Notre Dame's Fr. Jenkins meeting with Obama in DC today?

UPDATE, 4:25p: From Joseph Lawler (Phil's son) at the American Spectator:

... This is still merely a rumor, but indeed FlightAware shows the ND jet flying to Dulles this morning....

That Fr. Jenkins would rescind the invitation seems unlikely given that on Saturday Fr. Jenkins reaffirmed his invitation to a crowd celebrating black student-athletes at Notre Dame that "shook down the thunder" with applause. But then what could they be talking about? If there is any change in the status of Obama's invitation, it's big news.

Well this is very interesting. Could it be possible that Barry won't attend after all?

Maybe someone pulled rank on Padre John. "Sorry Barry, my boss won't let me."

I wish he would be “recalled to Rome” and then sort of wither away.

Well, look... Something about this man’s title bothered me. President of a large prestigious university, and his title is only Father? I would have thought he would have been made a Monsignor at the least.

For those of you who are non-catholics, Monsignor is a largely ceremonial title, given to respected and cherished Fathers who have acheived some level of status beyond simply that of parish priest. It reflects the fact that not every great priest will become a bishop, but nevertheless many among the ranks do perform outstanding service to Our Lord and the congregation.

The fact that he had not been elevated to the title raises many questions for me. It would seem that he would receive it just to recognize his rank at the University, unless someone was standing in the way. Methinks he has made some enemies along the way.

Dear ichabod1,

I don't think that priests who are members of religious orders (such as the Congregation of the Holy Cross, of which Fr. Jenkins is a member) receive the title of Monsignor.

Ah! You learn something new every day, especially when you’re a relatively new Catholic. I’ll keep that in mind.

Dear ichabod1,

The exception to the general rule is when priests of religious orders also are bishops, as bishops may make use of the title “Monsignor.”

This is still merely a rumor, but indeed FlightAware shows the ND jet flying to Dulles this morning....

Why does the president of ND need his own plane?

They could have picked a different location.
A Tyson's Corner or PG County shopping center or Popeye's maybe with a Mister Microphone.

He wanted the fake Ivy Catholic college setting to appear intellectual and
sophisticated. Hence, the blasphemous biblical metaphors in his speech.

I think I’ll add him to the end of my list.

I love him, but that’s probably because when he was assigned to Houston, before he took over as Archbishop, he attended a funeral for a priest at the church I was singing and taking RCIA at, and I got to stand around in the narthex and chew the fat with him for a while. Really nice, down to earth fellow. And then he preached at the diocesan Rite of Election, the man can flat out PREACH. I think it’s very important for Bishops to be able to preach. I know they’re largely administrators, but the basic skill set for being the Pastor includes preaching.

He's on the list, and LifeSiteNews.com had coverage of his condemnation. He was one of the first to condemn Father Jenkins invitation to Obama.

He is #12 on the list -- because he is a "D" -- DiNardo...

12. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo - Houston, TX

D'Arcy is the only exception -- since is the Bishop for Notre Dame -- he is at the top of the list...

But the LifeSiteNews.com list has always had Cardinal DiNardo...

It is just a very long list these days...

An update from the Jill Stanek website:

April 23, 2009 Update on Notre Dame's Fr. Jenkins' trip to DC

UPDATE, 4/23, 7a: Per American Papist, Notre Dame's plane flew back to South Bend last night, according to FlightAware:

Aircraft Cessna 560 Citation 5
Origin Washington Dulles Intl
Destination South Bend Rgnl
Date Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009
Duration 1 hours 24 minutes
Scheduled Actual/Estimated
Departure 09:58PM EDT 09:58PM EDT
Arrival 11:22PM EDT 11:22PM EDT

An AmP reader wondered if the prodigal son were returning home. The prodigal son in Jesus' parable only realized he was a prodigal when he ran out of money. So we shall see, because while speculation was Jenkins flew to DC to meet with President Abortion, AmP reported yesterday:

Now an informed source tells me that Fr. Jenkins is in town for a multi-day seminar/symposium for high level Notre Dame donors, which has been planned for some time now and involves several speakers and events. Because the activities are private, they were not "advertised" to the wider public.

What timing. Hopefully some of those donors closed their checkbooks.

_______________

UPDATE, 4/22, 8:20a: The Notre Dame Observer News is denying on Twitter that Fr. Jenkins met with Barack Obama at the White House yesterday:

Note: even though the Notre Dame Observer News is denying that Father Jenkins met with President Obama, it does not mean that Father Jenkins did not go to the Whitehosue to discuss the issue with Whitehouse staff.

It would be unlikely for Obama to met with Father Jenkins at this point -- regardless...

At least, that is in my opinion.

The meeting of the full Board of Trustees and Board of Fellows this coming Friday is far more important...

Interesting developments. It’s great to know some people on the inside, huh?
