Fascinating. And now Obama is pledged to relocate Palestinians here. Where is he planning on relocating the rest of us? What will historians write of our nation in 1000 years?

Last Paragraph: Over the course of several generations under Assyrian rule, the Israelites - the bulk of the Jewish people - were in effect killed off as Jews with kindness.

Abraham Rabinovich makes a common error about the genealogy of the Northern Tribes that were carried into Assyria. They weren't Jewish. They were not descended from Judah. They each had their own tribal progenitors.

When The Lord divided the Kingdom because of Solomon's sins [I Kings 11:9-13] He promised to leave one other tribe with Judah, (Solomon's tribe) for the sake of his father, David. This tribe was Benjamin. The two kingdoms became known as Israel (the north) and Judah (the south). The north was composed of ten tribes and the south two tribes....Judah and Benjamin.

When the books of the Chronicles and Kings were written (post Babylonian captivity) the southern kingdom was simply called "The Jews". The tribes of the north were never called Jews. In fact, the first time you see the word Jew in scripture they are at war against "Israel" [II Kings 16:1-6] 1 In the seventeenth year of "Pekah" the son of Remaliah "Ahaz" the son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign. 2 Twenty years old was Ahaz when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem, and did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD his God, like David his father. 3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. 5 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him. 6 At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day.

Pekah, King of Israel and Rezin, King of Assyria are allied together against the Jews and their King, Ahaz.

Here is the Hebrew definition of Jew: 3064. Yhuwdiy (yeh-hoo-dee') a Jehudite (i.e. Judaite or Jew), or descendant of Jehudah (i.e. Judah)

Here is the Greek definition of Jew: 2453. Ioudaios (ee-oo-dah'-yos) as a country); Judaean, i.e. belonging to Jehudah

Jacob (Israel) had twelve sons who all became progenitors of their own tribes. They did not descend from Judah. Only the Jews did this. In the course of time Benjamin, because of their close association with the larger tribe of Judah, became known as Jews also. Levi, as well later on joined the southern kingdom of Judah and they also took on the appellation of Jew: [II Chronicles 11:13-17] 13 And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their coasts. 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest's office unto the LORD: 15 And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made. 16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers. 17 So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.

The northern Kingdom of Israel was finally carried into exile to Assyria in 721 B.C. [II Kings 17:6] and there is no Biblical mention of their return. On the other hand, the southern Kingdom, now composed of Judah, Benjamin and Levi (known jointly now as Judah) [II kings 17:18] returned from their Babylonian exile as the article states. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah chronicle their return to Jerusalem with no mention of the ten northern tribes. You do not find mention in these books of any other tribe except Judah, Benjamin and Levi.

This is why the Holy Land during Our Lord's walk upon this Earth was called "Judea".....it had been resettled by the Jews from Babylon. It was not referred to as Israel.

less fanciful if more jarring notion is that the lost Israelites stayed put in Mesopotamia and that their DNA lies just below the skin of many of the current inhabitants of Iraq and Iran, perhaps even that of some of the current leadership.

Wutchu talkin' bout, Willis?
