The Catholic Bishops and ACORN
The American Thinker ^ | September 23, 2009 | Mark Wauck

This is a good news/bad news story. First the good news: The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) cut off all funding to ACORN at some point in 2008, after revelations of the embezzlement of nearly $1 million dollars by the brother of Wade Rathke, the founder of ACORN.

What's not such great news is that the Catholic Church, through the CCHD, was funding ACORN in the first place.

Catholic News Service (CNS) carried an article on October 16, 2008: CCHD ends funding to ACORN over financial irregularities. According to the article:

...CCHD funded more than 320 ACORN projects with grants totaling more than $7.3 million during the last 10 years. He said the community organization also had received funds since early in CCHD's history. CCHD's Web site reveals the campaign gave about $1.11 million to 40 ACORN affiliates in 2007 and $1.17 million to 45 affiliates in 2006. Over the years, some of the funds undoubtedly were used for voter registration drives...

At the Kennedy Funeral we saw:

1) Sean Cardinal O'Malley "confronting" (as he explained on his blog) President Obama about abortion funding and the proposed universal health care bill. The "confrontation" was NOT reminiscent of Leo the Great meeting Attila the Hun.

2) Theodore Cardinal McCarrick disingenuously claiming to read a "fatherly reply" from the Pope to Ted Kennedy's famous letter, a reply which, in fact, was NOT from the Pope but from some underling in the Secretariat of State.

Meanwhile, from Bishop Terry Steib, SVD of the Diocese of Memphis, TN, we get this nonsense:

"Some racism still exists, he said, and cited the recent furor in Catholic circles over the honorary degree awarded by Notre Dame University to Obama, who supports abortion on demand. Other presidents have had disagreements with the positions of the Catholic Church, for example, in war policies and capital punishment, but have received honorary degrees without similar objection, he noted." http://www.cst-phl.com/

The Campaign for Human Development Collection is coming up in November.

Now is the time to ask questions and get clarifications.

Especially in light of the scandalous fact that the majority of Catholics voted for Barack Obama.

This is yet another reason I avoid donating to any organization which just donates to another organization. How much of those donations are wasted on overhead and not used to help anyone in need?

Don’t donate to the CCHD. Donate to a charity whose work you know and whose leadership you trust. They aren’t that hard to find.

...the majority of Catholics voted for Barack Obama.

That bogus statistic lives on and on.

So the 54% Catholic vote reported by cathnews.com is a bogus statistic?

That’s good to know!

I’ve seen so many OBAMA bumper stickers on cars in the parish parking lot, I was deceived!

And hey there, salvation, I see you’ve given up plastering every thread with the paltry list of bishops, some from giant sees like Podunk, who mustered the courage to speak out about Notre Dame.

Does your being able to call the scandal of our having ever given ACORN anything “old news,” somehow make you feel better?

In fact, if you could summon up the humility to read the article that was published today, you’d feel less sanguine about how the CCHD is STILL being administered.

But that’s alright: “ostrich Catholicism” on the part of “conservative” Catholics is what helped get us into this mess in the first place.

You just keep wishin’ and hopin’ and it will all go away.

Yes. It's based on non-scientific polling polling done by Pew.
