NUNCIO

An official prelate representing the Pope at the capital of a foreign government. He watches over the welfare of the Church in that country and handles the affairs between the Apostolic See and the civil government of the country to which he has been assigned. In Catholic countries the nuncio is the dean of the diplomatic corps. (Etym. Latin nuntius, messenger, envoy.)
