Who Created Evil?

The debate about who created evil is an important one since atheists and skeptics use the existence of evil in their arguments against theism. It is incumbent upon all Christians to understand what the Scriptures say about the God they worship and the existence of evil in the world. If God created everything, and if evil is in the world, does it follow that God created evil? We are told as Christians to believe what the Bible says. Even the popular children's song, “Jesus Loves Me”, has in its lyrics, “Jesus loves me, this I know for the Bible tells me so”. So, let us read what the Bible says.

In (Genesis 1:1) we read, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The New Testament says in (John 1:3), “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” So, we now know that God made everything through Christ, but are there any Scriptures that specifically say God is the author of evil? The closest we can get is (Isaiah 45:7), “I make peace and create calamity”, and (Amos 3:6), “If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it?” Ok, can we then point to any passages that might elude to God condoning evil? Probably the best examples would be.......

This is a great article on where evil originated and who is to blame for it's existence.

He is correct about what John Calvin believed, even the 1946 Westminster Confession of Faith says God is not the author of sin.

CHAPTER III.
Of God's Eternal Decree

I. God from all eternity did by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass; yet so as thereby neither is God the author of sin; nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures, nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established.

Evil was not created. It was chosen.

When God gave men and angels the power to disobey him, He gave men and angels the power to act with evil intent.

On the other hand, if He hadn't given us that power, our obedience would be hollow and our lives would be robotic.

As it is, our obedience is an act of love, not demand or regulation.

Muslims. Democrats. “Liberals”. Communists, socialists. Saul Alinsky. Barack Hussein Obammy. Nancy Pelosi. John Murtha, Her Thighness, Harry Reid.

The list is too long, way too long to go into completely here. Use your imagination.

From My Perspective...

Evil is not a matter of creation. It is a matter of absense. Darkness is not a creation it is a matter of absense. Like Darkness is the absense of light, evil is the absense of good. Without God, there is no good, there is only chaos, entropy and the evil that comes with it.

The atheist argument of Gods creation of evil is a straw man like asking whether god can create a rock that he cannot lift. The answer is of course he can, and he certainly did.

The Hardened Heart of Man is the stone that God cannot lift.

At least that’s what i think.

Applause, sir. Sin is falling short of the mark. Evil is the absence of good. Dark is the absence of light. What a great post.

Actually, the response "Obama" might have a great deal to do with this subject. It all depends on "who's his daddy"?

Fallen creatures themselves bear full responsibility for their sin. And all evil in the universe emanates from the sins of fallen creatures

This is true but God did design imperfect creatures who will sin. In the Garden of Eden God punished mankind for the disobedience of two people. Not fair by earthly standards but it odesn't matter. God is still God and we are sinful creatures. God is sovereign and all things including sin are used for His glory. God may have not "created" sin itself but he designed imperfect creatures and allows sin and evil to exist in this fallen world.

You said — Evil is not a matter of creation. It is a matter of absense. Darkness is not a creation it is a matter of absense. Like Darkness is the absense of light, evil is the absense of good. Without God, there is no good, there is only chaos, entropy and the evil that comes with it.

Well, God tells us about the beginning of evil and from whom it came. God tells us that the “beginning of evil” came from a being that God created and who was “perfect” as God created him (so God did not create any evil in him, in the first place). Nor did God create any evil in the whole of Creation, all that He made (and everything that exists and/or has been made, aside from God, Himself, was made and created by His hand, so there was no place for evil to “hide out” at any time, until it was found in that one created being, first...).

That created being has many titles and we see the Bible calls him by many names. We can several different names and titles listed in Revelation for him, and here we see Lucifer, the King of Tyre, the anointed cherub who covers — and in other places, Satan, the dragon, the father of lies, etc, and so on...

The beginning of evil, as told to us by God (who happened to have been there at the time... LOL...)

God says (of Satan...) — “You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.”

Isaiah 14

12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!

13 For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’

15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.

16 “Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,

17 Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’

18 “All the kings of the nations, All of them, sleep in glory, Everyone in his own house;

19 But you are cast out of your grave Like an abominable branch, Like the garment of those who are slain, Thrust through with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit, Like a corpse trodden underfoot.

20 You will not be joined with them in burial, Because you have destroyed your land And slain your people. The brood of evildoers shall never be named.

Ezekiel 28

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

12 “Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created.

14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.

15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.

16 “By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones.

17 “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, That they might gaze at you.

18 “You defiled your sanctuaries By the multitude of your iniquities, By the iniquity of your trading; Therefore I brought fire from your midst; It devoured you, And I turned you to ashes upon the earth In the sight of all who saw you.

19 All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; You have become a horror, And shall be no more forever.” ‘

And there we have it — the “beginning of evil”...

What about the nephilims who came down and mated with earth women to create the giants and other evil people?

I think the Nephilim were the giants, created by the mating of the "daughters of men" and the "Sons of God."

Genesis 6:1-7

1 When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal ; his days will be a hundred and twenty years." 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. 5 The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. 7 So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them."

Is God the Author of Evil?

A University professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!" "God created everything?" The professor asked. "Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied. The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet and did not respond to the professor's hypothetical definition.. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?" "Of course", replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?" "What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"

The other students snickered at the young man's question. The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?" The professor responded, "Of course it does." The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil. To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

The young man's name is supposedly -Albert Einstein

Is this a true story, who knows? It was emailed to me a few years ago.....
