Homemade Blowtorches

A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. Proverbs 12:16 (NIV)

Recommended Reading Proverbs 15:1-7

A newspaper reported recently that a man got into a tiff with his father in Tampa and tried to set him on fire with a makeshift blowtorch using a can of bug spray and a lighter. The attempt failed, and the son was arrested; but the story reminds us there's no end to ways people get upset at others. We're surrounded by angry arguments, hurt feelings, bitter feuds, broken relationships, and offended pride.

But the Bible counsels maturity. Reading through Proverbs reminds us that a wise person isn't easily angered, doesn't spread gossip, and refrains from harsh words. Someone said that a mature Christian has the heart of a child, the mind of a scholar, and the hide of a rhinoceros.

Jesus Christ has borne all our sins; He has put up with us and forgiven our offenses by His own blood. If He's patient with us, we should bear patiently with others. There's no need to go around all fired up, blasting others with homemade blowtorches. A fool displays annoyance at once, but a prudent person overlooks an insult.

May the Lord give us this holy deafness.... Amy Carmichael

Good advice. However, it would seem that this implies a corollary that there are times when anger is appropriate and necessary. It would be just as wise to be angry when anger is merited.

I agree......there are times God calls us to “share” his anger just as we do the other emotions He designed us with.
