the statements that limited the gospel to the house of Israel, and we start going to the gentiles.5

Last and most important, the defining scripture that is binding on Latter-day Saints says, "he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile."6

“Cordial folks are Welcome!”

Hello, Restornu!

I find it a good step forward that blacks are now
treated equally in the LDS church. It is very positive.

If I understand the new teaching, it would appear that
blacks are allowed full temple ceremonies and able to
get into the highest LDS heaven in the presence of
God. Is that accurate?

best,
ampu

new teachings no new understandings for those men who hearts were blind!

The Lord is so patinece with those who take longer to over come their misconptions, prejudious.

Sadly this is one of thing when it is said man would be tried in all things.

Sometimes it don’t seem fair but if one see the bigger picture why they needed to wait until their brother woke up. But those who were put upon by others and continued to be true to the Lord their blessings are great.

1 peter 4

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified

I myself as well as many others in this life have been in trials one thought was unfair but in the end if one endures with out murmuring they will have learn lessons and insight about themselves and things of the Lord which could not have been received nor treasured any other way.

As to those who hinder the work of the Lord their reward of all the Lord had in store for them might not be as great.
