A new -- or is it old? -- manual for Mormons
After a decade of going back to Brigham, back to Joseph and back to Wilford, Mormons are going back to basics.
Starting Sunday, adult Latter-day Saints will shelve their study of past Mormon prophets and return to fundamentals of their faith as spelled out in a 30-year-old book called Gospel Principles .
Twice a month, Mormon men in their priesthood meetings and women in their Relief Society sessions will consider a different chapter in the book, originally published in 1978, which discusses everything from the nature of God and Christ's atoning sacrifice to the need for baptism and temple rituals.
Until now, the book largely has been used as a primer for new converts to the 13.5 million-member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

One intriguing change, Witten says, is that all references to late apostle Bruce R. McConkie's quasi-authoritative book, Mormon Doctrine , have been excised.
"Quotes were updated to reference materials that are more accessible to members of the LDS Church worldwide," church spokeswoman Kim Farah explains. "For example, the series, Teachings of Presidents of the Church , is referenced because it is available in 28 languages, while Mormon Doctrine is only available in a few."
-SNIP-
"While the prophets we've studied have been great, there are several more I'd like to hear from."
On top of that, Evans doesn't see the revised Gospel Principles manual as "a cure for the problem of boredom, but maybe no manual can cure that."

“However, he didn’t break OUT of jail, a mob broke IN to kill him.
Joe got what he deserved in a rough frontier justice way,
after attempting to steal the wives of others and ordering
the destruction of private property that publicized his
atrocities.
He also unloaded his ammo into a crowd, gave the masonic
symbol for distress (true faith there), and fell after
attempting to jump.
This ended the life of a man who was a fraud in every
sense. His gun misfired 3 out of 6 times. His teaching misfired 6 out of 6 times.

Does sound a lot alike. Doesn't really matter, neither have made me a kitty from scratch so I don't hold a lot of merit to what they said.
They may as well be preaching from Harry Potter or the Lord of the Rings, they would have the same amount of truth as the BOM.

Well well. Ok let's all go another book another reveal by the higher up ldsers. Nothing about seeking the Face of God, nothing about praying for guidance, nothing about Spiritual revival.....just let some old man tell us how to march and think.

What makes the paper obsolete? The problems that it talked about have not even been addressed by your crowd. Does Christianity need DSS scholars just to 'counter' lds - no, because solid basic study of those documents always comes out in favor of Christians. How many "this is mormon artifacts" articles are there in peer reviewed papers on middle east archaeology -(crickets).
Do Christian scholars need to counter mormonism platonic view of the indistructable state of matter - no Christian apologists and philosophers have long established creation 'ex nihlo'.
How many "scholars" do Christians need to examine the bom - none, because it is a fictional work of the early 19th century - just like what mormon B.H. Roberts concluded.
I talked with Mosser about three years ago and he said that what he and Paul Owen said in the paper was just as pertinent at that time as when they wrote it.
On your say - so. OK, I have yet to see this abundance of mormon scholarship doing anything but creating flatulence in an attempt to obfuscate the issues. In case you haven't figured it out, Mossler and Owens do not speak for the entirety of Christianity - it is just their opinions. However, what I do amusing is that mormon "scholars" are not authorized to establish doctrine or areas of faith - that is reserved to the GA.
I also love it that most AMs have discovered the old tactic of not asking just one or two questions at a time so they can be addressed, but to throw out a whole bunch of crap, hoping something will stick on the wall.
I also love it when morg apologists just whine about those issues and walk away. No rule says you have to answer all of them.
Im amazed that your post only brought up four questions, since most AMs try to bring up at least 10. That is evidence that discussion isnt even wanted.
I was being generous - feel free to pick one and try to run with it. The evidence shows that morg scholarship is pretty weak on these items. Show me the peer reviewed archaeological articles saying that _______ city in Central America is the Mormon city of ________. Or the peer reviewed article on the discovery of 'reformed hieroglyphics'. Come on Lynn, put up for once, I'm leaving you an open field, pick a subject and run with it.
I can understand that attitude from liberals and those global-warmer types, but not from people who say that Christ is the center of their lives.
Ok, I've given you multiple topics to choose and run with - or are you going to run away like the liberals and AGW types you accuse me of being. I await to see if you have anything of substance to offer.

Ur,
“Global warmers do the same thing. Yep, the debate is over and theyre on the right side and all those who oppose them are self-deluded liars and just plain evil people.”
You may want to refer to the Apostle Paul, who had plenty
of Christian experience dealing with heresy...
“But what I am doing I will continue to do, so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting.” II Corinthians 11:12
Correction of error is a necessary Christian value.

So, if error correction is a necessary Christian value, why are some many “true” Christians so concerned about the errors of others and not any of their own?

.......but who is the "real" Paul Owen? ......and what door is he behind?
........and does he expect anyone to read that jibberish?
OY Vey!
To: greyfoxx39
First off greyfoxx, cut and paste has never done it for me. In lieu of cutting and pasting 1,000 lines for James White’s site and then expecting me to read the whole thing is silly. I don’t know why people do that type of cutting and pasting.
Second of all, James White is a buffoon. Of course James White is going to denigrate Owen and Mosser. James White has built his little empire upon the exact thing that they are condemning and James White, with his phony degree, isn’t willing to do what it takes to do what is right.
Oh, BTW, did you realize that JW is now a doctor, or at least he says he has one from the Columbia Evangelical Seminary, a school without a classroom. Almost everything was done by distant correspondence from what I understand.
From here, http://www.shields-research.org/Novak/james.htm :
“Does James White have a genuine doctorate? Here is what we know. The degree is granted by an unaccredited correspondence school. There are no set course syllabi; students write their own syllabi. CES has no library, student services or bookstore. The school has no curriculum committees and no course review procedures. There appears to have been no committee and no thesis or dissertation defense; the only signature in James White’s Masters Thesis is that of CES president, Rick Walston. White’s “contract” was also with Rick Walston. Does James White have a genuine doctorate? What do you think?”
You can place “Dr.” James White up on a pedestal all you want, but personally I think the man is a scullywag and a conman.

That is what makes this “article” by Mosser and Owens absurd from the beginning.
Ok, so there is “Mormon Scholarship”, and it “advances” if that is possible, at an ever quickening pace. What is the end result? Do they think that if they research the archaeological/anthropological aspects long enough the ruins of the Nephites will suddenly appear, that if BYU geneticist work long enough Hebrew DNA will suddenly show up in the Native American population?
That is like saying upon the completion of my dissertation on symbolism and imagery in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien I should expect to have a pint with Frodo or have Gandalf show up to do a magic show for my kids birthday...
To: urroner
Second, Mormon scholars and apologists (not all apologists are scholars) have, with varying degrees of success, answered most of the usual evangelical criticisms."Little Joey; do YOU know the answer to the math problem, 2+2?"
"Yes Teacher; it is 5."

Just because somebody says that a paper is obsolete doesnt make it so.Just because JS claimed that PRESBYTERIANism was UNTRUE, doesn't make it so.

They may as well be preaching from Harry Potter or the Lord of the Rings, they would have the same amount of truth as the BOM. Well; to be fair, there is SOME Truth in it: the parts of the BIBLE that were plagerized; but it's so mixed up to be almost unuseable.
