Among Catholics, Obama job approval rating decreases to 50 percent

A new survey examining religious believers’ approval ratings of President Obama shows that about 50 percent of Catholics approve of his presidency, down from 67 percent in his first six months in office. Catholics make up about 22 percent of the U.S. population.

The Gallup Poll survey found the president’s approval rating among non-Catholic Christians, who make up 55 percent of the U.S. population, had fallen from 58 percent to 43 percent. His already low approval among Mormon respondents, who represent about two percent of U.S. adults, fell from 43 percent to 26 percent

About 78 percent of Muslim respondents approved of the Obama presidency, down eight percentage points from when the question was first asked. Second to Muslims were atheists, agnostics, and members of other non-Christian religions, who comprise about 13 percent of the U.S. population. While about 75 percent of these respondents approved of President Obama at the start of his term, their approval declined to about 64 percent.

Jews were the religious group third likeliest to approve of President Obama, giving him 61 percent approval. This too is a decline: in January-June 2009, their approval rating of the president was 77 percent.

Overall, 48 percent of Americans approve of President Obama’s job, down from 63 percent in the first months of his presidency. Gallup claims that its survey of over 276,000 adults claims an overall margin of error of plus or minus one percent.

Fifty percent? ...On the one hand I think the way to gain Catholic Hispanics as conservative voters is by appealing to their values, not kowtowing to the radical leftists on immigration, but studies like these keep me grounded in the reality that people are soft in the head, and they vote accordingly. It’s going to take something like a total Obamao failure, economic and social collapse, to shake the mush out of ignorant heads.

That graph does not show church attendance and voting, it only shows it for Whites, not Catholics in general.

Sad as it is, I think Obama was elected out of a need to “stick it to whitey.” I believe this is the reason the Catholic numbers are so high: the Catholic Asian community and Hispanics fell prey to this need. Now add in all the kooky liberal white Catholics and you’ve got quite a group.

How would you account for the Catholic vote in 2000?

Why do any Catholics approve...Obama thinks killing babies in the womb and in a petri dish for any reason is a good thing.

Church attendance was a "life style" at one time. It has evolved and people no longer use it for "quiet time", as an obligation or as a social life. At one time, church was the "social life" for many. Times change

I think these last two generations are more likely to pray privately.

Your anti=Catholic bias is showing -- LOL! You are picking on the Catholics instead of the other higher voting groups.

Besidies that -- Catholics and Mormons take the prize for dropping Obortion O the most points with the Jewish population coming in second in most points dropped. See my comparison below. Original percentage points are in blue bolded, current percentage points are in black bolded. Points down is in red!

THE DIMOCRATS TRUE-BLUE IS FADING, ISN'T IT?

This is the best analysis of the voting and the current trends that I have seen. Obortion O is in big trouble!

This is disheartening to be that this has turned into a Catholic bashing thread when the numbers spoken of clearly show the Muslims, non- religious and Jewish voters far surpassed the Catholic percentages — both at the beginning of this _resident’s term and currently.

See my total points dropped summary.

**well there are catholics in congress who support pro abortion agenda so i guess the poll is about right**

No, those supposed Catholics in Congress have excommunicated themselves by supporting abortion. It doesn’t need to be done formally by a Bishop — and yes, the Pope has spoken these words.

But basically the people excommunicate themselves. That’s why you had some priests saying after the election of Obama, that if Catholics voted for Obama they needed to go to Confession because they had sinned in electing a pro-abortion _resident.

**I think that you will see the opposite, as the Catholic church loses it’s older whites, it will become even more liberal.**

Are you kidding? The young people coming into the Catholic Church are more conservative. ALL the new priests know how to say the Mass in Latin — the old way. The pendulum is swinging back to the right.

And, yes, we do thank God for this change within the Church.

One never leaves the Catholic Church — once they are a baptized Catholic — they are always a baptized Catholic — unless they sit in front of a panel of priest and have filled out tons of paperwork.

Why are you picking on only the Catholic vote? How about the Muslim vote? the atheist and agnostic vote, the Jewish vote?? — they out voted the Catholics in percentage points far and beyond.

Or are you just relishing the Catholic-bashing?

There's a pattern here folks! Do you see it?

Obama won the overall religious vote, 52 percent to 46 percent, reversing President George W. Bush’s 51 percent to 48 percent “values voter” victory over Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry in 2004. Obama also won the Catholic vote, persuaded young evangelical voters to choose him and began to squeeze shut the so-called “God gap” yawning between religious Democrats and Republicans during the Bush era.

How will the roughly 9.1 million evangelical Christians who voted for Obama vote in the next election? Will Obama's actions compel the 31.2 million evangelicals who didn't vote in the 2008 election to vote next time?

Obama Receives 77% of Jewish Vote-- More Than Kerry
White US Catholics move toward GOP, Hispanic Catholics toward Democrats
Among Catholics, Obama job approval rating decreases to 50 percent

Are you kidding? The young people coming into the Catholic Church are more conservative.

That is a very rah-rah, thing to say, but it seems to contradict the facts.

"Washington DC, Oct 8, 2008 (CNA).- A new poll of Americans ages 18-34 has surveyed the faith, politics, and issue positions of young adults before the 2008 election. The poll claims about 60 percent of younger self-identified Catholics say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 44 percent reportedly support same-sex marriage, a number which rises to 64 percent when religious liberty protections are emphasized."
"Catholics aged 35 and older are split between McCain and Obama 46 percent to 44 percent, but Obama leads McCain among younger Catholics 55 to 40 percent."

You are talking about CINO kids from CINO parents.

My original statement stands as witnessed by me. Sorry you don’t believe me.

Well, their only choices were two white guys, so they then voted for the more conservative of the two.

I’d also say pretty much everyone could tell Gore was the worst kind of arrogant, sanctimonious white guy.

Not among the churchgoing demographic.

Flip it around and you’ve hit the nail square on the head. Older, boomer liberals are far more likely to vote Obama and go to church, whereas the kids who do attend are very unlikely to do so.

Catholics voted for Gore in 2000, he was not the most conservative of the two.
