ROME – Groups that have long demanded that women be ordained Roman Catholic priests took advantage of the Vatican's crisis over clerical sex abuse to press their cause Tuesday, demanding the Vatican open discussions on letting women join the priesthood.
Representatives of a half-dozen Catholic reform groups marched on St. Peter's Square on the eve of a three-day rally marking the end of the church's yearlong celebration of the priest. Vatican officials have said the during the rally Pope Benedict XVI may apologize for the decades of rapes and molestation that children suffered at the hands of priests.
The umbrella group Women's Ordination Conference said the Vatican shouldn't be celebrating the priesthood while "turning a blind eye when men in its ranks destroy the lives of children and families."
"While the hierarchy spends their time covering up scandals and throwing major celebrations for themselves, Catholic women are working for justice and making a positive difference in the world," said Erin Saiz Hanna, the Women's Ordination Conference executive director.
She spoke at a news conference before a dozen members of the reform groups marched to the Vatican in a bid to hand out flyers to tourists, priests and other passers-by. Police stopped them when they reached the square and asked them to leave, which they did.

Representative of the Women's Ordination Conference Mary Ann Schoettly from Newton, N.J, US, talks to the media during a press conference she held in Rome
Drama queens. It’s all about them.
Who would think that Ms. Jane Hathaway was still alive.
Do you think the women would want to molest little girls.
Let's look at the example of one such woman, Sr. Carol Keehan, who is pro-abortion and supports Obamacare. Abortion is a 'legalized' assault on women.
As for you insinuation regarding Catholic priests, no Catholic will ever defend the indefensible. Most of the sex abuse that took place dates back to the 50's and earlier, long before JPII. I would ask you, however, what is being done in non-Catholic communities to stop predatory sex abuse of children? This is not limited to the Catholic Church.
I was about to say something but you know, I’ll be nice...
It's all about them ... they seek power, not service.
I had to look up Hathaway to remind myself who she was....she was the spinster, stiff-necked bird-watcher on The Beverly Hillbillies. You nailed the resemblance perfectly. BTW, the actress who portrayed Hathaway, the late Nancy Kulp, was a lesbian.
Leni
Then kudos for her amazing acting skills. Jane was extremely hot for Jethro Bodine.
When the Catholic Church starts making women priests, or marrying homosexuals or backs down from their anti-aboortion stance they have seen the last of me.
The pedophiles they hid and their handling of homosexual priest’s, and Jenkins at Notre Dame , these things already have me hanging on by my teeth.
These people are trying to create a split in the Catholic Church ,They should quit and join another Church if they are so dissatisfied, if they succeed in creating a split,I will join whatever section goes along with keeping the Church the way it is, or the way it should be, according to my conscience.
Vatican to women’s groups!
NO!
Next question?
Why would anyone stay in a demomination that they didn't believe was right?
No game plan here, freind, just a reality check. The Catholic Church in the US, has implemented a plan to prevent this from ever occuring again. It includes fingerprinting and background checks on ALL volunteers who come in contact with children. We have addressed the problem. What has your church done?
And, according to Wikipedia, Kulp ran for the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat from Pennsylvania but was unsuccessful.
Correct on both counts. The best thing to come out of Nancy Kulp's ill-fated run against Bud Shuster was Buddy Ebsen's pro-Shuster radio ads where, in his trademark Jed Clampett voice, he declared: "Nancy Kulp is REEEEEEEEEL Lib'ral."
She always struck me as resembling Bill Buckley in drag.
ROTFL!! She DOES look like Miss Hathaway!
So sadly true. They want the power to change the Church's teachings on the things with which THEY disagree, like abortion, homosexuality and same sex 'marriage'. All the usual liberal notions for which they've been fighting for years.
My cousin's wife had considered becoming a Catholic, but this was the issue that made her pause. I told her to look hard at those who were pushing for women's ordination, and more importantly for the REASONS behind their push.
