BARTOW, Florida — Authorities say a 55-year-old woman died alone in a bedroom of her central Florida home after locking herself in the room for several weeks for a lengthy religious fast. Evelyn Boyd told her husband, a preacher at a Pentecostal church in the city of Bartow, not to disturb her when she locked herself in the room Feb. 7 to fast and pray with only water to drink. Family members forced open the door March 5 and found her dead. [SNIP] The woman's husband, John Boyd, told the paper he didn't check on his wife because she felt she was doing what God called her to do and he wanted to respect her privacy

>Privacy or neglect?

Well, generally speaking a 55 year old doesn’t “need to be taken care of.”

The headline (”weeklong”) doesn’t match what the article says (Feb. 7 to March 5). “Monthlong” is more like it.

So a family member locks herself in a room for a month and you don’t bother to check up on her? Ya sure...

You were saying ...

Well, generally speaking a 55 year old doesn’t “need to be taken care of.”

I don't know about that... I've found that the older they get the more taking care of they need... :-)

Fasting for this length of time is stupidity.

Very sad. I feel badly for this woman. Very odd that her husband didn't intervene. Don't know much about pentecostal; don't want to know.

Prayers for she and her family.

It depends on how you fast. If you use the Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton or Cindy Sheehan fast you can fast indefinitely.

I’ve had a couple of friends—pastor types—who fast 40 days every year, water only.

One may put a little lemon in the water.

LOL.

Juice/liquid fasts is about as strict as I’ve been able to manage.

Something is rotten and it ain’t in Denmark. I am not believing this lame excuse. Wouldn’t a person notice that she wasn’t moving around or coming out to use the bathroom?

How come he didn’t notice the smell? There is bound to have been an odor after a short period.

I read that after you fast for about 3 days, you no longer feel hungry. Never tried it-for longer than about 9 hours (sleep for 7 hours, get up drink coffee for 2 hrs. then break the fast).LOL

Bartow is the phosphate capital of the southeast.
Not known as a bastion of education.

Well..., I hope you realize that the stupid part was letting someone die... that’s what I call stupid. Although I don’t do fasts, I realize some people do, but they should be monitored and also taken care of, if it’s needed. To let someone just die (locked away in a room) is just plain stupid.

I’m inclined to agree.

Though I don’t know the woman, her personality, his personality nor the nature of their relationship.

Sounded strange, so I searched for a bigger article. I found one, Polk woman who died alone while fasting was following God's call:
Last year, she fasted four times — once for 40 days. Her husband was concerned about her then but saw she made it through okay, so he wasn't as worried this time.
