Thanks!
You’re welcome!
Doesn’t the “born by teleportation” or “Star Trek transporter” theory imply that Jesus’s body was not fully human?
After reading that post I now know why the early Gospel writers and Paul did NOT lapse rhapsodic over the “”FLESHY” details of Mary’s conception and subsequent birth and weaning of our Lord, indeed there is quite a paucity of such info in the Bible. At some point such speculation crosses over into the realm of the lurid and the central message of Christ gets lost in fantastical superstition bordering on porn!
The Virgin Galaktotrophousa "The Spelaiotissa"
1778
As a nursing mother (for the last 13 years) I have to say that picture is anatomically weird.
Do you think, dear very Western lady, that icons depict, or are supposed to depict, physical realities?
If I did, I’d be wrong, right?
I’m sorry, but that looks like some kind of space-age detachable mammary thingie-bob. Perhaps the artist had never seen a lady nursing a baby in real life?
(I’m a little flaked out since the accident, so if the moderator finds my reflections inappropriate, I’ll understand.)
"FLESHY details of Marys conception "
The Holy Spirit is just that, Spirit.
Lk 1: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee (censored). And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God."
"subsequent birth and weaning of our Lord"
Lk 11:" 27 ¶ And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee and the paps (censored) that gave thee suck."
“If I did, Id be wrong, right?”
Right.
“Perhaps the artist had never seen a lady nursing a baby in real life?”
That seems highly unlikely, given when and where the icon was written.
You're a credit to you're gender! Keep up the good work!
And do some search on Iconography.
This Protestant Christian found this article very interesting. Thanks for posting it!
In my copious free time ...
Weren’t most of the icon-writers monastics?
“Werent most of the icon-writers monastics?”
Yes; and all of them had also grown up in families, contrary to popular opinion. Some of them were even widowers with children of their own.
Well, maybe this one was the baby of his family ;-).
All that and not a single New Testament Biblical reference?
Seems odd.
Back in the early 60’s we all were employees of a small consulting firm (about 24 engineers)when a discussion came up.
A young Jewish Perdue graduate stated, “I always wondered why the Catholics pray to Mary, and the Protestants don’t.”
Now I had just started to read, study and memorize the Scripture.
I blurted out from memory, verses that were new to me. I said, I don’t know why either for the Bible says:
“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (1 Timothy 2:3-6)
You’re welcome!
