I beg to differ. But be that as it may, let’s respect each other’s beliefs. Catholic bashing by Protestants (ala Jack Chick) or Protestant bashing by Catholics doesn’t do the cause of Christian reunification and reconcilation any good.

Good advice.

Did you also take Iscool to task on this thread for their boorish behavior?

Yep. See post 98. The Catholic Church is a Christian Church and thus one can’t convert unless one has accepted Jesus as Savior and Messiah, which is key to Christianity.

Luther should have thought of that before he burnt dissenters at the stake.

Did he really? Or was it John Calvin? Also, the Catholic Church wasn’t completely innocent, either. Look at the Inquisition. Protestant (or Catholic)bashing won’t do the cause of Christian reconcilation any good.

Yes, he really did. No, it wasn’t Calvin, it was Luther. He executed anabaptists for heresy.

“Protestant (or Catholic)bashing won’t do the cause of Christian reconcilation any good.”

Glass houses. I didn’t start this. This is a thread about a Catholic convert. It would be nice if the Protestants could show some class here, and be gracious.

the Bible is the only infallible and inerrant authority for Christian faith

Nonsense. The Christian Bible didn't even exist prior to about A.D. 360. All they had before that period was the Jewish Torah and the oral teaching passed down from the Lord to the Apostles and from them to the Pope and bishops in union with him.

"There was no canon of scripture in the early Church; there was no Bible. The Bible is the book of the Church; she is not the Church of the Bible. It was the Church -- her leadership, faithful people -- guided by the authority of the Spirit of Truth which discovered the books inspired by God in their writing. The Church did not create the canon; she discerned the canon. Fixed canons of the Old and New Testaments, hence the Bible, were not known much before the end of the 2nd and early 3rd century"1.

>it was Luther. He executed anabaptists for heresy.

True, but then again, if i’m not mistaken, pretty much *everyone* executed anabaptists for heresy. The more radical anabaptists took up arms against the earthly authorities, both Lutheran AND Catholic if I’m not mistaken.

>It would be nice if the Protestants could show some class here, and be gracious.

I’m a Protestant, and I’m certainly willing to be gracious. As I stated, the Catholic Church is indeed a Christian one, and in order to convert, one must believe in Jesus as Savior and Messiah, a important belief of Christianity in general.

>All they had before that period was the Jewish Torah and the oral teaching passed down from the Lord to the Apostles and from them to the Pope and bishops in union with him.

WHich was basically the basis for the Bible, if I’m not mistaken.

>The Church did not create the canon; she discerned the canon.

Yes, but some may feel that the canon is sufficient for their spiritual needs. I’m LCMS, though I respect my Catholic spiritual cousins. All I want is to be respected in turn.

Calvin didn’t burn anyone at the stake. He had no civil authority at all in Geneva.
